Living for the King

Dec. 4, 2008 - Everything I Need to Know I've Learned Through Homeschooling

I am so thankful that we homeschool for so many reasons.  The longer we do it, the richer the experience is.  God has grown me through this homeschooling journey in ways that I know He wouldn't have, had I decided to work in my profession full-time and send our boys to school outside our home.

For example, I was a Type A person and all that that entails.  I wanted things done my way because it was best afterall, right?  Well, God showed me that as I tried to homeschool "my way" I was destroying my children's love of learning and damaging our relationships.  It's exhausting to be a Type A.

Now, the sheer enormity of homeschooling, keeping up the home (well, sort of), and working part-time on the weekends forces me to be much more relaxed, and I am glad.  God knows what we need and is ever so gracious to provide it : )  We follow a much more relaxed approach now, and I have seen the boys flourish with this type of lifestyle.

Also, I have always known that relationships are more important than things, but didn't really live that out in practice.  Nothing brings you face to face with that choice more than being home with your children during the day.  I'm afraid I wouldn't have learned this valuable lesson until much later in my life had we not chosen to homeschool.  The "things" that entangled me may not be the same for you.  But for me those "things" were tight schedules and others' opinions.

I am terribly guilty of trying to work things out in my own strength--still.  But God has shown me time and time again, that dependence on Him is what He is after.  I have been known to worry and stress over something just to have the problem solved simply and effortlessly by God when it was time.  All that worrying, wasted energy, and grumpiness was for naught.  I'm starting to believe that  homeschooling is as much for the parent's benefit as for the children's.

So I encourage anyone who is considering homeschooling to jump in!  You won't be by yourself.  God will be with you, and will reward you as you look to Him for guidance.  I guarantee you that you will learn more than your children!

I definitely feel like the homeschooling experience does just get richer as time goes by. What a great way to put that.
