Wednesday, April 1, 2009 Nosey Computer Neighbors
We had problems with our internet connection today. After the boys went to choir, Martin and I had dinner at church, then off to the library I went to check my email. Yes I can live without internet and be relatively happy, but I really want to check some of my emails and track a few packages.
The computer session was for 30 minutes and I was able to get everything done that I wanted in that time. It was as pleasant an experience as could be, until....another patron sat next to me. He put on the headphones, turned up the music and began to surf. More than a few times I caught his eye wandering over to my computer screen. Okay, maybe he was just jealous that I could type fast.... or maybe he was interested in the Flickr page I was looking at, or maybe he wanted to snoop into my husband Amazon account......regardless, his nosey eyes were not appreciated. Trust me I won't be checking email at the library unless it is absolutely necessary. Or better yet, during the hours when library isn't crowded -- before 2pm.

Saturday, March 28, 2009 Laughin' at Walmart
I know what a strange title for this entry. Hopefully by the end you'll understand why I was strollin' the aisles trying to not laugh out loud.
In the small city in which we live, there is this horse race. The one in the spring is where people get all decked out, have the big tents set up, bring all the tail-gate foods (and "other" beverages), are arrested for inappropriate behavior and *might* see a horse race or two, if they are lucky.
The ladies wear their newest spring dress, even if the weather is cold. Crazy if you ask me. The guys actually dress WORSE than the ladies. This is directly from my experience at Walmart today.
Picture this with me: a man (not a teenager and obviously not with any significant amount of wisdom or years on him) is wearing a PINK shirt and a YELLOW pair of pants. Then the next guy I see is wearing a BLUE shirt and a PINK pair of pants. Of course the one that was a few people behind me in check out had to cough - the hacking sounding - I'm gonna cough out a lung now cough. And does he think he's going to get better being outside in this weather - we are about ready to be drenched.
And I've already seen two pick up truck loads of "kids" going through the neighborhood on their way to the horse race.
Ya know in New York we didn't act this silly because of a horse race in the spring. Southerners!!!!!

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 Kid funnies
This was written on Tuesday, the 24th. My boys have been "taking care" of me since Monday afternoon when I became very cold and simply not well. Joshua had to miss his baseball practice because I was in bed and Martin had a meeting for the paper. Joshua wasn't happy.
I had actually forgotten it was my birthday until Caleb bounds onto the bed this morning saying to Martin, "it's Mommy's birthday today". Oh ya...guess it is....um, can't we skip today and the whole birthday thing? Please??? Remember the TV show "30 Something"? Well, I'm hard-pressed to actually remember my age, so let's just say it's a little more than "30 Something".
After Martin went to work, the boys were still "taking care" of me, when Joshua wants to know how old I am (hurry, get a calculator and I might be able to figure it out son!!). Then without waiting for my answer he declares I'm 25, then 23. Gotta love that boy. Whereas my little reminder of the birthday boy, Caleb, says that I must be 100. Um, need to work with him some more. Mommies are NEVER 100 -- trust me on this - although they may feel like 100 some days, it's NEVER EVER nice to tell them they are 100 years old.
Caleb has already put in his request for Martin to pick up some "chocolate" at Walmart for my birthday present. I'm hoping that eating chocolate will actually happen later today (and it did).
Joshua attempted to make me breakfast (yes, I was still in bed). A bowl of Cheerios with milk, a glass of milk and a bagel. The thought of all that food was, um....not appealing. I thanked him, but asked that he eat it for me. Then Caleb decides he will make me toast. He found a jar of chocolate frosting with sprinkles. Yes, I had toast with chocolate frosting and sprinkles. I attempted to share with them, but alas none wanted to share with me.
At some point Joshua says that as part of the birthday gift thing, that he wants me to have 3 boys and 2 girls. Okay, brain is a tad fuzzy, remember I was still in bed, but I don't remember being asked if that was okay with me. I guess he thought I would actually want more children as one of my birthday gifts. Then Caleb says that it would take a long time for the other children to grow up to be 7 like him. I was still trying to reconcile the "baby" times -- middle of the night feedings, diapers, spit-up.....more kids. Please understand, I'd love more children, but maybe outta diapers, please!!!
Of course the boys are continuing to be "helpful" -- well as "helpful" as they can be. They've "cleaned" the TV, mopped the floor and heaven only knows what else. There is a slightly "cleaner" scent to the house, so maybe it wasn't bad after all.
Because this wasn't posted "timely", imagine that!!!, just wanted to let you know that today is Martin's birthday. Caleb and Joshua both gave him toast with chocolate frosting. Apparently Caleb must have eaten the sprinkles as I didn't see any on the toast. Happy Birthday Martin!!!

Monday, March 9, 2009 Our kitchen mini remodel
I'm taking a moment to do a post on the kitchen remodel we did in November, right before Thanksgiving. When we moved into this house on Labor Day 2005, the kitchen counters were um, interesting. My DH seemed to like them, but I wasn't that impressed. Between the color (an ugly taupe at best) and the faux tile a previous owner attempted to do....you understand my dislike. After careful inspection I knew that the faux tile was a paint on job. Little did I know that it would be peeling off sooner rather than later. Then there was this butcher block top as part of the counter on top of the dishwasher. It was higher than the rest of the counter and frankly I very rarely used it as a cutting board. Yes it was close to the refridgerator, but not close enough to the stove. So to me it was impractical and plain ugly. I'll spare you the ugly details of the sink and faucet.
After being disgusted for the 1000th time with the paint literally coming up when wiping down the counter, we went to Lowe's. Armed with an extra section of wallpaper so that I could match up the wallpaper to the counter, we made a decision, after about two hours of looking. (Just so you know, I don't do wallpaper. I paint. After having to take down really, really ugly wallpaper at our previous house, I vowed to NEVER EVER wallpaper anywhere in my house. Because the wallpaper in the kitchen is okay, I'm not inclined to paint over it unless I absolutely have to.)
Picking out a simple thing as the color of a counter top about did me in. I definitely don't ever want to build a house and have 1000's of decisions to make about every little detail. More power to ya'll that have done it. So without further delay, here are some pictures.

