Jun. 14, 2008 - Super Savings Saturday

See more Super Savings at Money Saving Mom!

I hit the jackpot this week at the grocery store.  The manager at our local Giant Eagle regularly pulls almost-expired items off the shelf and marks them waaaaay down rather than throwing them away.  When I stopped in, I found two full carts overflowing with pasta and some other packaged meals.  Generally, I wouldn't have been too interested, but I have been desperately trying to cut our grocery spending, so I thought "Well, maybe we'll just eat horrible packaged food this week and give the checking account a break".  Everything I got was between .25 and .99 cents and I ended up with about 7-8 meals worth of food.

What you see there--a small package of beef
brown rice
calomine lotion (not discounted, but a necessity for me in poison ivy season)
2 tortelini with spinach meals
bunches and bunches of "organic" Pasta Roni meals
4 "family size" packages of Kraft three-cheese mac-n-cheese
8 pckgs Betty Crocker pizza dough mix (which I used last night and it was awesome!)
8 pckgs apple muffin mix
2 jugs organic beef broth
1Hershey's chocolate icing
1 Vienna mocha coffee drink mix (good gift item)

The total for all this was $17.21.  I didn't use coupons (didn't have any!) but I had a $10 gift card that needed to be used, so I was able to get an even better deal.  And having thought my menu through, this much pasta won't kill us.  I'm going to doctor it up and redeem it and we'll enjoy it and not die of packaged meal overdose.  Combined with my trip to Aldis today, I spent $92 and we will easily coast through the next two weeks, possibly a little longer.

I love the Giant Eagle Discount carts, too. At our local G.E., "gourmet" items usually end up in the discount cart, so I've been able to pick up some items I otherwise wouldn't have sprung for out of our grocery budget.

Good deals! We usually stretch Rice/Pasta Roni with frozen veggies and meat added- its not quite as scary that way.

How nice!! Pasta and rice will not kill you for awhile and you do not have to use it all up these next two weeks....
