Where Should We Live?

I have a question for you - any of you.  Where's the best place to live?  I'd love to hear why you are living where you are living and why it's a great place to live.  You don't need to reveal the exact city or town, it could just be a general description (like, southeast US or, say, latitude/longitudinal coordinates).  You all know I live in Astoria, Oregon.  It has its up and downs, like most towns of 10,000 residents.  It has its characters and way too many bad pizza places.  No, make that WAY too many mini espresso huts.  They are everywhere!  EVERYWHERE!  I mean, how many does a little town need?  And when they built a new Safeway at the east end of town, they had to put in a Starbucks, just for good measure.  Across the bay in tiny Warrenton, I kid you not, there is a Starbucks in a new strip mall and across the street, there is another Starbucks inside the Fred Meyer grocery store!  Insane!  And in this same general crossroads on the hwy, there are four, count'em, four pharmacies.  It's stupid!  Where, oh, where are the Italian restaurants?  Or the Nordstrom Racks?  Oh, geez, I've digressed again - sorry!

It's not that Astoria is bad by any means.  (It's quite lovely here.)  The town is not the reason why we might be moving.  But it's looking like we will need to decide soon.  And we don't have a clue.  Well, my dh has a few ideas but they are BIG ideas - major moves that I don't think I'm ready for at the moment.  So, I am looking for some ideas as to where to go, if we decide to go.

And since I am blessed to hear from so many awesome people here on my blog, I thought I would turn to you for your ideas.  If you don't wish to comment on where you live, I wouldn't mind a prayer or two.  When we moved into this house 9 years ago, I knew then that it wasn't forever.  I felt God telling me it was just for now.  9 years is a long now, I have to admit, but I am ready to let this house go.  We love the house, love the view, but wish we had some space around us.  It's been a pretty good neighborhood, all around.  But still, no space.  Since I have always lived within 20 miles or so of the ocean, I do not wish to be much further away from it.  Silly, I know, but knowing that the ocean is there, makes me feel less hemmed in.  What is it about water?  I don't even swim that well!

So, if you would like contribute to our decision making, I would love to hear your ideas.  You could even suggest a place you'd rather be living.  Dream big!  We are!  We can pretty much go anywhere, as long as there is the need for nurses and it's legal to homeschool.  And it would be great if there was a good Italian restaurant nearby!

My husband and I have decided that the Skagit Valley here is the best place we've ever lived. It's mighty rainy, but we're sortof used to that. (bet you are too)

So, when we're rich (hahahaha) we've decided to come back up here to retire. It's so pretty it's breathtaking. seriously. And I'm not that easily impressed.

and homeschooling is HUGE. I mean, big. There's kids around town all the time here when I jot around during the school year. In fact, the guy who rented our hosue told us that hsing is very big here. I think it's because of the military base.

oh, and because of the base? it was the coolest, most patriotic 4th ever. Their parade was awesome. WIth planes and helicopters to start us off. (and little boys saying, "Hi Daddy!" at the planes. (sniff, sniff)

We would consider Pennsylvania if hubby can't find a better position around here (bad work situation right now). The benefit is it's an easy trip to NYC for the best pizza in the world, as well as bagels.
For homeschooling I'd say Connecticut, which would also be an easy pizza trip and it has the fringe benefit of being one of the easiest states to homeschool in. It can be expensive to live in any of the waterfront communities though.
I feel so sad that you're good pizza deprived. If you ever come east let me know and I'll give you directions to the best pizza in the world. (Remember, fold and pick up, New Yorkers do not use knives and forks on pizza) ;o)

Peace and Laughter,

(You did say big didn't you?) How about England? Being an island, I can guarentee you are never too far from the ocean. The NHS is crying out for nurses. It is legal to homeschool and there are very few restrictions or guidelines on how. And I don't know many good Italian restaurants, but being brought up Italian/American myself, I can cook pretty good Italian if you are close enough to pop over for dinner! :-) Consider it an adventure and the ultimate homeschool outing! Go on! Give us a consideration at least! LOL!

On another note, I'm playing single parent again for the next week. So more late nights on the computer avoiding going to bed alone! Please just pray, this is the first time dh has had to travel while we had extra little ones in the house!

