American Minute with Bill Federer

December 19th

Driven into Pennsylvania by the British, it was on this day, December 19, in the freezing winter of 1777 that the Continental Army set up camp at Valley Forge, just 25 miles from British occupied Philadelphia.

Lacking food and supplies, soldiers died at the rate of twelve per day.

Of 11,000 soldiers, 2,500 died of cold, hunger and disease.

A Committee from Congress reported "feet and legs froze till they became black, and it was often necessary to amputate them."

Soldiers were there from every State in the new union, some as young as 12, others as old as 50, and though most were white, some were Black and American Indians.

Quaker farmer Isaac Potts observed General Washington kneeling in prayer in the snow.

Hessian Major Carl Leopold Baurmeister noted that the only thing that kept the American army from disintegrating was their "spirit of liberty."

In a letter written to John Banister, Washington recorded:

"To see men without clothes to cover their nakedness, without blankets to lay on, without shoes, by which their marches might be traced by the blood from their feet...and at Christmas taking up their...quarters within a day's march of the enemy...is a mark of patience and obedience which in my opinion can scarce be paralleled."

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

Wow! What a year!  Seldom does one get to return to a ship one served on.  This year was a very special blessing 2 times.  First in December 2004 I was privileged to visit the USS Seattle AOE-3 (above) to take a tour of the ship before decommissioning in March 2005.  On the way home I visited my granddaughter in Camp Lejeune, NC and brought her and our new great-granddaughter home to Decatur.

In March 2005,  I flew to Norfolk, Va. and attended the decommissioning ceremony of the USS Seattle AOE-3 and immediately departed for Phiadelphia, PA to board the USS LaSalle LPD-3/AGF-3 for transit to Norfolk.

My good friend and shipmate on LaSalle, Lt. David Hawkins, above, went with me on the trip along with his wife Ruth.  We arrived about 5:30 p.m. along with several other former crewmembers.  It was the thrill of a lifetime to go back and visit a 41 year old ship that I had not been on board since 1969.  The sailors were all so young!  And many were females!  We missed the evening meal and found a stale bear claw and some coffee and juice to tide us over till the next morning when we enjoyed breakfast in the Wardroom with the officers of the ship.  We steamed out of Philadelphia on our way down to Norfolk and guess what, we passed the USS Seattle AOE-3 being towed to Philadelphia for retirement in the Reserve Fleet in Philadelphia.  I am probably the last Seattle crewmember to see her in the ocean.  We stayed on board that night and the next morning we entered the port of Norfolk. Boy was it cold!  We stayed overnight at Fort Story, VA at the Army base Guest Housing and the next day boarded a plane back home.

In May Dixie and I drove back to Norfolk with stops in Floyd, VA to visit with Ray and Mary Batiato former crewmember of  USS Fort Snelling LSD-30.  We stayed overnight in the “Navy Room” of their Stonewall Bed and Breakfast; click this link http://www.swva.net/stonewall in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the next day we got up early and headed for Richmond, VA where we visited the USS Roanoke AOR-7 display in the Roanoke museum.  Wow all over again! I saw the ship model and lots of memorabilia from the ship.  Pictures are on my web site http://www.aworldwide.com.  Just look around you will find the links.

While in Norfolk we stayed at the Navy Lodge and attended the decommissioning of the USS LaSalle AGF-3 with our friends David and Ruth Hawkins.  It was such a blessing to be with them again and to tour the flight deck with Dixie.  Dixie and I even got our picture in the Virginian Pilot newspaper.  Must have been Dixie or was it the green cap the Chief Engineer gave Mr. Hawkins and me that caught the eye of the photographer?

We had planned to attend a reunion of the USS Fort Snelling LSD-30 in Hawaii, but health reasons and a possible knee surgery for Dixie kept us from attending that.  We also missed the reunion of the USS Northampton CC-1 in Mobile, Alabama this year. We had planned to go to San Francisco and cruise to the Suisun Bay http://navy.memorieshop.com/BayArea/ and see the USS Roanoke AOR-7 but that too slipped by the wayside.  But, being able to go on board 2 of the 5 ships in one year isn’t too bad!

John and Karen and the kids came home from Romania and they will be with us till late spring or early summer.  They are traveling about the country seeking support for their ministry in Constanta, Romania see http://www.woodward-family.com so, you can see we have a busy house this year.  We have a big Christmas day planned with all our family here.  This will include David, Dana, Lara, Jordan and the new grandbaby Kristyn; Tim, Pam, Michelle, and Jennifer; John, Karen, Gabriel, Hannah, and Holly.  We will be missing Curtis, Lara’s husband who is on duty with the Marines in Iraq.  Please pray for Curtis and all our servicemen and women serving in the many dangerous places of the world.

I have been busy with the Gideons and Dixie has been busy china painting.  She has had the opportunity to attend several workshops this year and always enjoys them.  More are planned for the next year including one in Florida in January.

Tim continues work with SAIC in Huntsville while Pam works at Decatur Baptist church office while the girls are in school.

David pastors Crosspoint Church were we attend. Dana assists with the children’s ministry and many, many other things.  The Lord has blessed the Crosspoint ministry greatly.  http://www.crosspt.cc May He be praised and honored.  All glory is His alone.  We pray Gods blessings upon you and your family.  Have a blessed year and if you travel on I-65 and are near the Tennessee River, stop in, we are just a few miles from the I-65 river bridge.

Pray for the Peace of Israel!  Pray for the USA. God Bless America.

Have a great Christmas!

Andy
