Reading makes a HUGE difference!
First let me preface this by saying that I understand we all learn to read at different levels. However, reading opens so many door that are closed to non-readers. I have taken reading for granted. This session of Co-op I am teaching a class for the 6&7 yr. olds about India along with another mom. It never occured to me that some of the children in the class may not be reading yet. I prepared for the class assuming that the students would be able to read. Our class has 17 students and only about 1/2 of them are reading. It made teaching a bit more difficult as the handouts I had were fill in the blank type. Map reading proved just as difficult. The coloring sheet for the flag went well. We finished class up with a game. We made sure there were readers on each team and we asked a variety of questions. All of the answers were on their handouts and maps. The readers had no problems while the others struggled. As a result the future classes will have to be watered down a bit.

It is really hard to teach a large group of children when they're at different reading levels. But what a blessing to have figured it out during the first class!
Have a fantastic Lord's Day tomorrow, my friend!

It's often difficult to parent/school a child who is a late reader too. Billy is 10 and still struggling! It drives me crazy! *lol* I was a very early reader and enjoyed it very much! How I wish he enjoyed it too!!

I teach a science class with readers and not really readers and it can be hard. I have to write all the fill in the blanks on the board for them to copy.

I recall when N was in school, there was a huge difference in reading abilities of about 24 kids. He was reading so far ahead of the rest of the class it made the gulf seem so much greater. I find it amazing that some teachers are so successful at working with such a range. I found this to be true even for D, who was grade seven. I would help out at school and a few were struggling with very simple reading and spelling. It sounds like you handled the situation really well.
