The rest of my trip pt. 1: My first day at Wallace Island

Posted in trips

So, where did I leave off? Oh, right, we were about to head out on the boat for a campout.

So, we launched the boat at Sidney, it was a bit foggy and kind of rainy but the forcast said it would warm up in the afternoon. About 25min into our trip we saw something spalshing in the water, so we went to  see what it was, Granny thought maybe it was a dolls porpoise. As we got closer we saw that it was a sea lion (not your average sea lion, this thing was HUGE granny thinks it was a northern seal lion as they tend to be bigger than othe sea lions). As we got even closer, we noticed something in its mouth, it was salmon fishing! It would go under and catch a salmon, then come to the top and throw it around before eating it. The sea gulls were everywere just waiting for him to drop some and when he did, they would all swoop down and fight over it. finally when it was done its lunch it swam away, but it was cool!!

For the rest of our journey to the island we didn't see any other wild life except birds. When we got to Wallace Island, Granny decided to make some pasta and meat sauce, so she stayed at the boat while me and Gramps went and looked around a bit. When we got back we ate lunch then headed out to explore the north tip of the island. It took us about 3 hours I think. There were a MILLION little coves to explore, and we explored every one of them. We got back and me and Granny made signs to represent the 'mamalena' at a little cottage up on the island where lots of people made signs and hung them. I made mine out of drift wood and markers, Granny decided to go extreme and carve hers out of sand stone, we didn't have anything sharp on the boat except a screw driver, but that didn't stop Granny! When we were done, we went up to the cottage and found homes for our signs. Gramps pulled me to and from the cottage in a rickshaw that we found there! Then we went to the boat and had soup and cheese buns for supper.

When we first docked, someone had come to warn us about racoons. It just so happens that we met the reason racoons like to come to the boats, there was a lady who left out a big plate of dog food, bugers, hot dogs, cinnamon buns and stuff for the 'coons! Anyway, she said that they came at different times during the night, but the first ones came at nine, so we stayed up to see the first ones.

Gramps said that at 3 AM he heard thumping above him, he turned to Granny and said, 'do you think there is one up on the roof?' And Granny said, 'look!' And there were THREE racoons on the top window of the boat peeking in at them! (I didn't see them, I was asleep!)

That's all for now, Pt. 2 comin' soon!
