a little perspective

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path."
Psalm 119:105

Is anyone surprised that God is true to His word?

Previously: Florida, the hurricane- free state

Original post posted on October 22, 2007. Scroll down for updates.

Way back in June, I predicted a no hurricane season for Florida this year. Now I am not a meteorologist, so why am I predicting hurricane activity in a very hurricane- prone state? The governor of Florida went out of his way to bless Israel with economic partnerships (that would in turn also bless Florida), he divested the state's investments from the enemies of Israel which had been threatening her, and he also prayed at the Western Wall, acknowledging the God of Israel as the Lord of storms, and asked for His protection for Florida this year from hurricanes.

Based on the governor's actions and attitude (acknowledgment of the Lord, and humility), I predicted grace for Florida, because of the word of God, and not meteorology. This trip of the governor's was not even a week after the experts predicted an above average hurricane season for the Atlantic this summer. The exact quote: "The bottom line: expect an active Atlantic hurricane season." Well, I thought the word of God would prevail over the word of man. The hurricane season runs from June through November, so now that we have six weeks to go, where are we?

From the Central Florida Hurricane Center:

"Nothing imminent, no model hints of development, and just a general lack of activity mark the mid to late October 2007 hurricane season. The only thing even worth looking at right now is the wave in the Central Atlantic, which will likely get ripped apart by shear in the near future.

"This season has been filled with shear, and two extreme hurricanes that went into Central America and Mexico. One last minute hurricane, Humberto, hit the US. Only one storm affected Florida, Barry, back in the first part of June, and that was a minor Tropical Storm.

"There is possibility for more development before the end of the season, so it is important to remain vigilant, but the likelihood of anything major happening now is extremely low for the remainder of this year.

"In short, there is not much going on, so enjoy the rest of October!"

So far, the word of God has prevailed over the word of man. I certainly don't expect that to change now. We will check back in on Florida at the end of November.

Update: In related news, now scientists are working on ways to change the intensity and course of hurricanes, possibly diverting them from metropolitan and population centers to smaller towns. While no one wants a hurricane to hit and cause damage, sending the damage to a small town when it wouldn't have otherwise been hit really isn't right, either. What a mess we make for ourselves when we decide to take on the decisions only God has the wisdom to make.

10/30/07 Update: When I saw the headline, Noel expected to become cat. 1 hurricane near south Fla., I thought, "A hurricane in Florida! This year? How can that be possible?" But then I read the article. Here are the relevant parts:

"Noel is going to make its closest approach to Florida during the day Wednesday," Local 6 meteorologist Larry Mowry said. "At (the storm's) closest approached to Florida, it could be just 50 miles offshore of Miami."

"Just how close it gets to South Florida will all be determined by how fast a cold front picks up the storm and lifts it to the north and to the east," Mowry said. "At this point, it does not appear it will come on shore."

Most of the winds were expected to stay on the north and east side of the storm and away from Florida.

Okay, so we will just have to watch the storm today and see what happens. I am still going with the word of God.

10/30/07 evening Update: the map tracking the hurricane shows it completely missed Florida today. Completely. God's word still wins out.

Tropical Storm Barry

posted Monday, November 5, 2007 :: 6:06 AM :: by Anonymous
And if I recall, the TS that did come ashore in the Tampa area brought drenching rain to an area that was desperate for moisture. So not only did the Lord spare a destructive force, He allowed a small storm to refresh and rejuvenate Florida, saving it from a drought and keeping fresh water plentiful for His people.

Makes me think the Governor of GA better be getting himself to the Western Wall and boosting the state pension fund into Israeli stocks.......MrsBurns
