Jun. 16, 2008 - Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World--Blog Tour and CONTEST!

I really felt like I’d received a present when I got Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World in the mail. It is a beautifully designed book and I just knew I was going to enjoy it as I pulled it out of the envelope. Of course, you’re not supposed to judge a book by it’s cover, but my initial assessment proved correct. Joanna Weaver is an excellent writer and this book gets to the “heart” of the matter…keeping our heart attitude right in the midst of a frantic and care-laden world. I knew before I opened the book that I tend to be a Martha-I get all caught up in the activities of faith and life, and find it difficult to sit in quiet at the feet of my Lord. It’s not that I don’t try. But whenever I get settled, I find a reason to pop up-the kettle boils, the baby needs me, we’re having company in a few hours and I forgot to scrub the toilet…
I am one who wants to do….all the time.

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World is an invitation for every woman who’s ever felt she isn’t godly enough, isn’t loving enough, isn’t doing enough.

The life of a woman today isn’t really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the
New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord’s feet…but the daily demands of a busy world just won’t leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him…yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy.

Then comes Jesus, into the midst of your busy life, to extend the same invitation he issued long ago to the two sisters from Bethany. Tenderly, he invites you to choose “the better part”–a joyful life of intimacy with him that flows naturally into loving service.

With her fresh approach to the familiar Bible story, Joanna Weaver shows how all of us–Marys and Marthas alike–can draw closer to our Lord: deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.

I had this book and read it awhile back. It was a good book from what I remember. Recently though I was clearing some books off the shelf and it went along. However I believe my friend rescued it. I shall have to see if she has read it yet.
