Earth Day 2008!

April 22nd is Earth Day!!!!! Although this may be similar to a Conservation 101 post it is actually apart of my new Organic Living Sessions. I will be explaining that in a later post but as for now here are some things to do to GO GREEN for Earth day! ( I shall be wearing my 'Plant a Tree, Save the World' t-shirt)
#1. Get Rid of Plastic Bags!
Me and My Mother have bought these reusable canvas bags to tote around in Safeway and when going to the check out we use those reusable canvas bags instead of plastic bags. Here are the reasons why Plastic bags are harmful to our Earth.
*The Raw material of plastic bags is oil. Therefore, the more we use plastic bags the more we waste oil- a non renewable energy source.
*The petroleum-based bags take decades to break down, so if they are not recycled they are litter. It creates visual pollution: On the streets, on the beaches, etc,
* Plastic bags CAN be recycled but it rarely happens. according to the US Environmental Protection Agency, only 1% of plastic bags were recycled in 2000.
* Most importantly, they are harmful to wildlife, particularly sea life, such as sea turtles and dolphins, which can die of entanglement, suffocation, and ingestion.
Basically reusing plastic bags and or recycling them can help cut down on pollution. Using canvas bags are the best, and they are cheap!!!!!
#2. Plant a Tree (Sound familiar?)
I believe I have covered this before in a post so let me refer you back to that.
** *World Conservation**
"**Help to settle out, trap and hold particle pollutants (dust, ash, pollen and smoke) that can damage human lungs.
**Absorb CO2 and other dangerous gasses and, in turn, replenish the atmosphere with oxygen.
**Produce enough oxygen on each acre for 18 people every day.
**Absorb enough CO2 on each acre, over a year's time, to equal the amount you produce when you drive your car 26,000 miles.
**Trees remove gaseous pollutants by absorbing them through the pores in the leaf surface. Particulates are trapped and filtered by leaves, stems and twigs, and washed to the ground by rainfall."
#3. Educate children! (I think this is a crucial thing to do)
*Teach them to respect wildlife and plants. That way as they grow up they will have a love for animals and a love for trees and will be touched by that.
* Build a birdhouse (I am working on that myself to do with Brandon)
** Build a Birdhouse **
*Make a basket from an old orange juice carton
** Orange Juice Basket **
* Make a skirt from old umbrellas (MY FAVORITE!)
** Umbrella Skirt **
#4. Get children to recycle their old toys and games.
*By giving their old toys and games to younger children who could make use of them, older children learn two lessons: One is about giving to others and the second is about reusing and recycling instead of throwing things away. Adults can also do this with clothes, electrical items, books and more. Learn about product exchange communities like Freecycle and other alternatives.
#5. Wear green and/or brown.
*Dress in environmental colors for the day; think "tree"! Wear badges if you have them that carry pithy summaries of your environmental views ( I will be wearing my 'Plant a Tree, Save the World' t-shirt)
But of course the last tip of this post
**Remember: Every day is Earth Day.
*Anything to help our environment is a perfect thing to do on Earth Day and every day. Don't restrict yourself to just one day a year; learn about how you can make a difference to environmental protection all the time. And put it into practice - every day!
