I protest Christmas in August!

posted Tuesday, August 29, 2006 :: 8:13 AM

School hasn't even started yet, and some stores are already into the Christmas spirit ... of raking in as much cash on the name of Jesus as possible between now and December 25th. I was shocked last year when I saw the Christmas decorations out in JC Penney the week after Labor Day; now it seems Labor Day is too late a start.

Last year my dh and I protested the crass commercialization of Christmas by refusing to spend money at retailers for Christmas presents. I started blogging about non- commercial Christmas ideas at my other blog, this side of heaven. One of my goals was to learn hand book binding this year so that I could make books to give to family.

Ah, well, this year turned out to be too busy, too many big life events for that. But we will still protest the crass commercialization of Christmas by refusing to spend money at retailers for Christmas presents this year as well. Things will settle down a bit and I can start blogging about non- commercial Christmas ideas again; and get out my hand book binding books, and start to read them; and get out my quilts in progress, which have been packed away for most of this year. :)

Isn't it interesting that they have no problem selling "Christmas" merchandise in September, but they don't want to give credit to the original birthday boy, Jesus "Christ." Hence, the generic holiday terms like holiday trees.

I totally agree

I also protest going straight from Halloween (a holiday I don't celebrate) to Christmas, with very little if any Thanksgiving items for sale. On the plus side, just like the clothing seasons, everything is on sale when I'm ready to purchase.

Love your blog and your books, Christine!

Putting the "holy" back into holidays ...

Thank you for the kind comments! Retailers will keep pushing the envelope on Christmas until fully half the year is devoted to purchasing for it; unless we the public refuse to spend our money, and insist due reverence be paid to Jesus Christ, and His worship not be made an opportunity for greed. Jesus did clear the money lenders out of the Temple.

I am researching the holy days which were instituted by God as a celebration of the Messiah, instead of celebrating the holy days which were instituted by man to honor nature in place of nature's God.
