Sep. 27, 2005 - [drumroll] Today, we socialize
We are one of those odd families that keeps our children out of daycare, out of "preschool", out of Sunday school, and only lets them hang with peers (not that the baby can do much hanging out at this point) when we are right there with them. I know a lot of people think we are depriving our children of something special. They wonder if our toddler can be entirely happy in life, as his schedule is not full of play dates and parties. They look at me like I'm kooky when I explain that we like for him to sit in church with us. They suggest daycare to help him "learn to play with others" and "get a headstart on his education", never mind that he's perfectly wonderful with other children and is ahead of the game when it comes to what a two-year-old should know about alphabets and numbers and how to eat a peanut butter sandwich. They shake thier heads and whisper to each other about the hermit-like existance of our children.
Anywhoo, I suppose I should make a logbook and enter today in it, just to prove that our child does, in fact, get "socialized". My friend is bringing her almost-two-year-old over, and the boys will spend the morning playing together. They will tear apart my house, strew toys all over the floor, go in the backyard and roll around in the dirt, track mud on my already filthy kitchen floor, and tear apart the house some more. Then we will sit down for some yummy sandwiches and applesauce, making sure to scatter crumbs on the floor and carefully drip applesauce all over everything. And then, after they tear apart the house some more, my friend and her little boy will go home, and I will consider our socialization quota filled for at least a week. Maybe two.

Amen, amen--that oughta do it for the socialization quota! We, too, are ones that have kept our children close or been close by as they 'socialize' with others. Bravo to you--ours are 12 and 10 now and let me tell you, tis worth it!!

Whew! Oh yeah! Yesterday was definately a months worth of socialization. No question.
They tore up the house, strewed toys, tracked mud, and scattered crumbs. And we all had a grand time!

We also keep our children close by. Our children do have one friend down the street who plays here most of the time. His grandma and I are on the same page on what to expect of the children's behavior. Our children also tend to sit with us in service.
