Blessed

I have been wanting to post on here for a few weeks now and haven't found the time to do it.  I am feeling so blessed - even in the midst of rough waters. My husband found out on August 4th that he is legally blind in both eyes and can no longer drive.  At first he was not taking the news well at all.  I mentioned to him about helping me homeschool and he was so negative, "How can I do anything without being able to see?" After much prayer, he finally said one day, "I think I am going to get the kids some sketch pads and start teaching them art.  I know what I need to teach them is in my head, and I can teach them without being able to see." Talk about rejoicing!  He has adapted to his poor vision and is doing more than he thought he would ever be able to do. He can see objects but everything is blurry. He has been helping me for the past two weeks now and is doing a wonderful job - actually I think he is more into this than I am.  He teaches the kids Bible, PE and art. It amazes me what God can do.  We were approved for a 100% discount on a math program in all grades my children needed. A woman here in my town posted free homeschool books on a website and we have two tall bookshelves of books to use as well. God is good!

And we're off.....

I am so excited about homeschooling - yes a bit nervous too.  This will be different I am sure, but I am so ready for the challenge.  I figured out a tentative schedule for our school year and we are starting on Monday.  The kids like the idea of starting earlier to get more time off during the school year.  I LOVE the flexibility this offers.  Most of all, I am so thankful to God for allowing me this opportunity to have more control over what my children are learning.  We are hoping to take a trip this fall to Virginia so we can do the whole history tour in that area of the country.  I pray that works out.

This road in our lives we have been on has surely been a rough one. I have had a rough time recovering from my surgery (I am sure the fibromyalgia has played a part in that - I keep falling). I am still unable to work.  Steve was trying to go back to college so he could try to get back to work and his health took a turn for the worse.  He is losing his sight now from the diabetes and had to take a break from school.  It is strange how things work out - he is going to be helping me homeschool now, although he questions me about how he will do it without being able to see - we will make it work. I don't understand all that we are going through, but I know God has a plan.  If nothing more, it has brought us closer to each other and closer to Him. But as I am sure you know - those of you who are close to God, the devil is not far behind when trying to live your life for God.  I love the feeling of victory though when we manage to "get thee behind me Satan.." (Luke 4:8)

It's Official

I am withdrawing my kids from school tomorrow - I can't take any more of this public school.  We start tomorrow homeschooling and I am so excited.  This year will be a piece of cake since they only have 21 days left for this year (180 day calendar).  Why not just let them finish the year at school you might say?  Well after my child is tripped down the stairs, slapped in the face, juice box thrown on her and this is a matter of two days and nothing was done - I am afraid what might happen next.

Anyone there?

I am new to this blog and in the process of deciding about homeschooling.  I don't like some of the things that my children are learning in public school and wish to teach them at home.  Here is our dilemma:  My family does not have the money for a curriculum and wondered if anyone knows of any free or very reasonable priced curriculum?  I am strongly considering pulling my children out and finishing the rest of the year at home, then trying a curriculum for next year (they will be 6, 7, 8th grade).  Anyone that might offer some advice out there?
