Made Here Baby!

I recently received a book called 'Made Here Baby" .  This book is packed full of great information on companies that sell American products for children.  The topics include everything from infant items to toys, furniture and much more.  This book includes almost everything you would buy for a child.   We have come to a point in this country where we can't trust everything that is sold out there for our kids.  We have had so many recalls and dangerous things out there being sold, it truly can be scary!  This book wants to tell you about companies that are known to be safe and well-made.  The book also contains companies that are family run, companies that are owned by women and moms and companies that care about the enviroment!

I loved looking through this book.  There were so many companies out there that I didn't know about.  They include websites, addresses, and phone numbers.  Everything is in categories so it is easy to find who sells clothes, toys, and all the other topics it covers.  I enjoyed the beginning of each chapter that included personal stories and factual information on safety and more.  This is one of those books that every parent should have on their bookshelf so they can always have the best stores available to them to buy for their kids.

After all the recalls of Chinese-imported toys containing dangerous chemicals, parents want to know where to get products they know will be safe because they have American manufacturing standards. Plus, in the current recession more and more people are looking to support their local businesses.

Author, product developer, and proud uncle and godfather Bruce Wolk tracked down over 400 U.S. companies that produce amazing children’s products from infant moccasins from Minnesota to cribs handmade in Memphis, sustainably-built wooden sleds from Colorado to Cotton Monster’s unique plush animals in Seattle. In addition to basic company information and interesting facts, he includes notes on eco-friendly companies, family businesses, and ones that make products for children with special needs, so every parent is sure to find a product that meets their home’s needs.

Thanks to the FRN and Made Here Baby for this opportunity!

Blog Tour!

I have two blog tours to share with you!  I'm getting them up late but I did want to share about the books because they are really great ones to let me readers know about.  The first one is Learning to Live Financially Free by Marybeth and Curt Whalen and the second one I will share in my next entry.  Most of us homeschoolers have heard of Marybeth.  She is well known as a speaker and writer and is a member of the Proverbs 31 ministries.

I have read almost the whole book and am really enjoying it.   This is a book written by two people that have really been there in the trenches with their money issues and their marriage.  They both share what worked for them and how they changed their lives one day at a time and most of all started to give GOD their finances for the first time in their lives.  There is a lot of practical things in this book as well, they walk through specific things they did to turn their situation around.  At the end of this post you will see tips on money saving in tough times and be able to take a quiz to see if you and your husband are financially focused.

About the Book:

(North Carolina) - The fear and reality of tough economic times, foreclosures, bailouts, bankruptcies and falling stocks strike fear in the hearts of many Americans today. With investors, newscasters and bankers giving advice, who can you trust? Marybeth and Curt Whalen share their financial successes and failures in their new book, Learning to Live Financially Free: Hard-Earned Wisdom for Saving Your Marriage & Your Money. If a family parenting six children can get out of debt and live financially free, anyone can. The Whalens readily admit they made their share of mistakes the first ten years of marriage. Becoming more disciplined and intentional in spending and saving helped them learn valuable lessons for better financial stewardship--lessons you'll want to learn too.

Learning to Live Financially Free not only focuses on building a stronger financial understanding in the home, but also encourages couples to communicate, thus building better, stronger marriages. The Whalens clearly comprehend the need for careful money management and commitment in marriage. Money-strapped families will find peace of mind as they begin the process of becoming financially responsible and debt-free.

Paperback: 176 pages

Publisher: Kregel Publications

Release Date: March 2009

ISBN-10: 0825441889

ISBN-13: 978-0825441882

Marybeth and Curt Whalen know what it's like to juggle marriage, kids and money. Their new book will encourage readers to manage their money and marriage more effectively.

Top Ten Tips For Saving Money In Tough Times

1. Make a budget (and stick to it). A budget overwhelms many people but it is really nothing more than devising a plan for every dollar you bring in. Having a budget helps you spend smarter and think more. It also helps to improve your buying power. The best way to make a budget is to start by sitting down with your spouse and deciding how much you spend on regular categories like groceries, gas, medical, etc. each month. Talk through these things and get them down on paper. Then spend accordingly. An article that goes into step by step detail about making a budget can be found at:

http://www.christianpf.com/how-to-make-a-budget/

2. Stop using credit cards. Studies show that people who use credit cards buy more and think less about their purchases. By learning to spend cash and limiting your purchases, you make your money work for you rather than against you. Credit card companies are getting craftier as the economy struggles. 25% of all credit card users in this country will have their rates raised this year, or their monthly payment raised. When you are in debt, you are at the mercy of the company you owe. Don’t let yourself get bogged down by credit card debt.

