Lots of Maybes

Posted in German with the Kinder

It may be because I am nine months pregnant.

It may be because it's really hot here.

It may be because I am really tired.

It may be because I see very little chance of providing any other German input for at least the next year.

It may be because I have a lot of other things on my mind.

It may be because this morning when Alexander said something that sounded like, "My drop" when he dropped a toy, I wanted to simply say, "Yes, you dropped it" instead of however you say that in German.

It may be because it seems harder and harder to figure out how to say anything in German.

It may be because they are 2 and 3/4 years old and still not really speaking much.

Whatever the reason, it's been really difficult to make myself speak German with the twins the last week or so.  I'm feeling quite discouraged.

I have been wondering why you are teaching them German? Are you from German background? When is the baby due?
Hang in there!

Jul. 14, 2008 - Why?

That's a good question. It started out as a way for me to practice my German and have some interaction with them. Then I started researching bilingual families and decided to try speaking German to them all the time. It has helped me improve a lot, and there is plenty of research showing that knowing another language, even passively, will help them in the future. I have been doing a bit better since I posted this. I just really wish they would speak and tell me what they want instead of me having to play 20 questions with the two of them all the time. I don't have the patience for that right now.

I am pretty sure being 9 months pregnant can wreak havoc on even the strongest of women! I don't know what to say about all that is going on with you, except that God knows your future. I pray the the Lord will give you peace and wisdom, guidance, a safe delivery and a healthy baby. Perhaps you could just think about the baby right now. Give the German a break, your twins still have a lot of time to absorb the language. Just a suggestion.

Get lots of rest, take good care of yourself. And pray. The Lord knows. And He cares. So do I!

Hugs,
Kate

Books and brownies are two things we have a lot of at our house! In this blog I'll be writing about our lives, including teaching and learning other languages, books we read and movies we watch, and of course, homeschooling our children, who range in age from 19 to newborn. Our oldest son has graduated and is off to college! We'll still be busy with the other 6 children: two older girls, and four boys 5 and under. We're glad you joined us!
