• Jan. 18, 2010 - I Heart Faces Family
• Jan. 15, 2010 - What a difference a few hours can make......
This morning I arose with my hubbie at the ripe ole hour of 6:30am.
My back has been bothering me lately and sometimes staying in bed in the morning just plain hurts.
So instead of trying to go back to sleep I decided to do something I haven't done in a while.....
My bible study.
Imagine that......
A whole hour alone with God before the noise of the house began. A cup of coffee.

My present Beth Moore study and my "barely held together" bible from my dear friend, Andrea, many years ago. And guess what today's lesson was about? Judging others - that quick judgment that comes when we immediately size someone up based on how they look or how they are acting. Talk about stepping on toes.....

Thank you God for allowing me the privilege of digging into your Word today.
Help me to yearn for you every day that way. |

• Jan. 11, 2010 - Monday Morning Blahs
Today has been one of those days I'm struggling to be thankful....
- Thankful for things like a toilet that overflowed and took 8 towels to soak up the water which leaked into the vent and down into the basement.
- Thankful for the orange juice spilled all over the floor 5 minutes later.
And then a friend called and gave me wonderful uplifting news about a friend's marriage. I have been so burdened about marriages in our church lately. I see couples falling apart all around me and remember that the fight is in the heavenlies. How often is Jesus in our ministries, our serving, but not in our families, our marriages and in our home??
I remember the triangle......
GOD
ME MY SPOUSE
Without this nothing works.
Satan gets a foothold, slowly weaving his deceitfulness into our lives.
And then one day......BAM!
Like a house built with sticks, it comes crashing down.
My heart hurts for the broken marriages I see all around me.
And I am fighting in the heavenlies for them. For victory for God's children who are married and suffering.
I stand in the gap. I imagine myself the bridge between them and the mighty warriors they need on their side. I feel them walk across my back. And still my heart is burdened by my Lord to pray, pray, pray.. Fight for them. Don't let the enemy get the victory.
Restoration.
Love renewed.
Passion restored.
Please Lord, I beg.

• Jan. 7, 2010 - Get Fresh!
Ok, now, you know what I mean. Of COURSE you do!
I mean "Get a Fresh Start" on your homeschooling journey this year!
January is always a time to start fresh, don't you think? Many brave (or funny) folks are making New Years Resolutions and trying to do some things different than last year. We can turn over a new leaf any time, but January with it's brand spankin' new calendar pages and that feeling that a "new" thing has begun seems to energize some of us. Me for sure!
Many moms I know are fretting over homeschooling, even I do that sometimes. But instead of fretting, we need to start fresh! Some new thoughts, new ideas, new strategies and new beginnings are just what the Dr. is ordering, right now.
So here is your Rx for this month: Check out a few of these wonderful links and see if your homeschool starts perking up.
- Looking for daily inspiration AND some copywork for the kids? Sign up over at Verse of the Day and get a daily Bible verse delivered to your inbox! I get them, print them off and my kids practice writing skills plus Bible memory work to boot. Right here: VOTD.org.
- My son got a kite for Christmas and is dying to use it! However, April is National Kite Flying month, and maybe it will be warm enough by then to stand outside and catch some wind! Check out this kite website: Beginner's Guide to Kites.
- Thinking about raising some chickens this year? Better have your kids research the local laws for you! We are still enjoying the wonderful eggs that our four hens, Butterscotch, Peck, Courage and oh no! I can't remember the fourth one's name. Oh man! Help me out somebody! City Chicken Laws.
- Do your kids love cowboys as much as mine do? Here is a great article all about chuck wagons! Every cowboy on the trail has to eat, ya know! All About Chuck Wagons.
- When I can't find something I need, I just look it up online. Unit studies, calendars, ANYTHING printable! Here is a little place for some freebies to print.
Don't forget to come back to visit me!
Nancy
p.s. if you made it this far, go ahead and leave me a comment. I'll give away a copy of my Haircuts For Little Men ebook to some lucky person in a few days. Tell your friends!
p.s.s., I am pretty certain all those links are "safe," however if something slipped by me, please let me know. PLEASE don't let your kids surf the internet without safeguards in place. Use Google safe-search or get some excellent cyber security. Your family is worth every effort you make to keep your computer screen clean for little eyes. (And big eyes.)
God's blessings!

• Jan. 4, 2010 - New Year's Resolution
Yesterday at church someone asked what my New Year's Resolution was. Normally I don't make them. I'm not much of a goal setter. But when I answered her in a funny way about keeping my kids alive through the New Year. She said, "So in a word, Restraint?"
And I've thought a lot about that word.
Restraint.
I do think that over my whole life that is what I will pray for this year.
Restraint.
In finances, in dealing with my children, with my tongue, TV, everywhere I look I need restraint.
Thanks friend, for opening my eyes to something God wanted me to see yesterday for the entire year.
Oh, and I miss summer. Now that Christmas is over I'm ready for the beach....

Blessings.......
Restraint.......