3. Cook at home. It sounds so basic and yet how many of us resort to eating out because we just can’t deal with dinner? By taking a few moments once a week to devise a menu plan, shopping for the needed ingredients for that menu plan, and cooking the meals in your home, you can save lots of money and have more time to gather as a family and enjoy a slow evening at home. Eating at home not only saves money, it saves valuable family time.

4. Buy clothes at thrift or consignment stores. This is especially true with children’s clothes. When you are in a department store, always shop the clearance racks and avoid the other racks so you aren’t tempted. It’s also an income generator if you consign your own clothing. You can then take the money you earn on consignment and buy clothes for a new season without being out of pocket any money!

5. If you must eat out, only go to places you have coupons for. Keep a small photo album and arrange restaurant coupons so they are easy to find as you are heading out the door. It’s also a great idea to look for “kids eat free” nights and frequent those. Other ways to save on eating out include ordering water (big savings on this), share meals, order a kids’ portion if the restaurant allows it, and go out for lunch instead of dinner. For people who work, it’s always a good idea to pack your lunch regularly instead of running out to eat. A jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread will go a long way.

6. Learn to play the coupon game. Many people devote themselves to clipping and organizing coupons—and reap great savings from doing so. There are many frugal websites and blogs that detail exactly how to save a lot of money with coupons. A great one to start with is http://www.couponmom.com/. And here is a great tutorial video you can watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcAUZvGS6L8.

7. If you have children, limit the number of activities they do to one per child, per year. If you are struggling to pay for even one activity, consider asking for the activity as a gift from grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends, etc. Instead of another toy that will end up broken or lost, your child can receive a gift that truly keeps on giving as well as one that invests in their future.

8. Think about the things you regularly spend money on like gas or utilities and research ways to save money on those things. For instance, http://www.gasbuddy.com/ tells you where to buy the cheapest gas according to your area code. Bundling services with your cable provider can save money each month. Calling your energy company to find out when their off-peak hours are and doing your laundry or dishes during those times can save on your monthly bill as well.

9. Don’t shop as a recreational activity. If you can’t see it, you won’t feel a need to have it. Use time you used to spend shopping to go for a walk, visit a park, exercise, read a book, or spend time researching money-saving sites on the internet! If you have a friend you used to enjoy shopping with, sit down and list out other alternatives for your time together.

10. Look for ways to generate additional income. Whether it be an additional part-time job or a way to make money from home using a skill or talent you possess, get creative, get motivated, and get excited about the potential you have to generate income that you didn’t have before. Every little bit helps, so put on your thinking cap and don’t be shy about stepping out and trying something!

Kinesys Sunscreen Giveaway!

spf 30 UVA and UVB skin care sunscreen for kids ultimate sun block protection

I received some bottles of sunscreen from Kinesys.

This is information from the website:

Photo-stable Broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with Parsol® 1789
Topical antioxidant Tocopheryl Acetate(Vitamin E) to scavenge free radicals
Oil-free / Alcohol-free / PABA-free / Preservative-free
Very Water-resistant / Sweat-resistant
Hypoallergenic / Non-comedogenic
Fragrance-free
This KINeSYS product has a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating of 30, meaning that it extends the body's natural UV resistance by 30 times. If applied as directed, this product will effectively absorb both UVA and UVB rays. This gentle non-irritating formula is ideal for children, sprays on easily and dries fast for little athletes on the go and comes in a bright fun package kids enjoy.

I really like this sunscreen, I loved the fact that when you spray it, it comes out so easy and goes on great.  It dries so quickly.   I hate sunburn, really hate it.  I was never one of those girls who had to have a tan bad enough to fry myself, NEVER worth it.  I burn very easy and I love a good sunsreen with spf of 30.  I don't use anything with less.  More important I want protection for my kids, not only because burns hurt so much but because I know the risk of cancer is just too great.  This sunscreen did great, I sprayed it on, it dried quick and it lasted the whole time we were out! This sunscreen is so easy to spray, you don't have to rub it on and it comes in cool fun bottles for kids  We haven't had the chance to use it too much yet because our weather has been cool and wet for the most part but I'm really looking forward to using it a lot this summer.

