Deus Caritas Est

My wise 10 year old
| Today I had one of those amazing moments today, that let you know all the hard work is worth it. Today, during lunch Andrew (4) told Jack (10) that there was a huge scoop of taco salad left in the bowl for him. I know this seems like a benign comment, but when Jack found out it wasn't true, he got very angry for some reason, and told Andrew he was a liar. Andrew was upset, as was I, and I immediately scolded Jack for his unkind words. I told him that people's perceptions are sometimes different and that while it may look small to Jack, it obviously seemed like more to Andrew. After he apologized, I sent him upstairs to write "I will not call my brother a liar" 25 times, and look up, and copy, a Bible verse in Proverbs (17:27) about our words and wisdom. When he was done, he came downstairs, walked in while I was cleaning the kitchen, and said, "Thank you." I asked him what for, and he said, "For disciplining me. If you didn't discipline me, I would turn into a horrible brat, and I don't want to, so thank you." I told him that at that moment he was wise beyond his years. I felt so thankful that the Holy Spirit had moved in him and helped him to come to that realization. It really reinforced in me the need to combine discipline with instruction from God's word because it will truly change their hearts. |
