Power and other thoughts

I promise this blog is not about the weather but, since we were hit with the worst storm in over a decade, I'll just hit a few interesting (or trivial, depending on your mood) items.  Thursday a.m:  Freight train-sounding wind, unrelenting rain -  husband is skeptical that we'll lose power, wife is absolutely certain and begins freezing water in containers just in case.  2:30 p.m:  Husband leaves for work, wife sees him looking alarmed at the woodpile as he pulls out of the driveway.  Wife sees tarp is flapping wildly and precious wood (heat source!!) is getting soaked.  Wife dons rain gear and braves the storm to cover wood - gust of wind throws her into the fence and she hangs on and covers head.  Hears cracking of wood somewhere (a tree?)  Gets wood covered and later discovers that she was hit with 60 mph gust according to wind gauge.  3:30 p.m:  Wind blows off everything covering wood pile, including boards that were holding down tarp - sigh - wife goes out again, gets completely soaked this time.  4:00 p.m:  Out go the lights!  Wife goes into survival mode - throws ice into both refrigerators, sternly warns kids not to open them and everyone looks for flashlights and candles.  Long, dark evening.  Wife prays and works on Christmas cards by candlelight.  Entire town, and even county, out of power.  Freight train-sounding wind laughs at us.  10:45 p.m:  Husband returns, says only lights in town are med facility he was working at, the hospital and the local radio station.  Long night.  Pray for day break.  7:00 a.m:  Husband gets up to buy big bags of ice.  Wife boils water on woodstove (thank you, Lord, for woodstove) and plans day according to what we can do without power.  And then ... 10:30 a.m. POWER RETURNS!  Praise the Lord and thank you!  Now, what do we do with all this ice?

Our local paper printed the largest headline I've ever seen on a newspaper.  It said, "POWERLESS", referring to, of course, the county being out of power.  But, you know?  I didn't feel powerless - I was praying all evening, night and morning.  Man may feel powerless but God is NEVER powerless.  We can use the power of prayer to not feel powerless and let me tell you, it was a comfort to know that I could talk to God during those scary hours.  The day after the storm turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day, so I went for a walk up and down our hill.  I hadn't been out for several days and it felt great.  I was walking peacefully along when I noticed a rather large flock of starlings gathered around a power pole and stretched across the powerlines.  I slowed down and approached carefully.  It felt just like a scene from "The Birds" (remember that old film).  Any moment now, Alfred Hitchcock, himself, was bound to make a cameo appearance from behind a tree or something.  It was REALLY eerie!  With each step, a few birds would fly away until finally they all took off.  Stupid starlings.  Sorry, I may be a bird watcher, but I don't like starlings.  I had another old film moment today (Sat.)  while I was vacuuming.  There is a scene from the really old film, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir", where Lucy asks the sea captain (the ghost) about his childhood.  He was raised by his grandmother and he was sure she was glad he left to go to sea because he always got her carpets dirty.  Lucy looks lost in thought and he asks her what she's thinking.  She says, "I'm thinking of how lonely your grandmother must have been, with her clean carpets".  Something to remember the next time you sigh and, again, sweep up the dirt your precious darlings have tracked in from their adventures outside.  Believe it or not, someday we'll miss cleaning up those muddy tracks!

the ghost and mrs nuir - what an odd show that was... and the quote about the gramma... well, that was my gram... she had the plastic covered couch, the damp mop at the ready and we had to wear socks on the carpet so our oil from our feet would not leave a residue.. huh???

Its sad that those are the memories I have... I have promised my children that i am going to be the coolest, funnest most loveable granny -- and spoil their kids immensly!!

Oh -- and the "birds" -- iickkkkk!!! We are inundated with black birds at harvest time - there are thousands of them - seriously - and yes, I get that same creepy feeling - all because of that movie...

Glad the sun was out the next day...

I'm off to DR tomorrow - I'll post in the evening about latest updates..

Ciao Bella!

Hi Kate! I thought I'd just check in to see how you all were faring. I just read about the carbon monoxide poisoning out in your area, but I see that you have the wood stove instead of the more dangerous ways of keeping warm. In my single days, I had a wood stove. There just isn't anything warmer than wood heat! Lots of work, but sure worth it! Glad the Lord was watching over you all.

No, we didn't lose power. It blew pretty good but out power stayed on. People close to us did lose power though. My mother-in-law lost both her power and her phone until Sunday. Glad you are back on!

Glad to hear you all fared ok. We too only lost power for an evening, but I think that was somewhat unusual. My brother lives on the other side of Vancouver, and their power was out for a week!! I can't imagine going a week.
I saw The Birds when I was younger - horrible, awful, I really don't like birds at all, any birds, even cute little humming birds. I always suspect them of getting ready to peck me to death!

That was such a romantic movie! Now I'll have to find it to watch again. We did our annual viewing of "It's a Wonderful Life" yesterday--one of my traditions. I've had those "The Birds" moments. Every fall we get a HUGE flock of grackles that stop at our feeder on the way south. I'm talking around a hundred black birds in our front yard, and that's a modest estimate!
Had to laugh about the ice. We still have a 5lb. bag from a blackout during the fall!
Peace and Joy! Finish your cards!

Hi Kate,
Good to be back catching up.
Wow, it's wild weather you're having. The way you described it sounds like a modern updated scenario from the "Little House" books, you know, where Pa is away and Ma has to hold the picket lines to get to the barn to do the chores. I'm glad your power is back and glad it didn't happen on Christmas Day. (Well, let's hope it doesn't happen again on Christmas Day)
You know, I'm not sure if there is any fundamental difference between possums and opossums either. Your moulting possum scarf sounds very pretty! I think they're quite cute as long as they don't get into the ceiling and do what possums like to do.
By the way, your Christmas tree looks great. I had to laugh when you said it took a bit of effort to get the photo on your blog. The exact same thing happens to me. On the few occasions I've downloaded photos I've needed to get Andrew to come and do it for me. What seems to be effortless for so many people takes him ages and ages of trial and error.
If I don't catch up before, we wish you and your family an excellent and blessed Christmas.

Dec. 20, 2006 - No lights and rubber snakes?

Posted by floridasnowflakes
That reminds me of our delightful power outages in NC ice storms and now our infamous FL hurricanes. It's amazing how dependent we are. My kids always love it though. They play with the flashlights and get out of school work. It's also an excuse to eat MRE's. (gag)

As for the rubber snakes, you just can't have too many, lol. Those are a commodity around here. My ds just might trade a Henty for a nice gruesome looking one :)

Hope the weather's looking up!

I was going to ask you about that storm!! We are pretty protected by mountains and trees so we didn't get the "freight train-sounding wind"- YIKES!
Our electricity flickered on & off several times, but we never lost it longer than that. In town, however, there were lots of power outages. It was a mess in town- they're right on the water.
LOL! (laughing at just the similarities, not at your situation)- my children know NOT to open the fridge either!
Love how you tied in your paper's headline to how it feels having God at our side! SO true!
Yes, I agree that we'll miss cleaning up after little ones! *sniff!*

Love,
Alyssa... who loves Kate's posts! :)