As well as being a kid's favorite KINeSYS sunscreens have won awards from parenting groups such as Mom's Best, iParenting and the PTPA, "because parents know best".   This sunscreen is so easy to spray, you don't have to rub it on and it comes in cool fun bottles for kids.

The fun part is I get to give some away!  Yeah!  This will be for 4oz Kids Sunscreen & 4oz Kids Moisturizer.   Leave me a comment telling me what activity you use sunscreen for the most!

Open to US Residents!  Contest ends Saturday May 23rd at midnight!

If you post an entry on your blog or tweet about it I will give you another entry.

Or if you follow me on twitter here.

Thanks to FRN and Kinesys for this opportunity!

All About Spelling!

spellingbookL3.JPG

If your looking for a great spelling curriculum All About Spelling is one to look into for sure.  I received a whole program for All About Spelling.  I think the most unique thing about it is there is so much more to it then spelling!  SO much more....    There is phonics, spelling, literature and grammar rules-it truly covers so many areas of language arts.  It does take some time to set up but well worth it if the spelling program you currently use has not worked for you!  Many of the crew members have raved about it, you can check their reviews out here.

All about spelling consists of letter tiles,  flash cards, and an optional CD-ROM as well. The teachers manual is put together very well.  It helps you in great detail to teach the concepts they give you and is laid out wonderfully.   The tiles are very important with this program and a must have.  The program does take time and effort on you and your children but if you have a child that is struggling with reading, spelling,  or needs a program that really helps based on their learning style, this could very well be your answer.  it touches on all the learning styles, so if one aspect doesn't work you can bet another would.

All About Spelling is available for purchase with level 5 being published in 2009. Included in each level is one teacher's manual and one student materials packet for $29.95. The letter tiles are important to this curriculum, and are 9.95 and are used for all levels.

Thanks to ALL ABOUT SPELLING,  and  THE HOMESCHOOL CREW for this opportunity!

Write Shop!

It is not easy getting our children to want to write, it can be like pulling teeth. We ask the kids to tell us about a particular subject and they just can't seem to think of one thing, have you ever been there?

Writeshop makes it fun.  It consists of writing games that get your children thinking of ideas and fun things to write about, the best part is the kids LOVE it!  Now how many writing exercises can you say that about?  The storybuilders come with 192 storybuilder cards that give your child many ideas.  You can get quite silly with them and of course that makes it so much fun!   There are 48 cards for you to create your own.  These all come in ebook form so you can print what you need when you need it.

We received the World of Sports and The World of Animals-the cards we have done have been so much fun, we are hoping to finish these and get more that we don't already have.  They even have a mini one about Christmas that would be wonderful to do around Christmas time!  I'm going to be implementing the workbox system for the 2009 school year and I look forward to adding many writing cards from writeshop.  If writing usually causes tears and frustration in your home, you have to try these!

Thanks to the Homeschoolcrew and Writeshop for this opportunity.

Dirty Bow Wow Giveaway!

I recently received a copy of the new book Dirty Bow Wow:  A Tribute to Dogs and the Objects of their Affections.  It is ADORABLE.  There are so many beautiful photos of dogs and their playthings in this book.  The pictures are colorful and vibrant and each one tells a small story about the dogs favorite toy, stories of how some of the dogs have endured hard times in their past and just heartwarming stories that tug at your heart strings.  This book would be loved by all dog lovers and makes a wonderful story book for the kids.  Each one of my children ages 10, 6, and 5 have loved this book.  They will look at it over and over trying to pick the cutest dog-they change their minds everytime they look at it.  They are all so cute!

My dog has his own toy box and it is so funny that no matter how far back behind the furniture it is, he always makes his 90lb body over to it to get out his favorite.  I think my dogs favorite is his ropes.  One Christmas we even bought him a Christmas Color One, Red and Green.  He LOVED it.  I love that commercial where the owner and the dog are at PetSmart and are buying a new toy named Bobo and he is carrying it in his mouth.  That is so great!  Our pets truly love their toys as much as our kids do.

