New school year...

It's a new school year!

And we are going through the San Diego Neighborhood Home School in California. I know most of you will object and say this is not homeschooling. You are right. Technically my children are enrolled in a publicly funded school that gives us curriculum, works with us and helps us homeschool. We go in once a month for consultations with the consultant and set a pace for the next month. But all their learning does happen at home. In that sense, it is homeschool. And it works for us.

Why do we homeschool?

There are 2 main reasons.

1. The traditional public school has let our children down. They were not learning and not being challenged. We can do a better job at home in 3 months than they did in 1 year.

2. We travel a lot since we live in 2 different states. The public school will not work with us on this. But SDNH will let us travel! We can live the lifestyle we are used to living.

So why use a charter school?

We use charters schools because we can't afford to homeschool without it. There are free/ cheap resources but I feel better knowing that we can get anything they need to learn.

I like having a "partner" in the homeschool process. Their consultant is also my friend, a parent and someone who doesn't mind if they learn at their own pace. She is creative and fun and encouraging. She makes it possible for husband and I to homeschool our children without killing each other over what we think they should do/ not do. In a way, she is our middle person bringing compassion and reality back to us! She is the person that helps us decide what is a realistic goal and what isn't. She is the support that I need that no online group can offer. And she can see if there is a problem and help fix it.

I'll be posting here hopefully weekly and hope you all will welcome me into the Homeschool Blogger community. If not, that's okay. I'll understand and still browse your blogs No hurt feelings!

I just want to know what you think and if I am still considered a homeschool blogger?

I eagerly await your responses.

IM GLAD YOU WROTE THAT. AS FOR USING A CHARTER MANY HOMESCHOLERS DO. WE USUALLY PICK ONE THAT STILL GIVES US THAT FREEDOM TO CHOOSE TO TEACH IN A WAY THATS BEST FOR OUR CHILDREN.I USE THE CHARTER CURRICUUM FOR A GUIDE, AND USE MANY OF MY OWN THINGS TO SUPPLEMENT IT. SOME OF THE THINGS WE GET I WOULD USE EVEN IF I WASNT WITH A CHARTER..I LOVE THE READING AND LIT BOOKS.YOU ARE VERY MUCH A HOMESCHOOLER. LEENA

You bet you are a homeschooler! Every homeschool family is different and looks different (thank goodness heh?) There is NOTHING wrong with how you are doing it, there is nothing wrong with having a person of support either-I know many homeschoolers who would love that! Please keep posting!
