Birthday Blur

This past week has been a blur.  I truly dislike January and February, as a rule, and this year certainly lived up to it's annual torture.  Son, Alec, turned 11 the last day of January and his birthday was celebrated without the grandparents (one was ill, which has happened way too often, this being winter and all.)  Still he had a nice day.  Two weeks later was Carmen's birthday (her 8th) but two days prior my husband came down with a cold.  Tremendous.  That meant that I had to bake the cake.  I am NOT a cake baker - Todd is.  Fortunately, I had an angel food cake mix that is foolproof and saved the day.  The decorating wasn't as good as Todd's (his mother decorated cakes as a side job and he learned a lot), but I did my best with colored sugar sprinkles and pink candles.  And if you are wondering why we didn't just go buy a cake, well, I suppose we are just so used to homebaked that store bought is a bit of a let-down.  Todd doesn't even use a mix and his cakes come out better than mine.  But I have fully accepted this and embrace it as a blessing.

Anyway, both grandparents came over and Todd was able to sit with us, at least.  Carmen had a nice day.  I was so grateful that the winter birthdays were over.  No more birthdays for months.  I could relax.

And then the day after Carmen's birthday, Carmen woke up with a sore throat.  She gets so ill, even with just a cold, that it's totally exhausting for me.  Alec got it the next day.  So for the next 3 days or so, it was majorly stressful, but God is good.  Chad and I stayed healthy and we were able to care for everyone.  It was a mild cold, and Carmen actually began to recover by Tuesday or Wednesday, I can't remember.  Now, everyone is pretty much recovered and today we went for a short walk.  The weather has been so sunny, we've been anxious to get out.  I'm a big believer in sun and fresh air to help with pretty much everything and we opened all the windows for a short time (it was still just 45 degrees, after all.)

So, that's been my life since my handsome prince brought home another toy collectible car for me.  A few days ago, he bought me flowers.  What a guy!

Hi there Kate,

I haven't visited this blog in a while & it was a nice surprise to see the lovely picture of you.

I so relate to the headache of lots of birthdays over a couple of months too. Over December and January, we have over 15 family birthdays, including my daughter's son's, husband's and our wedding anniversary. I enjoy the time, but am sooooo relieved when it is done for another year!

6 of our nine birthdays take place over a 2 month period from the beginning of August to the beginning of October.

Love the picture!

Glad all are feeling better now! Winter birthdays are sooo hard, aren't they. Bad weather and sickness ruin so many plans! Sounds like yours were OK in spite of it all! And I'm sure your cake was wonderful!

I'm glad to hear Carmen didn't have the cold on her birthday. Also glad you and Chad stayed well and the others are on the mend.
Andrew & I are just the same as you and Todd re: birthday cakes. Dad is the cake-maker. I ought to post the abysmal dinosaur cake I made for Logan's 6th birthday to show how we came to that decision.
And speaking of small collectable cars, Logan was really pleased with his little birthday parcel from you (and so was Blake) Logan was telling Blake that it's an American Mustang.
About your comment on my last post, that biography on Einstein showed up so many negative points about the school system I decided not to even write about them or it'd be hard to stop. Might save it for some other time. Interesting, to say the least.
Hope your weather is beginning to warm up to spring. We're getter some lovely cooler days ourselves.
Blessings,
Paula

I'm glad I'm not the only person who doesn't just LOOOOVE her kids' birthdays. I've always felt a little guilty about that. Yes, birthdays are fun, but they can be a little stressful too, esp with trying to decide on just the right gift(s)-- and moreso if we are having more than just an immediate-family celebration. Unless, of course, it is MY birthday we are talking about; then it's all fun :-).

"High Birthday Season" for us runs from end of June to mid-Sept. Of the six of us, 5 have birthdays w/in a 10-week period. The first two of those are mine & Hubz', so we have 3 KIDs' bdays w/in 6 weeks. Then an 8-week break before the last b'day, which comes 10 days or so before T'giving & then Christmas... So what we are in right now is called The Lull.

PS- Every time I get used to what you look like, you change your picture! (I don't know when you changed it, as i often read your posts right from my reader and don't come here unless I comment.) Nice pic, though. Better than the deer head :-).
