Sep. 16, 2006 - For Shame

I love Germany.  It's a beautiful land full of beautiful people, good food, great history, and wonderful landmarks.  But I am absolutely disgusted by the German government's treatment of homeschoolers.

Katharina Plett is in a German prison for the crime of homeschooling.  Worse yet, the mother of 12 was arrested on the basis of a law created by Hitler, banning homeschooling.  Mrs. Plett's husband fled with the children to Austria the previous day.  I don't know why she stayed, but regardless, her treatment at the hands of police was unacceptable.  The police would not let her change in privacy before they took her to jail, because they feared that the homeschooling mother would arm herself and shoot them.  Pathetic!  It seems to me German authorities ought to be looking elsewhere among their citizens and residents for such violence.

Say a prayer for Familie Plett today.

Hitler may be dead, and the his war may be over, but his ideology is not. How much longer until we too face such treatment?

I too look at a house and wonder where I would put all my stuff. Right now we live in the biggest house we have ever lived in, but it is by no means a mansion! Still, well meaning family member keep giving us things and we have to figure out where to put it all. There are days I wish I could be rid of it all and live in a hut.

Do you get updates from HSLDA? I got one today that this is not the only case like this, there are many. It makes me thankful though! I know though like in Russia it used to be illegal to homeschool and Christians sent their children to school, women worked because they had to also and some of them through being persecuted in school and at work became stronger Christians as they had to. What do you think of this?

I can't answer for everyone, of course, but I can assure you that my faith has grown tremendously throughout our entire ordeal so far, from needing to be sure that it really was from God that we NOT put our children in school to needing to be sure that it really was from God that we DO put the children in school for half a year. Then we left the country for six months, and are back again because we know this is where God wants us to be. (Long story, bits and pieces of it on my blog...) Without the problems with homeschooling, in all honesty, we never really would have thought of leaving (too comfortable), and would have missed out on an incredible six-months. And without leaving and having to make a conscious decision to return to and stay in Germany, we might never have been so sure that this is where God wants us to be. At the moment we know that we DO belong in Germany and that the children are NOT to be in school. It's really quite amazing to be so confident of God's will and secure in HIs presence--I wouldn't miss it for anything! And I'm as curious as anyone else what our next step will be...
