Friday Show N Tell!

Posted in My Fathers World

We made an animal cell.  The outer membrane is a freezer bag, the inside is jello with a ball in it for the nucleus and beans are the organelles, it looks kinda gross but it is just jello, my son had a blast making it.

WE are loving the Usborne internet linked First Encyclopedia of Science that My Fathers World Adventures includes.  This book is so colorful and really brings the photographs out of the page.

First Encyclopedia of Science (First Encyclopedias)

In history we learned about Eli Whitney, who invented the Cotton Gin.  Wow, how this made things easier-you no longer had to hand pick the seeds out of the cotton which took forever and made cotton very expensive, too expensive for most to buy.  The job was mostly given to slaves and a very time consuming job, if you picked the seeds out wrong you would tear the cotton, all the seeds had to be hand picked out slowly usually in very hot temperatures. The cotton gin made the cotton crop explode.  We made seeds in cotton and hand picked them trying not to tear the cotton, what a challenge.

We have had lots of fun this week!  Next week I will be showing some of the great things we are doing with my fathers world K, I have several neat things to show with that.  We are truly loving this curriculum!

Fun, fun, fun activities! The cotton gin was invented in the area where our land is. We've never had enough time when we've been in the area though to see if there's anything "educational" that we can visit to learn more.

That is an incredible idea! Wish I'd thought of it years ago. Science was my "major" and we dissected and did the microscope and telescope route and all kinds of hands on. The "cell" idea is wonderful!

I love your animal cell! It's true that the cotton gin saved a lot of back breaking efforts from slaves and made clothes more affordable.

I love the color of the jello cell. Cool picture. If you ever get near a cotton field, be sure and have them get out and look. The plants are so cool. Picking it by hand tore their hands up because of the rough parts of the boll. My dad and his siblings all picked it by hand as kids, with these huge bags trailing behind them. It wasn't fun. Fun idea to hide seeds in it!