For the month of May there is going to be a great cause going on.  Dogs show us so much unconditional love!  The Bow Wow toy drive is a wonderful way to give back to the dogs!  Shelter dogs spend days locked in a confined space, and toys can help brighten a lonely dog’s day and teach them socialization skills that make them more adoptable.

Your help is needed! The Dirty Bow Wow Dog Toy Drive starts May 2009 at bookstores across the country. It’s your chance to help shelter dogs find the toy of their dreams, and hopefully a permanent, loving home. Below is a list of retailers who are collecting dog toy donations or hosting events. Drop off a new dog toy at the location nearest you, and aid a dog in need today!  Click HERE for more details.

Click here for a list of participating bookstores.-What a wonderful cause to donate a toy to a dog in the shelter to play with.  If you have been looking for a great family thing to do together to teach your children love and kindess to others this would be great fun to do together and your children would LOVE it!

Now for the giveaway!  Dirty Bow Wow is giving one of their books away to one of my lucky readers.  Just leave a comment telling me your favorite dogs toy.  Past or Present Dog.  If you don't have this experience to tell me just leave a comment telling me what you love about dogs the most!

Open to US Residents!  Contest ends Monday May 11th at midnight!

If you post an entry on your blog or tweet about it I will give you another entry.

Or if you follow me on twitter here.

Or if you add the toy drive button to your sidebar.  You can find this HERE

Always!

Okay, for any men that read my blog you may want to skip this entry.  I'm reviewing Always Infinity.  Since mostly moms and women read my blog I think I'm safe, but dealing with our monthly visitor is life, is it not?  And of course we want good protection.  The last thing we want is to have an embarrasing situation while we are out or soiling our beds or furniture and we have ALL been there!  I have always loved Always-I love the way they are made, the way they absorb and how comfortable they are.  Well I have to say I truly like the new infinity even more.

Incredibly Soft Cover Sheet — It's designed to work with the pad's Infinicel core to help you feel dry.
Microdots™ for Fast Absorption — At the center of each pad you'll find Microdots™ engineered to help quickly guide fluid deep inside and away from you.
Revolutionary Wing Design for Secure Protection — Super flexible wings hug the curvature of your panty and provide optimal coverage at your panty's sides.
Form-Fitting Channels for Great Leakage Protection — Our form-fitting channels move with your body for an intimate three-dimensional body fit and great leakage protection.
Designed to be Wider in the Back — Providing increased coverage where you need it most

It was very comfortable and I LOVE the wider back.  That is where I have the biggest problem and this pad really helped in that area, especially when I sleep!  It has a wonderful protective cover sheet and microdots to keep you fluid away from you.  This made a huge difference for me.  The pad curved to with my body and didn't bunch up and make me miserable while wearing them.  I can't recommend them enough, you have to try one.

You can try one for free too by clicking here.

Thanks to the FRN and Always for this opportunity!

Apologia!

Most homeschoolers are familar with the word Apologia!  For many though they think of Apologia just for jr. high/high school, if that has been you, you have to check out the website!  We received a book from them called "Exploring Creation with Zoology 1  Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day"  This is in a series for elementary students called the Young Explorer Series and is written by Jeannie K Fulbright.  It is so hard to find a great science program that is based on creation but this one does.  It is totally from a biblical worldview!  We love birds in this house, we love to feed them and watch them.  What a beautiful creature that God provides for.  The book of Matthew even reminds us that God takes care of the birds of the air and day 5 of creation is when they appeared on earth.  This book has so much information, you will know so much about birds by the end of it.  You can arrange the subjects however you like so if you want to cover certain topics at certain times of the year, you just move it around so you can do that.  There are many science experiements, nature notebook activities, and other projects that are so hands on such as putting out different bird food and seeing which your birds like best!  You will also learn about bats and insects and other flying creatures as well!

I can say enough great things about Apologia, if you have been unhappy with what your science books teach or how much it lacks you have to try this one!

I love what the back of the book says

A creationist view is stressed throughout.  Time and time again, God is glorified as the Master Creator of all that the students are studying.

