Nov. 8, 2005 - Yippie! I get to do an e-Newsletter!
I am so blessed! TOS has been so much fun for me. I get to talk to interesting people and look at great products. Now Gena says I can do an e-Newsletter! Yippie! It's going to be for parents of special learners. That can mean a learning disability, or ADHD, or a different learning style. We want to equip you, the parent/teacher of that special learner, with encouragement to do the job the Lord has given you.
So, what would you like to see? Are there experts out there you'd like to see interviewed? Is there a product or program you're dying to learn about? Is there a problem you're dealing with that you'd like to see discussed? Let me know your thoughts and wishes. We want to help you to know without a doubt that YOU CAN TEACH YOUR SPECIAL LEARNER!

This is wonderful a lot of people will really be able to use all your wonderful ideas on Special Needs including my family, I have a daughter who is almost 11 who is slowly losing her hearing in both ears the doctors expect her to be completely deafby the time she is 20, we just found this out in June, I have no idea where to get support or anything about this particular disability.
I think it is wonderful how much time and all the great resources TOS has , thank you so much for having such caring hearts.

It is a much needed resource, as I know many moms who are homeschooling special needs children. Or as I have heard along the way, "children with special abilities."
My 2nd born has been classified as ADHD. We have tried all sorts of methods to help him deal with his distractibility and difficulty focusing. We have tried dietary changes; we have tried treating him for an over-abundance of yeast in his body from too many antibiotics as a small child; we have tried occupational therapy at our cost; we did 6 months of vision therapy; and finally we had to resort to medication, because he could not keep his eyes still enough to be able to read. At the time, the vision therapist even supported trying this. So we go through cycles of medication, and we go through long periods without medication. I hope one day we start on a long cycle off of it and never have to go back to using it.
Some books I have read that have helped are:
"How to Get Your Child off the Refrigerator and on to Learning" by Carol Barnier
"Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World: Unlocking the Potential of your ADD Child" by Jeffrey Freed, M.A.T. and Laurie Parsons
"Smart Moves: Why Learning is Not All in Your Head" by Carla Hannaford, PhD
"Endangered Minds: Why Children Don't Think---And What We Can Do About It" by Jane M. Healy, PhD
Have a blessed day! Tami
PS Some of these I can special order through my company now, if anyone wants a copy.
Nov. 11, 2005 - OOPS! I missed one more book on my shelf that was very helpful....

"Homeschooling the Challenging Child" by Christine Field
This was VERY helpful, I left bookmarks on special sections that I want to re-read as often as I can!
Thanks, Christine!

I just signed up. My 4 yr old has Asperger Syndrome, something that causes most to think we're crazy for homeschooling (the "if his issues are social, why would you keep him home??")

Thanks so much for starting this newsletter - I am looking forward to it! I have a 11yo son with brain damage, who functions at roughly a 4yo level in all areas except for speech, which is around a 2yo level. I love to read more about homeschooling special needs kiddos - makes me feel a *little* more competent!

Nov. 14, 2005 - RIght now...I am struggling with reading....

I have an autistic dd and reading is a struggle with her as she is a gestalt learner (whole to parts). Also I have a son who may be dyslexia with writing and reading. He is reading but not well enough and he does switch letters around and sometimes reads backwards (my dh has this problem but he was never diagnosed). Another thing my autistic dd writes backwards all the time. I would like to see these issues discussed. As well as dysgraphia issues too.

I would like to know more about how to help my dd (autistic) who has brain damage (as a result of her birth trauma). This brain damage affects the area of learning, thinking and motor skills (both gross and fine). She is also unofficially diagnosed with ADHD by her neurologist. How do you teach a child who will struggle with learning and thinking because of the brain damage? I can't find any resources on this issue. There is alot of resources on Autism and ADHD.

We are homeschooling our 3 children and our middle child, only 5, has ADHD along with oppositional defiance disorder. We are so lost in this maze of doctors, medications (or not?), behavior strategies, curriculum, and oh yes, homeschooling two other children plus being a loving wife and good homemaker. I am finding the constant battle for his obedience and attention 24/7 very tiring. In addition, as most families with ADHD know, you usually have a spouse with this condition as well!! I would love to hear how other families can distinguish between just plain ol' sin nature and behavior caused by ADHD? I would love to hear from Christian experts on ADHD and their view on this condition. We have to see a child psychiatrist now--do you know of any Christian ones that give advice for parents of children with ADHD/mood disorder? I would also love to see more articles written by Carol Barnier. I have read her books and subscribe to her email loop but much of the information is review. Can't wait for this to begin!