I have a great idea! Why don't you all pack up and migrate to Australia? (Just kidding! I guess that'd be a bit too major) But we do have plenty of good Italian restaurants.
A few Starbucks have just begun to pop up around the city centres over the last year or two. We've never had them before. But Sushi bars and healthy juice outlets seem to be all the rage in cosmopolitan areas over here at the moment, along with Day Spa centres, oxygen bars and whole food outlets. Is this health revolution going on in the USA too?
How exciting for you to be considering a move. And that's probably one of the best things about homeschooling, not to have to consider uprooting kids from the schools they've settled into. I'll be interested to see where you choose.
Blessings,
Paula

We have loved everywhere we have lived: Bellingham, WA; Gresham, OR; Chandler, AZ; Fergus Falls, MN. We also liked the places we lived in only temporarily like in Iowa and North Dakota. But I have to say of all the places, I like small town Minnesota the best. I like have REAL seasons and the friendly mid-west culture.

I love moving and think that being able to choose where to go would be terribly fun and exciting, but not something we will ever do. But we never know where God will send us next...

10,000 lakes -- not quite the ocean, but beaitufl and the land is plentiful here... we live on 10 acres in a quaint town by a georgeous lake... yes it snows here, but like anywhere if the weathers not to your liking you can always play indoors...
Plus the MAYO clinic is here... plenty of nurses needed in our area...

ALthough if I had the option to live anywhere -- I would choose the coast... which one day I will return --

Just me again, catching up with my comments. Yes, fairy floss is cotton candy. It's always called fairy floss over here. It's fun to realise just how much different terminology we have for things. I guess it's quite a cute little name, come to think of it.
Logan & I thought we'd send Chad an e-card on his birthday, so make sure he checks the computer. We couldn't find a decent "Across the Miles" birthday card at the newagency (So many of them have flowers. What are boy penfriends supposed to do?) So at least we know he'll get it on his birthday. Keeping in mind that we're a day ahead of you here, we'll send it on the 26th.

Our neighbor is going to be putting their house up for sale soon... and we even have a water spigot on the side of our house and a wading pool out back! Plus, I make a mean lasagna called "Open The Prego Jar And Let The Good Spices Roll". So, there you have it! Is this Heaven? No... it's IOWA!!! :-) And, if Iowa is not quite your cup-a-java, try Missouri. Think "Pa's fiddle". There, that got your attention! ;-)

Thanks for your comments on my post. But (ssshhh), I didn't let the boys read it. Otherwise, they would want to go live with you. They get daring enough. Today, we had to crack down and "Just Say No" to riding their sleds down the stairs. :-)

Well, I don't know where the best place to live is by a long shot. I am stuck in Illinois. Pretty boring here at the Northwest part of the state, no mountains, or anything.... lots of dairy farms and sheep. It's a great homeschooling state- almost complete freedom in that department. You don't have to inform anyone or register, or be a certified teacher, or show anyone your curriculum or records. You operate as a private school under the law. You have to teach Language Arts/Reading, Math, Health/PE, Science, Social Stud., and Character. There is not set number of days that you have to teach, or hours, or specific time of the year or day. There is also a religious freedom law that further protects homeschooling rights.
I have never seen the ocean, but I know what you mean when you say you will miss a body of water. I grew up in a town with a river in it that had lots of parks along it, and now I do not live where there is easy access to a river. I miss it terribly.

While I like Oklahoma, I've lived here all my life, it has it's down side. Mosquitoes right now are awful. we do have good metropolitan cities in Tulsa and OKC.

The upside is - it's VERY homeschool friendly.

I've also enjoyed Arizona. It's actually very nice. We've visited Sedona and Mesa and Tempe and driven through phoenix. :-)

Good luck on your choices! May God only allow the door to open that He wants you to walk through!!

I loved living in Virginia (culture, history, beautiful scenery) but the cost of living where we were was so high! There are inexpensive place to live there and then there are expensive places!

I also lived in Maryland which was pretty by the water.

