Answering 911: Life in the Hot Seat

Posted in book reviews

Answering 911: Life in the Hot Seat by Caroline Burau was a quick, interesting read that I enjoyed.  Don't read it if you don't want to read sad stories though, like the one where the guy called 911 from his cell phone and she thought he was drunk.  They got disconnected before she could figure out where he was, and she found out later that he was not drunk but going into shock.  He had fallen off a ladder and broken his leg and eventually bled to death.

The central lesson in the book is "Know where you are."  She says that she cannot believe the number of people who call 911 from their cell phones and have no clue where they are.  They cannot locate you from your cell phone!  Pay attention to what streets you are on, what stores you are in (many times I've gone to write a check and have to ask the clerk the name of the store!), and even what town you are in.

How strange (no, I don't mean your Weird List but I'll get to that!) 2 nights ago, I called 911 from my cell phone and it wouldn't go through. Then it dawned on me I'd prefer to call from our land line but by the time I got to that phone, the danger had passed (phew!) but it made me think. Next time, I'll be sure to use my land line first. Anyway, interesting Weird tag. Master in German lit - I think that's cool. Married to your stepbrother - the only thing weird about that was considering MY stepbrother as a husband - NO WAY, MAN!!! Really, God must have brought your parents together just so you could meet your future husband! You've given me an idea on where to hang that extra calendar we have :)
Glad you had a good homeschool day (I caught up with your posts, can you tell!) Each family has their own version of a good day and it's fun to read them. We are all so unique, it's weird! Take care!

We were married first, then my father married his mother and made us stepsiblings. Yes, it's weird! We like to tease each other about it.

Thanks for explaining, I can see how that would be hard to adjust to. Thanks for your comments on my post. The 911 story ... well, it was after midnight last Sun. and there were strange cars parked in front of my elderly neighbors' home and some young men were walking round the cars and my neighbors' front yard. It wasn't right, you know? My husband was working, I was scared. My gut feeling was that this was a scary situation. Just so happens the neighbor next to my elderly neighbors is a dispatch for 911 so I was hoping to get her. As I wrote, my phone didn't work and the nefarious men drove away. It seems silly now but you had to be there. Not much of a story, I'm afraid! I HATE being home alone, things like that always happen when my dh is working! I guess God wants me to rely on Him.

My two most beloved things are books and brownies! Join me here for book reviews and comments about homeschooling my 6 children still at home (ages 13 to 1). My oldest son is in college. I also muse about my own language studies and my attempts to make my children bilingual. Thanks for stopping by!
