A Memory Tag

I've seen this tag around, most recently on appleleaf's blog, so I've decided to try to remember my youth.  This may be difficult as I've managed to forget most of my life BMTO (that is, Before Moving To Oregon).  Here goes:

When you were a kid, what did you want to do when you grew up?

Be a model.

What do you want to do when your kids grow up?

My husband wants me to be a model (older models are getting work these days).

I personally would like to wear a bikini without a child snickering.

I'm sorry, this is supposed to be serious.  I'd like to be a published writer, not for the fame, for the money.  Geesh, this is embarrassing!

Addendum:  After reading the above the next day, I thought this made me sound very shallow so I would like to add it would be great satisfaction to be published but I really would like to contribute to our family income, something I have not done in a long time.  O.k., I feel better!  Let's continue:

List 3 favorite childhood foods.

I really didn't like to eat.  But if I did, I liked:

  1) Milkshakes

  2) Tacos

  3) Apples & carrots

List 3 favorite foods now

I still don't really like to eat.  However, I do like:

  1) Dove chocolate (I know, this is old news)

  2) Is there anything else?

  3) Homebaked bread

List 3 top music favorites of your teens

  1) Depeche Mode

  2) Duran Duran

  3) Devo

List 3 top music favorites now

  1) Depeche Mode (the music, not too keen on the lyrics)

  2) The Waifs (Australian folk band)

  3) Changes with my mood.  I love so many different kinds of music.  Currently loving a CD of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass best hits.  Childhood memories!

List 3 interesting things about you back then

 1) For a time, I suspected my parents were spies and I was not really their kid.

 2) In first grade, I had a short story published in the local newspaper.  Must have made an impact.

 3) I accepted Christ as my Savior on my knees in front of the TV after watching a Christian program.  God moves in mysterious ways.

List 3 interesting things about you now.

 1) All three of my children were born in the same (pink) hospital room.  (No, I didn't make a reservation - God just knows I love pink.)

 2) Never think twice about smells, scents or odors, as I was born without a sense of smell.

 3) I love to dissect music as I listen (Hey kids, hear the piano - now, hear that trumpet?)

List 3 favorite books as a child

 1) All the "Little House" books by Laura Ingalls Wilder

 2) "My Side of the Mountain" by Jean Craighead George

 3) Ripley's "Believe It Or Not" books

List 3 favorite books now

 1) "The Magic of Provence" by Yvone Lenard

 2) "Under The Tuscan Sun" by Frances Mayes (as well as 3 other Tuscany books she's written)

 3) "A Year in Provence" by Peter Mayle (and his other nonfiction Provence books)

List 3 favorite childhood places

 1) Our family room, in the warm corner behind the TV set.

 2) Edenton, North Carolina, on my grandmother's wooden porch swing.

 3) The beach, usually Huntington or any nice, warm, southern California beach would do.

List 3 favorite places now

 1) Any nice, warm southern California beach will do.

 2) Any time I feel safe in God's hand.

 3) Curled up on the couch, reading to my kids.

List 3 favorite childhood movies

 1) Charlotte's Web.

 2) Marx Brothers films, take your pick (except Animal Crackers)

 3) African Queen

List 3 favorite movies now

 1) The Man From Snowy River

 2) The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara

 3) Out Of Africa

3 favorite T.V. shows from your childhood

 1) The Brady Bunch

 2) I Love Lucy

 3) The Wild, Wild, West

3 favorite T.V. shows now

We do not have TV but we do watch videos.  Of these, I like:

 1) As Time Goes By (excellently written British sitcom)

 2) Star Trek: Next Generation

 3) The Dick Van Dyke Show

How many kids did you think you'd have?

Zero.  Was told at a young age that I might not be able to have kids.

How many did you have?

Three.  All natural births.  Isn't God amazing!

3 things you thought you'd do when you grew up (and did you do them?)

 1) Model - only a few local (unpaid) shows, over the years.

 2) Actress - plays in school and skits at church - do these count?

 3) Adopt a child when I hit 30.  No, I didn't do this but my husband and I occasionally talk about it.

3 things you never thought you'd do but did.

 1) Start my own typesetting business and run it for 2-1/2 years in CA.

 2) Move to Oregon and raise llamas (we no longer have them, sniff!)

 3) Give birth to 3 kids and homeschool them.

Your dream car as a teenager

 A Volkswagen Convertible Bug

Your first car

A 1968 light blue Volkswagen Bug (Beetle actually, says my husband, but we called it a Bug)  Sadly, not a convertible :-(  But it was a heck of a lot of fun!  Still miss it.

Your dream car now

A car that has 3 separate soundproof compartments in back to separate my 3 children, preferably a hybrid and an awesome stereo system.  In a pleasant shade of pink, to make my skin glow.  This is a dream, right?

What do you drive?

I prefer driving our hybrid Toyota Prius but my husband usually gets that one.  I get to drive our gigantic 15-passenger Ford SuperClub Van.  And believe me, with my 3 kids, it's still not big enough to keep the peace!

Who would you like to tag?

If I've held your attention to this point, consider yourself tagged.  It's been a real brain workout to remember some of this stuff but it's been a good time.  So, have fun with it.  Thanks, Paula!

Oct. 8, 2006 - Whip it...whip it good!

Posted by kateyz
I loved Devo! Every Saturday I'd go rollerskating at the local rink, and they always played "Whip It" for the fast skate. It was such a fun song! And Depeche Mode, well you already know I love them. Last year my husband bought me tickets to their Vancouver concert. I hadn't been to a concert in years! I think the last one I saw just might have been Depeche Mode in 89 in Calgary!

Anyway, I enjoyed all of your answers, glad you did the tag! I'm enjoying getting to know you better!

I like Depeche Mode too -- it's funny how you can know all the words to something, yet never really pay attention to what you're singing, huh?

I've always wanted to be a published writer too. I keep thinking "someday"! For me it's not the fame or money -- but the feeling of accomplishment it would give me!

Wow Kate, the things I learn through this exercise! No sense of smell? And yet you can taste! Amazing. And raising llamas. Good on you for giving it a go. We've never done anything like that but have been to a few alpaca shows. I love their great brown eyes.
I enjoy "As Time Goes By" too. We followed all the series. Saw Jean and Lionel in a James Bond movie once and couldn't really take them seriously. Kept waiting for Alastair & the girls to walk in.
What a blessing that you have a wonderful family after being told you might not.
And about your last post - we've participated in "Operation Christmas Child" too. Emma had great fun filling her shoe box for a 5-9 y.o. girl at the local variety store last week. Really makes the miles between us feel less, to think that both our families are contributing in this at the same time.

This was a great tag. How fun to find out such great stuff about you! I'll do this too, but I'm too tired today. We had a field trip today, and I'm plumb tuckered....hope you're doing well.....

Your tag was funny! I'll consider doing one myself when I get my next "blogger's block". Seems like I've been having them quite often lately.

BTW, the brownies didn't arrive on our front step after all. I'm so happy I could cry. WAAAAAA! But we did get all of the cookies eaten today. Mission accomplished! :-)