Thanks to the homeschoolcrew and Apologia for this opportunity!

LemonHeadkidz

Lemonheadkidz makes handmade non slip headbands and hair clips. They fit infants to moms because they are fully adjustable and you also have an option of tying your hair back at the same time. Just use the ends of the headbands and tie your hair back with them. The hair clips are non slip and especially great on super fine hair.

We really LOVED this clip and headband.  The clip my daughter wore has a flower, the picture below is her wearing it!   She loved showing it off.  She has thin hair so most hair clips fall out, I usually have to re do her's many times during the day but this one I did not.  It stays in place great and looks really cute.  These are called clipeezs and come in many designs and colors.

The headband was WONDERFUL,  It is made of cloth so it is soft and was so easy to use.  You just pull back your bangs and it helps comb them back with a built in comb backing and then you pull it in the back for a tight or loose fit, whatever you prefer.  You can wear it several different ways.  I wore it out and have received many compliments on it.  Many of the headbands I wear give me horrible headaches, this one is comfortable and did not hurt my head at all!  I would love to get more with different colors and widths.

If you are looking for nice things for you and or the girls in your life you truly have to check this company out, you won't be disappointed!

Thanks to FRN and LemonHeadkidzs for this opportunity

From the sponsor:
There are non slip clips out there in the market but ours are different. They are 100 percent glueless. Not only do they stay in your hair, but the little pieces like flowers, decorations and the ribbon on the clip won't come off. I started making these hair clips after my two year old destroyed every single hair clip I ever made her, she loved flicking off the center shiny piece, pulling off the flowers and ribbon from the clip. The process in which we make our clips is patent pending. It took me two months but I solved every single problem. Our hair clips and headbands are designed to interact with each other and once the hair clip is clipped onto the headband the clips won't slip or slide back and fourth.

Born 2 Impress

Born 2 Impress is committed to hand-crafting unique designs with the highest quality materials and the utmost care, for any occasion, in a timely manner so that anyone can make their little one feel and look like a princess.

Borntoimpress

I received two hair accesorries from Born 2 Impress for my five year old.  I think it's great to see or hear of moms who have used their talent to start their own business.  This company was started from a mom who started making cute bows after finding out she was pregnant with her daughter.  She was so good at it that her family encouraged her to sell them and Born2Impress was born.  Her website is just beautiful and she has so much to choose from.  You can buy for an infant through childhood.  The headband we received was very comfortable and well made, they packaged everything well and made the whole experience wonderful.  If your looking for accessories for your little girl, make sure you check this one out!  This is some of things the website shares below.

Vision: To show our appreciation for kids and childhood. To let kids be kids and look like kids. To let parents have a sense of pride and security. To create awareness that every kid was Born 2 Impress.
Safety: We are very concerned about children’s safety. Choking hazards are one of every parent’s main concerns. We hand-sew every appliqué, bead or little detail that can be sewn. Some pieces cannot be sewn and are either heat-sealed or industrial strength fabric adhesive is used

Schleich!

What fun toys!  We received many of these charming animals from Schleich through the TOS HomeschoolCrew.  My children LOVE them, they play with these all the time.  The animals have a real look to them and are made very well!

The toys are made of high-quality vinyl plastic and hand painted using non-toxic paint.  The motto they use on their website is "Educational aspects play a more important part than possible sales potential."  You don't find many toy companies with that in mind anymore and you don't find quality made toys very often either.  This company sells Knights too, my older son would love to have some of these, they are going on his wish list for Christmas, they would make GREAT stocking stuffers.

You can buy these in many places-hardware stores, department stores and even Amazon.  They are priced very affordable.  From $1.50-$5.00.

Thanks to the Homeschoolcrew and Schleich for this opportunity!

Five in a Row and Beyond!

Most homeschoolers have heard of Five in a Row.  Of course many don't know quite what they are about.  Hopefully after this review you will get some kind of idea!  Five in a Row is a literature based curriculum that bases your studies around great books!  They have Before Five in a Row for preschoolers, Five in a Row for your K/1st graders and even Beyond Five in a Row for your older children!  We received a copy of Beyond five in a row!  My oldest son and I had just started listening to the audio book The Cricket in Times Square and that happened to be one of the books listed so we spent the last several weeks doing the activities from that book.

