The "Migraine" Eating Plan

As background, DH suffered a "migraine attack" in late June 2006. He's had a constant headache since that day without relief. The first neurologist, in my opinion, was simply a quack. He was more concerned about writing different prescriptions, than figuring out the cause and how to make his head stop hurting permanently. So on Tuesday he went to a second neurologist who doesn't appear to be too quacky -- okay, couldn't resist. He's now taking 1000 mg fish oil, a herbal migraine relief pill and we are all eating differently.


I am so thankful to Inspired for all the advice she's given (freely too, thanks!!!), websites she's sent me to and for going shopping with me on Tuesday night. Reading labels is hard work. Guess the rule of thumb is if you can't pronounce the ingredients, then it should stay in the store. I won't even go into the whole MSG issue -- I'll let Inspired do that if she wants as she is much more educated on that subject than I.


Here's a record of what we've been eating since Tuesday night. Basically the "migraine" eating plan is to eliminate yeast, yeast extract, and aged cheeses (major bummer in this house). With the education I received from Inspired, and "thinking on my feet" while preparing, it hasn't been bad. But it has made me really think about what will be prepared for the next meal, even if that meal is the next day's breakfast.


Wednesday Breakfast:

Corn grits (yellow)

nitrite free bacon (yum-o, but EXPENSIVE)

apple from produce co-op (also yumo, thanks Sharon for selecting those!!) 

huge fish oil soft gel - horse pill would be an accurate description - ugh.

Wednesday Lunch:

Husbands boss took everyone out to lunch. He had a salad with grilled chicken and dressing on the side.

Wednesday Dinner:

Linguini with cooked turkey and Farmer's Cheese

Canned carrots (mushy yucky)

Cottage cheese with homemade applesauce


Thursday Breakfast:

Corn grits (yellow)

Fried Turkey patties (ground turkey made into a patty, seasoned with garlic, onion, kosher salt, pepper and poultry seasonings)

1/2 bananna for hubby and myself

Thursday Lunch:

Hummus on matza -- yes he's "opening himself up". I think when I do hummus in the future, I'll definitely add more spices, along with with minced celery, onion, etc. But it was okay and the boys even ate it. Okay, so they were bribed with PBJ on matza after they finished their hummus.

Sliced Farmer's Cheese

Thursday Dinner:

Baked (in microwave) red potatoes (again, thank you produce co-op)

Ground turkey with mild seasonings

Brocolli that was almost past it's prime (not the one from produce co-op)

Cooked mushrooms -- next time make a lot more!!!

Shredded Farmer's Cheese (I can't tell you how happy I was that it shredded)

Real butter


Hubby and I really, really liked this meal. I didn't even miss the sour cream (hubby can't have sour cream).  Hubby has really, really been craving "sweets" since we started this eating plan. He's not a fan of oatmeal and he can't have chocolate or nuts. So he's a little on he limited side right now. I am hoping to make some Lime Melt-Aways and Lemon somethings soon. Unfortunately they have to chill for about an hour before baking....so I need to take that into consideration.


The kiddos aren't impressed with this "new way of eating", but that is the way the non-chocolate chip cookie crumbles.  I am finding that I am not eating as much as I use to. And hopefully that will be a good thing too. I've already gone through our spices and had to throw out some items. Next is the pantry (the Swanson's broth is now off limits because of the MSG), salad dressing - Ranch is his favorite, is also now off limits (MSG again).  And before his drs visit, I went on a bread baking spree. So now I need to go through the freezer and see how much bread is there and probably pass it on to someone. Now that he's now suppose to have yeast, it certainly does limit the amount of yeast breads we need to have in the house. LOL


So I thought I had already posted this -- oh well. The eating for all of us is getting better. The boys have started to come around. Of course if a box of Cheese Crackers came to the house, they'd be in heaven. And last night we saw a commercial for Zaxby's. Oh my, I was ready to run to the one down by Wal-Mart even though it was 10:30 at night.  I could simply taste those oh-so-bad-for-us-chicken strips with the Texas Toast with melted butter.....and then those fries dipped in the Zaxby's sauce, with a Sweet Tea of course. Oh my....think I might need to go there without the hubby this weekend. Anyone want to join me?
