Clammy studies

We have clams! We researched them online and found out that what we found were clams. They have a leg to help them burrow into the sand or mud and siphons for helping them breathe and eat. They eat plankton. We've found it very fascinating!

And we found they they can spit at you when you take them out of the water while they are still open. If you count the ridges on the outer shells, it will give you a good estimate of how old they are. Ours range in age from 6 years to 19 years old.

We have a camp on a pond and last year my son discovered the clams. Most people don't realize there are freshwater clams. We brought a 1/2 dozen of them home and managed to keep them alive in a fish tank for about six months.

I did NOT know that you could estimate their ages by the ridges on the shell. That is oh, so cool!

Thanks for sharing about your find. I love the shells. If you are able to save them, after the clams die or if you're able to find a whole shell where you found the clams - they are great for craft projects because of the beautiful iridescent colors inside....

Blessings!

We're making a home for them in a rubbermaid tub and now we'll have a lot of pets LOL. So far we are having fun with it. I am looking into aquariums with pebbles instead of sand. I found out they can eat fish food ground fine between your fingers. This is really exciting for us! I really want fish too. But we'll start with clams. LOL
