Me and My chickens
Aug. 8, 2008 - kitten
hello all,
I got a new kitten it is black and white and we call it Sylvester.
I got it a while ago and I loved it but it has turned evil it is biting every one it scratches. it is a vary evil kitten but it killed a mouse so it must be usefull, I hope. it lives in the chicken barn( my mom is alergic to cats ) it chases a chicken or two every onece in a while but the dog loves the cat and the cat hates the dog, big problem. My dog has to stay on a chain and run around in a little space. He is not to be trusted

Jun. 25, 2008 - john ball zoo
Hello,
I am so sorry for not bloging but I wanted to tell every one of my amazing trip to the zoo.
Well it all started like this me my mom and my brothers and sister went to the zoo with our friends and the first animal we saw was the flamingos, yes, the flamingos made a um, unique smell. So we went to look at some other animals then is my favorite the aquarium it was so cool! It had penguins, tons of fish, all kinds of underwater plants and more! After that we kept going and there were all kinds of animals such as a bear, a warthog, all kinds of frogs, goats you could pet, camel rides (we defiantly did not ride the camels 10 dollars to go on a little trail). They had chickens running around and a ton more. I must say one of the best zoo’s ever!

And here is my funny brother looking at a
chameleon.

Sep. 14, 2007 - A tribute to Buttercup
My Buttercup chicken started her life with us as she came to us in a box in the mail from the hatchery. She looked like a little bandit. Buttercups have a black stripe by their eyes making them look like robbers. The rest of them is fluffy yellow with a little black. She was so cute!
As she started to grow she had a Buttercup rooster partner but he mysteriously died one day. He was a pretty rooster. I think he would have done well at fair had he lived to go.

We took her to fair as a pullet (this means she’s less than 1 year old.) By this time she had matured and looked like a grown-up Buttercup. This picture of her is at that fair. She got an honorable mention. An honorable mention means there was tough competition and she might have done better if there were not as many good birds that year. I hung a sign on her cage saying her name was “cute eyes”. I also sometimes called her “butter-butt” sometimes.
After we got her home from fair she started flying out of the pen. She was the only one who did this but she never went far. She liked to stay by the other chickens.
Then, this last June we had a terrible dog attack. We lost 17 or 18 chickens and Buttercup was injured. First, she was missing but she came back late that night. She only had one tail feather left (out of 10) and had bite marks on her skin. She probably had an internal injury because she was spitting blood. We didn’t know if she’d make it but she did!
All her feathers grew back and we nursed her back to health. She seemed very freaked out most of the time. It really changed her personality. She never jumped out again. We had to keep her separate from the other chickens for awhile. Even after she was better she was still scared of them. It’s just been about the last month that she was finally able to be with the other ones.
Yesterday, when I went to open my chickens I saw her wings hanging down and I got a little suspicious. In the afternoon, we found her sick with head hanging down. We tried to get her to drink but she would rather not. We put her down for a few minutes and came back and she had died.
I felt terrible. My mom said probably their was something internal wrong that we couldn’t see from the dog attack. I will miss her so much.
I had a lot of fun with her. I’m sad she left. I think she had a good life (except for the dog attack) with us.

Aug. 28, 2007 - fair!!!
This year I was going to fair of course I show chickens. My brother got 6th for showing the bird and 2nd for showmanship. My sister got 5th for showmanship and my other brother got 3rd for showing his chicken. I got 1st place and champion for my bird, now I like to say her name is champion or number 1!

Showmanship is where you tell the judge about the parts of your chicken. She asks you a lot of questions and they see who knows the most.
When you show your bird the judge is looking for how nice your bird looks and if it's molting or not. Molting is when they lose their feathers to get new ones. They usually do this once or twice a year.
I also got 3 corn dogs! They were really good but… now I cannot have any now that fair is done . We did not go on one ride (because they were not free .)
We also went to the demo derby at fair. That is where cars they get from the junk yard go crashing into each other. This is the first time I've been to one. They were throwing things into the stands between rounds and someone around me caught a toy and gave it to me. It was a hairy eyeball creature that lights up. It's red and blue when it lights up. They also did a mini derby with smaller cars. The derby was very, very, very loud. One car set on fire but the firefighters put it out.
My mom worked in a stand at the commercial building. I got to go and collect all the free things like water, candies and balloon animals while she was working there.
I hope you get to go to a fair. If you did tell me about what you did at fair .

Jul. 14, 2007 - My study (small study) on chickens part 2
Today I am going to talk about eggs. You know about eggs, don’t you? Chickens can lay brown, white, but you may not know… they can lay green eggs! ! It’s so much fun to find green eggs in the nest box! Although…it is still fun to find an egg no matter what color it is.
Chickens can lay up to an egg every day! A good layer could lay 360 per year! |
