A school by any other name....
I want to name our homeschool for many reasons. For one, I want my children to have an answer when someone asks "where do you go to school?" Also, I want some sense of credibility and accountability that I believe will be strengthened when our daily lessons and activities are associated with a "particular school." This may seem unneccessary, but to me, it is important. I have considered many possibilties, and I want there to be a reason and meaning behind the name we choose. I looked into the meanings of my children's names and that didn't really help. Katie means "pure" (which has possibility) but Noah means "comfort, rest" (NOT a good connotation for a school! ha ha!). So, I then started researching surnames...Thompson. What I found was astounding! I never considered this before, but the Thompson family crest and coat of arms is FULL of possibilities and themes for a name for our school. Our coat of arms colors mean generosity, strength, other symbols on the crest stand for truth, wisdom, and best of all, the Thompson name bears a shamrock, which of course represents the holy trinity or christianity! WOO HOO! I hit the jack pot for ideas for school names. And furthermore, got some pretty cool "school-like" themes, like the colors used on our crest, blue and yellow, to be our school "colors." What I like MOST OF ALL that I have found is the family motto: "Nosce teipsun", "Know Thyself." How cool is that for a motto? I would love to somehow turn that into a name for the school. So...the name search still continues, but I am excited to have the direction now!
