Four in Fruita

• Feb. 19, 2006 - I like this spelling!

Just wanting to say to whoever sees this that I FINALLY FOUND a spelling program that I like. We are a right brained family - we like to be creative, fun, and undisciplined! (Well - we are working on that one.) We like to know why - not just do it - we like a "framework" to hang everything we learn on and we don't like to memorize stuff. (We just arn't good at that, though we force ourselves to with the math facts and Scripture.) My husband's degree is in art and I graduated from a Bible college with a degree in church counseling - AHAH - we don't learn the normal way!  (What's normal?)

We also tend to have a little dyslexia around here too - SO - HERE ARE MY PICKS for curriculum for the rightbrained family:

Math     Making Math Meaningful   (and they do)

Writing     The Institute for Excellence in Writing - Student Writing Intensive (make sure you get the DVD's because he is really etertaining which we rightbrainers thrive on!)

Spelling     AVKO Sequential Spelling 1 for Home School (we hate spelling around here and I couldn't find something that "fit" us. Well - here it is. The AVKO Dyslexia Research Foundation puts it out (don't know much about them) and we LOVE it. You don't study! and they are learning more than ever!

ART - of course - can't live without that!

Thats it  - we supplement everything else according to our desire that day and Daddy reads aloud to them most nights. (That's called history AND vocabulary!)

To all you unique learners And teachers out there - God bless and have fun - you're not alone!

I just spotted your new post about the spelling program....I've been looking at that too and wanting to try it! We do these little "spelling bee's" from time to time that the kids love~
It sounds like you have a lot to offer your kids! Art is also one of our most favorite things to do. Stop by my blog and visit sometime, ok? Now I need to go see where Fruita is. :)

Thank you so much for sharing about Sequential Spelling. I've been on the hunt for a good spelling program for my son, who I I think has traits of dyslexia. He is almost 10 and struggles greatly with spelling and reading. I've gone to AVKO's site and looked over their sample pages and think this may be a winner for us! Can't beat the price too.
Thanks again!

Hi

We like Sequential Spelling too! I also discovered Dr. Aardsmas math and spelling drills on the computer. My oldest uses SS and the other two use Dr. Aardsmas - works for us. We also are pretty eclectic when it comes to science and history. Lots of literature is the best way for us.

BTW I grew up in Fruita. Graduated Fruita Monument in 1983. (Can't believe I admitted that! Does that tell you my age?) My mom still lives there.

Hey Carolyn! You need to post more...and get yourself some "friends." :-) Do you know Shannon Miller? She's a new homeschooler (I think she's in WINGS) and blogs at MamaMiller. I look forward to seeing you at track this week.

About Me

Hi! I journey through this teaching at home path here in Fruita Colorado. I have been married to my best friend for 16 years and we desire to make this homeschooling thing a whole lifestyle not just schooling at home. My kids are 12, 11, 9, and 4. We enjoy skiing, (I enjoy the lodge), art, film making, hiking, science, working in our yard, rocks & fossils, building things and having Dad read aloud at night - anything from The Lord of The Ring to Henty to The Very Last First Time. We want to be real to our neighbors and reflect a Christian worldview and the hope we have in Christ to a needy world all around us. We don't like wash!
