I'd prefer never to relive these past six days, since that spinach recall. (I promise I'll NEVER write about spinach again.) I'm the kind of person who has trouble letting go and leaving things in God's hands. No, I have to do my best to be responsible for every single aspect of my life at times and all it does is make me a nut case. I've spent all this week praying and checking the web for any news updates on the spinach. Anyway, I believe we are in the clear now and I'm going to get on with living again. So, how are you all doing? We had a reasonably good first week of school and the second week seems to be going o.k. The kids are settling down a bit, now that they realize I am serious when I say, "O.k., time for school!" Typing (or, rather, keyboarding - come on, Mom, get with the times) has become the fun new subject for our boys. 8 yo Alec has been working with a really inexpensive typing program on my computer that I picked up a few years ago and 11 yo Chad decided he couldn't let his little bro best him. They think they are playing a game but it really is a lesson, no game involved, they just think it's fun. I love that, don't you? I marvel at the fact that I learned to type when I was 7, using an old manual typewriter like the one you see on some bloggers' sites (BattlementsofRubies comes to mind). We've come so far in what seems like a short time to me! I've been considering getting Quarter Mile Math (anyone tried that program?) It's a math drill program that uses either horses or race cars to track the kids' progress. Thought it might be a good way for my boys to practice more since math requires more time than they devote to it. I'm not crazy about using the computer for school but I'll make the exception if I think it's worth it. We've used the computer, videos, book programs and various other things to learn French for the past three years, we even have some kids books written in French (Ou Est Spot?) but we kind of stopped working at it last year. I have a terrible time retaining what I learned but if we start up again, it comes back to the kids so I know some learning happened. And I want to start up again, soon. When we are all learning and trying to speak it, we have a lot of fun. It's just so hard! I appear to be rambling so I'd best go. |

I remember those clunky old typewriters that used to get their keys jammed together or not hit the paper hard enough. My dad's work had one which I used to bang away on. How funny to think that this archaic technology was around the place as recently as the '70s.
I haven't heard of Quarter Mile Math but it sounds like fun. Anything to make the subject fun sounds worth looking at.
I'm glad you're through the spinach hassle. I read about that on a few other peoples' blogs too. The E-coli outbreak must've been huge.
By the way, what a lovely photograph. It's nice to see what you look like.
Take care,
Paula
