Going Against the Grain

Friday, August 18, 2006 - Sarah & Emma will be learning:

History

We will be learning about Christopher Columbus.  We will find out that he believed God wanted him to spread the faith of Christianity.  Christopher said, "For this was the alpha and omega of the enterprise that it should be for the increase and glory of the Christian religion."  Unfortunately not everyone shared his excitement.  Most kings and queens of Europe were more interested in gaining wealth.  No one wanted to help Christopher.  King John of Portugal pretended to be his friend, but he was not a nice man.  He tried to cheat Christopher and stole his plans to sail to a new world.  But this caught up with him and the mission was a failure.  King John was sorry afterward.  Queen Isabella of Spain believed in Christopher's dream and even pledged her own jewels to fund the trip.  This woman made a difference.  Columbus did not give up.  He fought for what he believed in and succeeded.  In August of 1492, Columbus and his small fleet sailed into the unknown.  On October 11th, 1492, his dream became a reality.  "Land!  Land!"

Science

We will be learning about the flying creatures of the fifth day.  We will dive into a study in zoology--learning about all the amazing flying creatures God created.  We will learn how they are classified and who is in their family.  We will learn about their habitats and the special features God gave them so they could survive.  We will learn what extinction is and what flying creatures we will never see because of this.  Foremost, we will learn about God's wonderful hand guiding those amazing creatures in the air!

Bible

We will be learning about choosing thankfulness.  "Give thanks no matter what happens.  God wants you to thank Him because you believe in Christ Jesus."  I Thessalonians 5:18.  We will see that Jesus even told His disciples to be thankful.  "In this world you will have trouble.  But cheer up!  I have won the battle over the world."  We will focus on all the many things we have to be thankful for because Jesus died for us.
