My good friend in Australia, appleleaf, mentioned in her blog a story about an opossum (or, possum, whichever way you prefer to spell it). Unusual enough, since I haven't read an opossum story in a long time. So I found it odd that the next day, I came across a muffler scarf that my mil bought for me last year when she toured Australia/New Zealand. I had gotten it for Christmas and had put it away and, you know, out of sight-out of mind. Anyway, I decided it was time to wear it since scarves seem to be on everyone's neck lately. I read the tag that was still on it. Can you believe it? It's made of wool and - get this - opossum!!! It comes from New Zealand and, supposedly, opossum is the up-and-coming new fiber in the weaving world there. Great. Now, not only do we have to run over the little critters in the road (they can be a hazard in Oregon), I have to wear one around my neck! It's a pretty scarf with a sheep and a kiwi design on the border so I washed it according to the directions on the tag. Laid it out to dry near the wood stove. When it was dry, I tried it on for my husband to see. Accepted the favorable comments. Took it off and went to get ready to go out. That's when I noticed I had a ring of what looked like cat hair around my shoulders. I don't own a cat. I don't own any animal with fur. Great. Now I have a pretty scarf THAT SHEDS! Guess what? That pretty scarf will get tucked away for another year. Or more. Until I can figure out what goes with opossum hair. Just don't tell my mil. |