The butcher block top. We actually saved this and it's very, very heavy. We have thoughts of making it into a table. We'll see if we ever accomplish that.

Can ya see the pretty (?) yellow underneath the ugly taupe?

Yup, had to put a towel down over that counter when we hand washed dishes.

Here's part of the counter demo. Thankfully the workers didn't ruin the wallpaper.

The counter and the sink are installed. Just waiting on the plumber to put in the faucet.

Such an improvement from before.

The other half of my kitchen. This picture is too light and yet the others are too dark. Yes the counters are a dark green, but they aren't black, nor as light as this picture makes them look. |

Thursday, March 5, 2009 Review: Skeeter & The Mystery of the Lost Mosquito Treasure
In the Hermie series by Max Lucado, Hermie is the caterpillar and Skeeter is the mosquito. Poor Skeeter has a very crooked stinger. Skeeter feels his crooked stinger was obviously a design "flaw" from God. Because of this crooked stinger, he has a terrible sense of direction and is always getting lost. Thankfully Hermie's friend Wormie reminds him that God made everything and God doesn't make mistakes. The story is based on Psalm 139:13-14 ...."How you made me is amazing and wonderful."
While all the others in the garden are excited about Sinclair M. Skeeto's arrival, Skeeter isn't. Sinclair M. Skeeto is Skeeter's brother. They haven't always been the best of friends because of jealousy. Skeeter always believed that Sinclair was their dad's favorite because his stinger was straight. But was that really true?
Sinclair is the brother that really enjoys adventure and his mission in the garden is a treasure hunt. Much to Sinclair's dismay, only his brother Skeeter, can help him search and find the treasure. From working together in the great treasure hunt, Skeeter learns something about his brother Sinclair that he never knew. Skeeter helps his brother Sinclair realize that God made us all different, unique and perfect in His sight.
At the end of the story, there is a little cartoon of, "Hermie Had a Little Lamb,". As a mom, I really enjoyed the trivia game because the questions helped to reinforce the story. But as an adult, some of the possible answers were just hilarious. Skeeter and Sinclair really enjoyed the Ooey Gooey Butter Cakes their father would bring home. And the recipe is included.
The only part of the Skeeter DVD that really bugged me (no pun intended), was Sinclair never seemed to apologize for being rude to Skeeter. It actually hurt my ears to listen to how rude and downright mean Sinclair was when Skeeter was trying his best to help in the great treasure hunt.
I would definitely recommend Skeeter and the Mystery of the Lost Mosquito Treasure to any family that has toddlers or early elementary kids, and I bet you parents would enjoy watching Hermie and Skeeter too. Sunday, March 1, 2009 Let's go on a nature walk
After Joshua wanting to be mailed to TN and realizing that his box busted, they wanted to go on a nature walk. Well, it was very close to lunch time, so we decided to wait for Martin.

Oh yes, they were "ready" for their nature walk. They had their bows from Boys' Club Co-Op last year. Their backpacks, pencils, and anything else they thought they could carry.

This is a birch tree we have in the front yard. As we waited for Martin, I attempted to being our "nature" walk. They weren't interested. But I've always thought a "curly birch tree" as my Daddy always called it, was very fascinating to look at.

FINALLY......let's go!!!

A birds nest in a neighbors yard.

Oh spring, wherefore art thou????

For my little rock collector. Thankfully this biggie was in a neighbors yard. What's in a neighbors yard, stays in a neighbors yard. LOL

Hey, what is this? Is this an elephant on our walk? Nope, just Dixie Grits, the dog.

Caleb was excited to find two pine cones still together on a twig. Trust me they are no longer together.

Joshua's pine cone.

Caleb also found a really interesting leaf.
And that was our nature walk. Hope you enjoyed. |

Sunday, March 1, 2009 Tennessee or Bust
Based on this title, I know there are a few friends of mine that would be in agreement -- can I get an AMEN???? I've received a number of packages lately. So lots of boxes and we all know how kids love boxes. Joshua asked me if he could use the box. Little did I know what he planned on doing with this box. This is the story of a boy who wanted to be mailed to Tennessee to see some friends that moved. I honestly can't say that I blame him for wanting to see his friends. And you know who you are, right?????

Trying out the box to make sure he fits before he gets himself mailed. LOL

He tried asking me how to spell Tennessee and I really did try to help him. But I think he didn't hear a few letters. Of course I really wanted him to be Tennessee or Bust...but he wouldn't have understood.

He was very, very determined that he WAS going to be mailed to his friends house in TN. He took his box out to the road and set himself up next to the mailbox. Thankfully it was a few hours before the mail man was to come. He thought that it would probably take only a week to arrive in TN. What you can't see is Caleb had given Joshua a book on Dinosaurs (of course) to read so he wouldn't be bored on his trip. What a brother.

Here's where the TN or BUST would be appropriate.

Okay, he's semi given up in his quest to be mailed to TN to visit his friends. He is taking the not "busted" box to the recycling container.

Now on to some bike riding.

Before we attempted to "mail" Joshua to TN by taking him to the mailbox, Caleb had used this cardboard box insert for a ship, a police car and a church. I thought this was just so very Caleb.
