On 2 Week 2

On my blogspot blog, I just wrote a post about our first week of school.  Sum it up to say I can see some things that went well and some things that didn't.  Isn't it a blessing that we can begin again, with a new week.

My daughter definitely needs some "easing in" time to the routine of school.  I don't want her to dread it but I also try to teach my kids that there are times we need to do things, even if we don't want to and how do you know if you don't like it until you try it?  You get the idea.  Motivation and ambition are themes that keep popping up this year.  In lots of areas.  No, I should say, "A LOT of areas".  Can anyone relate?

My kids are motivated when the idea comes from within.  When it comes from me, it's a 50/50 chance that they'll be motivated.  But that's life.  Our lives do not always revolve around what "we" want to do.  And, I feel, that the sooner they learn that, the better.  However, I am not above getting them motivated to do something if they will benefit, just not all the time.

Boy, this is boring.  But it's what I'm dealing with at present.  Sometimes life is boring.

On another note - my son, Alec, continues his quest for all things jelly fish-related.  Everyday he creates at least 3-5 jellyfish from various materials and various sources.  Now he says he want to be a marine biologist.  My friend, Emily, recently posted photos of jelly fish her kids made from, I think, gelatin and gummy worms.  Alec saw them and was impressed.  But since he can't pick up gelatinous jelly fish and wave them around like they are swimming, he has not shown an interest in making jelly fish in this manner.  My opinion, anyway.  You'd be surprised just how many types of jelly fish their are.  I had no idea.

On to Week 2.

Yeah, Nathan only cared about the jello jellyfish because he was able to eat it only seconds later. :)

Nope, this was not a boring post at all! I can relate to most of what you said, esp about the whole motivation thing. I, too, walk that fine line between wanting them to enjoy "school" and wanting them to realize that there are some things (many things) we have to do whether we enjoy them or not. I think most of us do. Although we thrive on checklists at our house, I never wanted to reduce learning to simply checking things off a list. I've always wanted most of our learning to be interesting and enjoyable. That is a good and noble goal. But I increasingly find myself saying, "Get your list done. Just get your list done." I am too old and weary to try to make things enjoyable! :-) I am also really working on having Spaz do most of his work independently, for his own future good and my own present sanity. :-) And so at this point, it seems like most of our learning is indeed being reduced to things I can put on a checklist. I hope we will find some ways to make "school" enjoyable this year. But as you said, there will always be things that need to be done whether we enjoy them or not.

You know, if I would take my comments and post them on my own blog, I'd have a lot more posts. :-) (Yes, I know that was a highly intelligent and profound statement.) It's just that with a comment, I can usually bang it out; with a post, I have to analyze & rewrite & edit it to death.

Oops, sorry, that was me. I went back to edit and there was no edit button; that's when I figured out that I hadn't logged in!

What I was going to add is this: That whole over-analytical tendency is also why, although I've strongly considered doing so, I really should not start a second blog. Even if one were a "homeschool" blog and the other was an "everything else" blog, I still would have too much trouble deciding where to put many of my posts.

How fun about the jelly fish! I didn't realize there were that many. I was watching "Jon & Kate plus 8" and they showed this HUGE jellyfish on the beach and, honestly, it looked like a huge, white trash bag until you got right up on it. I never knew jellyfish could be so big! I'm sure your son would be a great marine biologist!

God bless you ~ Julie

Hi Kate,

I know *exactly* where you are in the school thing. We're supposed to be starting week 3, but the scheduling is getting away from me. We'll be lucky if we start by 10 today, and we have a normal 8.30 start time. Babbling, I know, but all this to tell you that just putting one foot in front of another is sometimes a big enough accomplishment in itself for one day. You'll figure things out, your schedule and routine will become, well, routine, lol, and you'll be back in the groove. We have some things on the horizon for the next year that are messing with my schedule and affecting it all sorts of ways, but just plodding forward a little more each day seems to help. Or at least ward off the impending doom thoughts, LOL!!

Have a lovely, peace-filled, productive week, my friend!
love,
Shani

We share Alec's fascination around here. How bizarre that jelly fish seem to have no heart, brain or central nervous systems but seem to be motivated, reactive creatures just the same. I think they must be one of God's little puzzles, just to tell us, "You can't explain everything by science."
Thank-you Kate, for your prayers and thoughts. I felt a bit tearful and sad on the day of our friend's funeral but we're remembering good times too. And we're also reciting Psalm 91 daily, as Alec suggested. I'm glad he enjoyed that story. It was such an amazing thing.
Blessings,
Paula

~~I'm scared to speak~~

I know those feelings, too, but am going a different route. Best not to let your kids read my blog.

Marine Biology is really interesting even though I'd rather avoid the jellyfish, hehehe. Jello jellyfish sound like fun though.

I totally know what you mean about motivating the kids. It's so wonderful when it comes from then. It's almost an easy ride, as you just have to steer them. But when they are not motivated, it's kind of hard to start that engine, at least it is for me. It takes a lot of energy, especially for my oldest. I know for him, if he lacks motivation, a task can take forever! I have been saying to him that sometimes the job is not fun, but we have to get it done. It has helped. He is also slowly seeing that his attitude does play a big part in how well he does. You are so not alone in this! Not to mention motivating ourselves.

We went through a jelly fish phase too. We went to the aquariam in Long Beach and saw many different kinds of them. Who knew there were so many?

It takes us awhile to get into our new school routine, too. We started the day after Labor Day, but already I've pulled one subject and tweaked others here and there. I think it's more workable now, although our oldest son is hinting around that he'd like to try the "unschooling" method. :-)

Well, Kate, guess what? I'm right up there with you now in the published writer's club! :-) I got a Letter to the Editor published! It was nothing too important, but it was still fun. You can read about it on my blog (that is, if you can get it to come up. I know sometimes you have troubles getting the pictures from my blogsite to download).