Now I live outside of Indianapolis which is where I grew up. I like that you're in the country/cornfields one moment and then in the big city. I like that people talk to you in the grocery stores and don't look at you like you're an idiot when you ask them a question or say something to them (that happens all the time on the East Coast!). I like the friendly Mid-westerner personalities and homeschooling is easy here. Someone mentioned Pennsylvania, but it's one of the toughest states to homeschool in...too many restrictions/requirements. Indiana isn't as scenic as other states with their mountains and water, but you don't have to drive far to be in the mountains, and there are a lot of State Parks with lots of beautiful waterfalls and the like. I also appreciate all 4 seasons. Plus, some fabulous bloggers live in Indiana! :)

I've never been there, but if I had my choice of anywhere to live in the US, I think I'd seriously consider Colorado Springs. It sounds beautiful. I also liked visiting Tennessee and North Carolina, I think I could live in either of those states too. I just want to be where God wants me to be. I'll be praying that He directs you to that spot too!

Jul. 28, 2007 - Where to live....

Posted by MOMflippedisWOW
Wow, now that takes some thinking... Years ago when we traveled everywhere, my spouse and I would play this game. Three things that my spouse wants/needs are an ocean good for scuba diving, mountains or higher terrian for hang gliding and hiking, and nice fields, woods and open pasture for horses. I'm content ~almost~ to live wherever he wants. Currently, we live close enough we can make short hops to attain these things and we have the open fields for horses and airplanes, my spouse's first two true loves.

My spouse was born in NJ on an 85 acre horse ranch with it's own airstrip that his grandfather built. I was born in PA on a 1/4 acre with a hugh field stone house my father built. Both of us were re-located to WPB, FL as kids by our parents.

My spouse and I met in college in Palm Beach.
During that time, we lived on horseback or at the beach or on a boat or under the water, diving.

We've talked about living everywhere and come to the conclusion, that the best way is to be financially secure so you can have a nice homebase then travel wherever the wind blows. We explored moving to Austrailia back in 1998 and almost made the move. Then we learned about their gun laws and nuf said.

He recently has gone on Alaska ideas and most recently, Utah dreams. Hummm... everytime he dreams, I investigate. Personally, I'd rather just visit Utah and Alaska.

My spouse has also dreamed of HI and the Carribean Islands...he grew up spending every summer in the Bahamas at a house his parents owned. So I've researched that. Beautiful, but pricey.

We, currently, live backed up to State Forest, so we can never have more then two touching neighbors. I love the fact that our place is so isolated and private. I must add, that I've come to love having a large backyard. Going back to tight living amongst the masses would be overwhelming.

On the otherside, we've 'inherited' my MIL's place in Clayton, GA. Now that makes our place seem much more metropolis, Sure her house is just a slide off a mountain, but the town is so small and limited.

Anyway, guess my point is that you have to decide which features mean the most. Both my spouse and I grew up with white Christmases. Our children have only seen snow when we've traveled to it. (The youngest had trouble with the concept of clothing... such a warm weather child.) For us, we probably won't sell and move unless they tax us out of here which looks like it might happen, so we talk of where we'll move, and at this point, I couldn't tell you.

Jul. 31, 2007 - Water is calming

Posted by Amanda10Axelby
I think water is calming and that is why it is so lovely to be around.
I actually grew up on the Gold Coast near Brisbane, Queensland, so I have many fond memories of being surrounded by water. We lived across from a beautiful Lake and woke up each morning to the sun dazzling the ripples of the water. Gorgeous.
My parents have moved from our childhood home which I am very sad about.

Why don't you move to Australia. We need nurses over here too. It is a lovely, peaceful country with plenty of friendly people.

We would love to see you over here:-)

Love
Amanda

Ooohh, what a good question! I'd suggest, since you want good Italian food, and are a bit over-run with coffee drive-throughs, that you go big and just move to Italy. Good Italian food (although not necessarily the same as what we think of here) and REAL coffee, as it was meant to me enjoyed. Lots of charm, history, etc. You said to dream big, right!
I don't know where I'd live if I coould choose anywhere. It would be a toss-up, probably between Nepal, Mexico, and Italy. They're all "my favorite" in different ways.
Thanks so much for your prayers and kind words!
Bless you,
Rebeca
