The Planning Finally Begins

Due to the realization that it is, in fact, September and it is, in fact, cold and cloudy, I am finally putting pen to paper and doing some planning for our school year.  Sigh.  We just feel like we've been waiting for summer to start and ... it never really did.  I feel like I've missed an important part of my life.  Stupid, I know.  O.k., enough whining.  And I certainly don't expect ANY sympathy because most of the U.S. is HOT still!  So, please forgive my immaturity when it comes to needing summer.  My inner California girl just won't grow up, no matter where I live.  Maybe listening to the Beach Boys will warm my soul.  Just seeing a surfer might help.  Pathetic is the word that comes to mind.

O.k., now here's where I'd like some input.  I would really like to get a Bible Study that my 12 year old son can do on his own.  I think it's a good time for him to start some deeper study of the Bible and he needs more than what we are doing on Sunday as a family.  So, does anyone out there have any suggestions?  Someone once mentioned the book, "The Praying Kid" by Stormy Omartian (was that you, Emily?)  Any thoughts on this book?  I appreciate anyone's advice.

I also bought a neat package that teaches calligraphy with pens, paper, tools, everything.  I finally brought it out today and left it on the table, where the kids would see it.  I told them we would be doing this when we started up school again and they all seem interested.  Mostly, we are just picking up from where we left off a few months ago so I needed to bring in something new for good morale.  (Morale:  "A state of a person or group's spirits and confidence."  Just what we need!)

I want to start history with my younger two but I haven't quite figured out what time period or where in history we are going to start.  My oldest needs no instruction, in fact, I could probably just have him teach them which he does quite frequently.  I'm so thankful he is such a sponge for info and reads so much on his own.  The downside is that he spoiled me - I thought homeschooling was so easy because he learned so quickly.  My other two kids actually require me to teach them - how dare they!  (LOL)

That's as far as I've gotten for now.  Any advice would be appreciated.  I've been doing this for 8 years and I still feel like a novice at times.  Can you relate?  Oh, yes, I need to pray about our school year - that should help clear things up.  It's so easy to forget that we are not on this journey alone.

Thanks again for all the nice comments and the prayers for my friend.  Hope all is well in your part of the world!

We use the Explorer Bible curriculum for our young ones, and they do a upper level to it as well. You can find it at http://www.explorerbiblestudy.org/homeschool.htm I hope that might be suitable for what you need. It is well laid out and totally possible for him to do independantly. We just got our summer last week! I know how you feel! :-)

I've barely given school a thought over the summer. It's a wonderful feeling! Now though, we're working again, like you we've pretty much picked up where we left off last year.
I'd love to know how the calligraphy goes, I've thought about trying it out with mine too~

Hiya, Kate!

Aside from the whole frustrating, overwhelming thing, isn't planning a new school year so much fun?! Yes, I am serious, yes, I am sober, and no, I'm not on any medication. I just *love* planning a new school year! Seems like no matter HOW prepared I am, it's never enough. I've resigned myself to it, and am going to be sitting down to revamp our schedule after only seven days. Apparently I *was* on medication when I wrote the schedule out, because we've had several incidences involving one book, two children, and same time slot, lol!!! Add to that the canning I'm trying to get done, and, well, that is my life right now. I'm so content..... today!!! Who knows what tomorrow will bring? :)

I know how much you must feel you've missed by not having a traditional summer. Here in Phoenix, it seems as though we only have two seasons, and those so closely resemble each other they're not very distinct. I long to feel in sync with the earth again, and to feel her seasons as though they were my own. Hopefully we'll be able to move on one of these years... I've given it to the Lord, but will take any prayers others are willing to lift up. I hope that you feel the joy of autumn, and will pray that your outlook is put at peace.

Have a wonderful end-of-week!
Hugs,
Shani

Oh, how I wish I could send you some of this very hot sunshine your way. I'd be happy to have some clouds and fog. They say it's coming our way in the next few days and I'm waiting.

Let us know what you decide for your son's devotional.

And I love the long hair! Suits you very well. Yes, your weather often reminds me of here! LOL! I guess it just makes us feel closer than we really are! :o)

I LOVE your long hair! How cute you are. :)

and you're right about being spoiled with an easy learner. My 3rd child actually needs me all the time....whatever made her think that up? lol.

And WAHOO about your specific prayer for me. The truck is only 2 years old, so I wasn't to worried about it breaking down, but accidents happen very often when pulling a trailer. It's just more dangerous, ya know?

and yes, the power of a praying kid was one my kids read. Did I post about it? man, what a memory you have!

Hi Kate! I love your new Avitar. Wow, have I been neglecting you that long? Your hair has grown a lot since I last saw you. (lol). I don't think I'll be much help with your questions. My 9 year old son loves to listen to sermon tapes from James MacDonald. That is a blessing that your 12 year old can work independently. My son is getting there. His younger sibs need my constant attention or they sneak out on our lessons!
How is your husband doing?

Sep. 9, 2007 - A Note from Your "Kindred Spririt" :-)

(...and yes, i know this isn't your most recent post, but it just seemed more appropriate here than above.)

Thanks for your comment on my last post! I am glad I'm not the only person out there like me... OK, that sounds funny, but you know what I mean. After I read your comment, I went back and re-read your post about not wanting to start school-- and I read all the comments that had been posted after mine, most of which came from people who function like you & I do. Boy, was that refreshing! We should all form a club or something. (Yeah, like we need one more distraction.) Anyway... you have GOT to go and read what I just posted today. I bet you will love it. :-)

In answer to your question, I am starting my 16th year of homeschooling. I could be a bit burned out, ya think? And if I do my youngest all the way thru, I have only 10 more years to go!

WOW, do you look different from your previous pic! I feel like I am writing to a totally different person than before! (Sorry.) I just have to change the pic in my head; then I'll be fine. It makes me realize how much my perception of you was based on your picture, in addition to your writings. I am having a really hard time putting this new pic with the person that I had subconsciously assumed you to be, based on your other pic. Funny how that works. (Does that make any sense at all?)
