Back to basics

For as long as I've held a pen, I've held it wrong. I wrap my thumb around the pen instead of holding it with the end of the thumb. It's uncomfortable, and after a few minutes of writing, painful. But I've never been able to retrain myself because I don't feel like I have control the other way.

Now that D1 is scribbling away, though, I need to model a better position. So I was planning on going back to doing handwriting regularly until I was used to the proper position. I was still dreading it, though. It's so hard for me to make letters when I hold the pen correctly.

Yesterday I was helping D1 finish up her coloring paper at children's church (she gets to go when we visit our old church because Grandma teaches it). It basically just needed to be covered with large scribbles, so as I sat there, scribbling away with her, I realized that this was not so hard. I could actually do it, and enjoy it, with my hand in the right position.

So now I realize I need to go even further back. I don't need to go back to third grade, I need to go back to preschool and just practice coloring. After I do that for awhile, it shouldn't be as hard to write.

I hold my pen wrong too. I got some little soft pencil grip things for the children. It really helps them, and it helps me see how they SHOULD hold it. Otherwise it took me too long to figure it out each time.
