What Fish Goes With Peanut Butter?

Many, many thanks for all the wonderful advice on "How to Teach Responsibility"!  As my oldest just turned 13 yesterday, I shall be putting those tips to good use.

(Look, Emily!!  Photos!)

We just returned from a three-day trip to our state's largest aquarium, about 3 hours south of us.  My kids are really into sea creatures and other shore life so this was perfect timing.  And it made Chad's birthday extra special.  Instead of parties, we usually like to go somewhere for our kids' birthdays.  All three kids loved the aquarium.  My younger two are especially taken with jelly fish.  We saw lots of jelly fish.  They are certainly more interesting swimming around in a tank than they are washed up on the shore, half-dead.  Been there.  Anyway, there is also a marine science center near the aquarium that we visited twice (this place was free), and it had even more jelly fish.  Carmen was in jelly fish heaven.  She called it "Jelly Fish Day".  She and Alec each bought a jelly fish stuffed animal and we got her a jelly fish t-shirt and pencil.  (The day after we got home, the kids got their "Ranger Rick" magazines and guess what?  There was an article on jelly fish!  Do you see a theme here?)

What I thought was so great was that the kids had already spent a lot of time drawing and reading about sea life.  At the aquarium, I didn't need to teach them - they taught me.  They already knew what a lot of the species were.  This was a visual, real-life experience that enhanced what they have learned.  I can't take credit for their knowledge of all these things, all I did was supply them with tons of books (bought over several years) and lots of time to read and learn from them.  Anything Alec draws, Carmen draws.  And they label everything, sometimes asking how to spell something if they are drawing from memory.  Learning, learning, learning.  I love it.  They will sit for long periods of time, drawing whatever is the current subject of interest.  Makes me wonder what they will go onto next.

Remember how Alec likes to dream big?  Like wanting to build his own submarine or Concord Jet?  Now he wants to build a giant salt water tank to hold jelly fish.  Sigh.

I am tired.  Very, very tired.  Some day, a trip away from home will actually be fun and relaxing for me.  Currently, that's just not an option.  Well, there were a lot of fun times, like when I was totally exhausted but my sweet dh asked me to go for a walk near the shore - just the two of us.  Couldn't say no to that!  But these trips are so much work for me.  I stress a lot.  Plus all the discipline in the car ("Don't touch your sister, don't hit your brother", etc.)  I am glad we went, though.  I loved the jelly fish, too.

Taking a family trip or an outing for your kids' bdays is a great idea. That builds family traditions and helps them think of their birthdays as a time to be with family rather than a time to be with friends. I wish I'd thought of that when my kids were younger. We have had some bdays when we did a family outing or had just a family party, but the older they get, the more we let bdays become a time for friends. (We do always have a "family party" with just the 6 of us at some point, even if the main birthday event involves a friend or friends.) Not that that is bad, but I like your way better. I also know a family who alternates doing family trips for bdays one year with "friend parties" the next.

Anyway... my oldest turns 21 on Tues, but we have to have our family party on Weds because, as usual the past few years, he has "plans with friends" on his actual bday. "Can you blame him?" asks my 17-y/o. See, they have the "birthdays are for friends" mentality. Maybe your kids won't. Alyssa aka crazybusy's kids won't either; she has posted about some great, fun bday parties where the only "guests" are sibs & grandparents!

Well, THAT was a novel. (Shoulda seen it before I edited!) Anyway, all that is to say, "good job on the family birthday outing"!

So your hubby's bday is tomorrow? You mean the 29th? That is Biz' bday, too. But we'll be celebrating tonight-- it's been changed several times due to his work schedule. We'll be doing Huz' bday, too; his was the 19th, while the youngers and I were enroute home from the family reunion. At 10 days apart, those two are the closest bdays in our immediate fam; all the others are separated by a few weeks. But in my extended family, we have 5 bdays from July 15-29 and I think 12 or 13 from mid-June thru Sept.

Well, time for me to get everyone up and ready to head to the dentist for their squeezy rats. Then we have to go bday shopping and come home & make food...

I CANNOT....CAN. NOT. BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I sortof feel that this is my 'reward' for harassing you all this time. :) haha. I love those pictures too, how hilarious is that. I won't push for more of you though, as the one with you that was in the newspaper will have to suffice.

You made me smile.

Sounds like it was a very memorable trip! Our boys do that, too... relating to me what they have learned when we go to the zoo or some other place and they come across something that they had previously read about. I don't know about you, but all I read when I was a young girl were romance books. I just wasn't aware of the real world around me. I was a poor, pitiful product of the public school system. :-)

RYC: Norman checked with our insurance company and they said that they would cover all electrical costs over $1100. The bill came to $800, so we had to pay it all. But, we are thankful that we had it... especially considering that we had just come back from a lengthy trip, with high gas prices and all.

Happy Birthday to Chad!!! 13 - (sigh).

I'm glad you all had such a great time at the aquarium. We love aquariums as well!!

I got your PM - thank you! I was beginning to get worried you didn't like me anymore. :) I'll write you back in a little bit - that's a 'thinker' email, and those require a bit more... um.... thought, which requires actual brain function, of which I have none until Monday at the earliest, lol!!!

Have a lovely weekend, Kate!
love,
Shani
