A Little Background Information on my "Subway Excludes Homeschoolers" Posts & The Apology from Subway

Apparently, my posts about Subway excluding homeschoolers from their recent writing contest has caused quite a debate in the world of homeschoolers. I have been being called a "loon," among many other NASTY things (including many swear words) from fellow homeschoolers. Since Subway has issued an apology, I have since deleted my original post for obvious reasons....action is not needed any longer and I don't want my post to make it seem as though there's still reason to speak up about the matter. BUT...for those who are hearing about my postings (as if I'm the only one posting/blogging/e-mailing about this), here's some background as to why I thought this should be spoken out against.

Since this has caused such a reaction, I would like to explain my reasons behind my postings. I imagine that I would tend to be a little more sensitive about things like this since I grew up in a "pioneer" homeschooling family, when homeschoolers were not as pleasantly looked upon as they are today (to say the least). We all worked hard for the freedoms that all homeschoolers enjoy today (very leisurely, for the most part, I must say), and I have a hard time taking them for granted and looking the other way when we're "excluded" from something like this contest. I've seen how far we've come as homeschoolers and I am very careful to make sure that we keep these precious freedoms that we all enjoy today!

Will Subway's contest prevent us from homeschooling in the future; will it prohibit our hard-earned freedom to homeschool? No. BUT it does limit us in the educational arena. We are prohibited, solely because of our choice in how we educate our children, of entering an educational contest. Where's the progress in that? Is there not a way that homeschoolers can be included?

It seems to me that my blog has attracted much attention on this subject. However, I am not the only person who viewed this issue in this way. The Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) wrote Subway a letter AND received a formal apology from Subway. The American Family Association (AFA) has also taken a stand and received an apology, and many other pro-homeschool publications wrote outraged editorials, as well. Below is the HSLDA's original letter and the apology from Subway, for those who are interested in the outcome of this.

Sincerely,

Lisa Metzger

Open Letter to Subway: Let Homeschoolers Enter Contest

May 27, 2008

Frederick A. DeLuca, President
Subway Restaurant Headquarters
325 Bic Drive
Milford, CT 06461-3059

Dear Mr. DeLuca:

By way of introduction, I am the President of Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) and we represent 83,000 member families nationwide. This letter is to draw attention to your “Every Sandwich Tells a Story Contest,” and the unfortunate fact that homeschoolers are not allowed to participate.

The rules clearly state: “Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted (emphasis added).”

It is extremely disappointing that Subway would choose to exclude the estimated 2 million homeschooled students.

We understand that the competition is focused on traditional public and private schools because the grand prize of $5,000 of athletic equipment is designed to be used by a traditional school and not an individual family. A potential homeschool winner, however, could simply donate the grand prize to a public or private school of their choice or to a homeschool sports league.

Homeschooling is a thriving educational option. All the available research shows that homeschoolers are excelling academically and socially. We do not deserve to be overlooked.

We hope that you will reconsider the rules of your competition and choose to amend them to include homeschoolers.

Sincerely,

J. Michael Smith
HSLDA President

Subway Apologizes

HSLDA is pleased to pass along the following apology from Subway restaurants.

To HSLDA:

We at SUBWAY restaurants place a high value on education, regardless of the setting, and have initiated a number of programs and promotions aimed at educating our youth in the areas of health and fitness.

We sincerely apologize to anyone who feels excluded by our current essay contest. Our intention was to provide an opportunity for traditional schools, many of which we know have trouble affording athletic equipment, to win equipment. Our intent was certainly not to exclude homeschooled children from the opportunity to win prizes and benefit from better access to fitness equipment.

To address the inadvertent limitation of our current contest and provide an opportunity for even more kids to improve their fitness, we will soon create an additional contest in which homeschooled students will be encouraged to participate. When the kids win, everyone wins!

Lisa, I commend you for taking the time to make us who read your blog aware of things like this and other things concerning us homeschoolers! Too bad about the name calling-I was almost sure adults wouldn't respond in such a way! I did contact Subway, via email, and am interested in their responce...
God bless you and your family!

Lisa,

I just wanted you to know that lots of us out hear in homeschooling land in Texas are in agreement with you. Maybe my reality is compromised in some way?? But, I am extremely offended that my children that work just as hard as all the other school age children have been excluded from the contest. So, shrug off all those rude comments!!! At the end of the day ALL of us have the right to our opinions!! :) I for one am glad to hear yours!!
Have a wonderful day, Mrs. Metzger and thanks for sharing your family with ours.

Blessings to you all,

I completely agree with you. In fact, I've posted about the Subway contest on my own blog and encouraged writing to Subway, signing the online petition, and boycotting. My husband and children also made their own posts about it.

Personally, I really don't care about the contest itself or the prize. What I care about is the act of discrimination. Subway's contest exclusion is only one of many examples where discrimination against homeschoolers is practiced. Unless we speak out against each act of discrimination, that discrimination will only increase over time. If we fail to speak out, we are telling the world that it is okay to treat homeschooled children differently than those in the public school system. Today, it is a sandwich contest, tomorrow it may be the right to apply to and be accept into college or public office.

We've seen, in our country's history, what happens when discrimination is tolerated. I don't wish to repeat it with a different group of people.

Lisa, I love your blog. It is one of my favorites. I did not respond to your entry about Subway, but after hearing so many horrified responses to the exclusion of homeschoolers in the contest on other blogs and groups, I did post a few places that I disagree with all the bruhaha about it.

I was a pioneer homeschooler and I lived and homeschooled through all of the changes and inch by inch progress, but it was not though boycotting or petitions or demanding emails. I'm not saying that a few nicely worded Christ-like letters to Subway and Scholastic by a few people like the HSLDA were in order, but the boycotting and the email petitions are NOT how we made our way to where we are today.

I think the way it has been reacted to makes homeschoolers look like a greedy bunch that is demanding their rights. What "rights" are we willing to fight for? This would not be one for me. I believe in free enterprise. I own a business and if I decided that I wanted to bless a certain segment of society for whatever reason, I would not appreciate or want anyone trying to bully me into doing something else. Subway may have given in and apologized because they were afraid it would effect their bottom dollar, but I doubt if they have a very favorable view of those demanding homeschoolers, now.

I just wish everyone had kept their head and not reacted with the appalled attitudes. I think this is one of the first issues that I have witnessed that is giving homeschoolers a bad name and it has nothing to do with homeschooling or the freedom to do it.

Sincerely,
Liz Eubanks