This curriculum is wonderful for teaching language arts, history/geography, and for creating wonderful times with your children.  It's a true bring your family together type of curriculm-what better way to learn about your world together through great literature?

I love what the website says:

Five in a Row is more than just a set of lesson plans. It's an approach to learning that will forever change how both you, and your children view education, books and teaching. Tested by more than 50,000 families over the past 13 years who have all shared the amazing discovery of Five in a Row with one another by word of mouth. Five in a Row isn't a product to be advertised, sold and marketed, but rather a secret to be shared with your best friend. Explore this website, explore the message boards and ask questions. You'll receive honest, real-life answers from other moms who have successfully gone before you on the journey of homeschooling. Other programs have elaborate philosophies and glowing educational objectives, but Five in a Row has the solid testimony of 50,000 moms who have discovered what works- and what doesn't. Five in a Row produces extraordinary results... for ordinary moms... in the real world.

You get a summary on the story at the beginning and what you will cover.  You study history and geography about the country or state the story takes place so in this case we talked about New York.  We found it on the map and talked about the captial and other things about the state.  Then we learned even more about New York City and what it is like, the transporation they have there and much more!

In Science we studied all about mice because a mouse was one of the main characters and in Language Arts talked about making a fantasy story where animals talk.

As we go along in each chapter we cover what is in the book talking about other places that are mentioned, other science such as insects (covering the main character, the cricket).  This is such a wonderful way to learn about literature, where you break everything in the book down learning about every aspect.  This is a wonderful company with wonderful founders-if your looking for a curriculum to bring your family close and to dive into great literature this is a great one!

Thanks to homeschool crew and five in a row for this opportunity!

Muvee Reveal!

I was honored enough to be able to try out Muvee Reveal for Family Review Network and let me tell you, I LOVE it!  This is a wonderful program that lets you make slideshows of pictures or your home videos.  It is SO easy to use, I had a blast making my video.  You just load your pictures on, pick a song, and a style and voila you have a beautiful slideshow.  It's a point and click setup so it is so easy, even if you feel your not good with computer gadgets.  It was very easy to install, it takes a little while but it walks you through each step as you are installing it.  After getting my pictures in, I decided to change some pictures around-all I did was click it and move it exactly where I wanted.  It even tells you how many more pictures you need to fill the song you picked.  You can share your video on your blog, ipod, computer, really anywhere!  Have you ever took an adorable home movie and wanted to send it to family, this makes it so easy!  This slideshow is our winter.  I have not been able to blog as much lately about my family so I put a slideshow together of all the wonderful things we have done or celebrated this past winter.  Looking forward to all our spring memories to come!

The only thing I didn't like was there are no directions on how to embed. It was really simple to do but the directions were not there so I had to ask for help on that. You have to click on your video after you download it on shwup.com and then then the post button shows up. I will use this for so many fun projects! Thanks so much to FRN and Muvee for the opportunity!

Please push the play button and wait for a minute and the video will start up!

Clorox Disinfecting Wipes!

We have always loved clorox disinfecting wipes!  Now we have another reason to love them, a great new decorative container to put right out on our countertops or sinks or where ever you would  like to put them!

I love this container.  I love how the wipes easily come out.  They don't stick and they are very easy to get out.  They make the canister in eight different designs so you can get a different one for each room you would like to have one in.

Of course the wipes themselves are strong and sturdy and clean everything from doorknobs to countertops.  They have a refreshing smell that I love.  Here is a picture of all eight designs.

cloroxwipes

The website says:

* Better cleaning in a thick, textured wipe
* Low-streak formula for use on shiny surfaces like glass and mirrors
* Effective against common bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus (Staph.), Salmonella enterica, and E. coli*
* Pre-moistened disinfecting wipes that kill 99.9% of germs including viruses that cause colds and flu (Rhinovirus and Influenza A2)*

Thanks so much to FRN and Clorax Wipes for this opportunity!

Earlier this year I did a review for Alphabet Alley!  You can find it here.  This is a wonderful company that sells Christian toys and games.  This summer they are going to release 6 new products and I can't wait to see what they will be.  This company is not only good for your children but for your sunday schools, children church, and VBS.  This is just a delightful company-you have to check it out!