• Dec. 31, 2009 - Ring Out, Wild Bells!
Good bye old year!
As usual, I'm incredulous about the time passing so quickly. Equally baffled by the fact that I haven't blogged in several weeks. Oh, it's not that I don't have a hundred clever posts swirling around in my head (right) but more likely a hundred "have to do's" swirling around me constantly IRL.
In the past two months I've had a 20th Wedding Anniversary, Graduated a homeschooler, had a child reach 18 years of age, celebrated Thanksgiving, Celebrated Christmas, and am now getting ready to mourn the passing of a really great year!
I'm hoping to get some great links and photos up for you here, although it takes awhile to get those up. I still love my blog---just haven't taken the time to update it much. I do however have a facebook page, you should be able to find me and ask me to be your friend. Then you can have quick access to my updates and photos! Life just goes by so fast when you have four teenagers---I have to beat them off the computer with my cane in order to check my email. Kidding.
I hope you all have had a great year, despite the economy, the government, terrorists, layoffs, divorces and nasty neighbors! Did I miss anything? It is my prayer that you have a prosperous new year, full of homeschooling excitement, marital bliss, answered prayer, and a life lived in a way that is pleasing to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
Be sure to come back and visit me here at Homeschooling Is Life! I may have to mull over some resolutions about blogging more regularly. :)

• Dec. 28, 2009 - I HEART faces Hilarious Outtakes Photo

This week's Hilarious Photo Challenge fits great with this "outtake" of trying to get the grandkids and the grandparents photo taken while we were all together at Christmas.
But one unnamed Granddad kept acting up and pinching an unnamed Grandma in an unnamed place.
The next two photos describe it best as my niece hides her face in embarrassment as someone shouts "Grandbo STOP!"

• Dec. 21, 2009 - Bethlehem Revisited
Posted By Stephanie
This past weekend, two of my girls got to be part of a recreation called "Bethlehem Revisited" at a local church. It's fairly elaborate, starting with your "journey" to Bethlehem for the Roman census.

(These camels even gave rides in the afternoons.)
Nearing Bethlehem, we got to hear the angel announcing Christ's birth.

Just outside of Bethlehem, this man was begging for alms.

I forgot to take a picture of the Roman guards at the gate of Bethlehem, registering all entrants for the census.
Inside Bethlehem were shops of all kinds.

Here, Fairywings kneads dough at the bread shop.

Anony sold food in another shop.
There were candles, jewelry, baskets, clothing, pottery, rugs, weavers, artists--a plethora of potential purchases.

Bethlehem had a well, a tax collector, and a contingent of prominent Roman noblemen (and women).

But of course, best of all, Bethlehem had a stable with Mary, Joseph, and a newborn baby, destined to be our Savior.

The girls had a great time being involved with this and hope to do it again next year. |

• Dec. 21, 2009 - A Few Lessons and Memories of my dad--January 26, 1943 to December 18, 2009
Posted By Stephanie
Lessons I learned from my dad:
My dad was all about hard work and duty, doing well what you know you’re supposed to do before relaxing. Through his example, he built within each of us a strong work ethic and a stoic, uncomplaining attitude.
As he grew older, his emphasis became more on the eternal and soaking up spiritual truths. Our phone conversations when I was an adult usually centered around something he was studying on his own or learning in a Bible class. I realized that spiritual growth was ongoing as my dad imparted new spiritual lessons to me and I heard his heart for each of his children and grandchildren to spend eternity with God.
Memories:
My dad loved to read aloud, and he was pretty good at it. I remember being regaled with Thurber’s “The Night the Bed Fell,” Twain’s “The Frog Jumping Contest of Calaveras County,” and Ralph Moody’s “Little Britches” series. Typically, he would read these to us right after supper. He took such pleasure in sharing his favorite poems and stories.
As a young teenager, I remember my dad crying after watching a video by James Dobson. He regretted not spending more time with my brothers and me and realized we would not be at home with him much longer. As a result, he offered to take us to the park to play. Now, we were all a little old for that, but I thought, “Hey, I’d better take what I can get while it’s being offered.” And we laughed and played at the park—climbing, sliding, chasing, and swinging. I’m glad I didn’t miss that memory.
I remember one particular summer vacation when I was a teen. My dad used some of the time with us to study through the book of Nehemiah. In a chapter on rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem, he particularly emphasized the passages that speak of people building that part of the wall next to their homes. He wanted us to understand how much more care they would have taken in making the wall strong, since a weakness at that point would have allowed the enemy to breach the wall right next to their homes.
As my dad matured, I think he understood more clearly that the Enemy was seeking to destroy his home and that prayer, Bible study, and right fellowship with his family would fortify the protection around it. He did pray for his children and grandchildren, that they would each come to know the Lord.
Growing up, I wasn’t always as understanding and respectful of my father as I should have been. Thankfully, he didn’t hold that against me, but loved me anyway, often expressing his pride in the woman I had become. I’m thankful for the many memories I have of my dad through the years, and I look forward to making many more with him when I one day join him in eternity. |

• Dec. 18, 2009 - Blessings...

Friends of ours recently lost all of their material possessions in a house fire that consumed everything, except them and their pets. It was devastating. I was blown away by the complete destructive power of fire. My heart has been so heavy for my dear friend. Nothing I could do but pray, offer clothes, and gift cards. Prayer, of course, has been most important. But my heart still breaks for them and their loss.
It's been so hard to watch them grieve but so wonderful to watch people reach out and help them. Some haven't even known them. Some have been good friends. But all have been "Jesus with feet" to my dear friend and her family.
Yesterday they got to pick up their children from their grandmother's house. I am so humbled by God working to bring this family back together for Christmas. It seems like all of life is okay just because they are now together.
I know there will be times when certain material possessions are missed, making them sad. But I also know Jesus is there to rebuild what no man can.....a family.
Join me in prayer and praise for this beautiful family God is rebuilding.
What a Christmas!
I praise you Lord Jesus!

About Me
Hi! I journey through this teaching at home path here in Fruita Colorado. I have been married to my best friend for 16 years and we desire to make this homeschooling thing a whole lifestyle not just schooling at home. My kids are 12, 11, 9, and 4. We enjoy skiing, (I enjoy the lodge), art, film making, hiking, science, working in our yard, rocks & fossils, building things and having Dad read aloud at night - anything from The Lord of The Ring to Henty to The Very Last First Time. We want to be real to our neighbors and reflect a Christian worldview and the hope we have in Christ to a needy world all around us. We don't like wash!
