A Midwife waited patiently at the side of the newly widowed queen. The chamber was clean and candles stood on the table giving the room a dim light. Another midwife who had been sitting quietly at the foot of the bed raised her head and said
"Lisle, go get a bowl of milk."
Lisle got up from where she sat and walked out of the room on the errand. She heard a scream and hurried back to the chamber but the other midwife already had the baby.
She felt a sinking feeling as she watched the last heir being wrapped in a clean white cloth. What had she done now? Left when she had been most neede she had promised to save him. He would surely be killed. It was obvious that the mother would not live long after childbirth and then the aby would only stand in the way of an uncle who could easily dispose of him.
A tear settled in her eye as she watched the tiny baby with same firm mouth of the late king.
"Come here and take the baby, Lisle."
The older midwife hurried our of the room for some more cloth.
Lisle laid the baby the baby in a cradle by the bed. It was twins and this time she was by herself.
The mother raised her head.
"Lisle, keep them safe hide him from his uncle keep him safe. The older one is Callen and the other on is Keelan, after their father and my younger brother, who is far away in Italy." Her voice faded.
Lisle knew that she had died. She wrapped the baby in another cloth and put him on her cloak where the other midwife could not see him. The other midwife came back into the room.
"She's died. She said to call him Callen after her husband/"
"You go along, dear. It's late."
"Thank you. I will."
Lisle took her basket with herbs and the baby wrapped in her cloak. She made her way out of the chamber and hurried outside. It was cold and the thought of the baby that was going to have a certain death under his cruel uncle's hand burned in her mind.
Tears raced down her face as she held the baby tight against her chest trying to keep tiny thing warm.
She ran all the way down the road right up to the blacksmith's shop. She knocked at the door and it was quickly opened.
