Fourth Week of Five in a Row:)

Posted in School

Well, this week in our studies, using FIAR, we did Mirette on the High Wire.  It was not my favorite book when we started out, although the illustrations are fantastic.  But, I came to like it a little better and my littles like it pretty well, now, too.

Here's what we did:

Lang. Arts:  learned about compound words and did the worksheet here. Our spelling list for this week:  afraid, wire, high, fear, line, years, circus, salute. Vocabulary that we (inadvertantly) learned:  omelette, salute, boardinghouse (compound word).

Geography:  used the story disk to locate France and refresh ourselves on some things we already studied about France.

Social Studies:  Arts/Talents/Abilities - discussed special interests and how practice is also necessary to become proficient at things.  Dd mentioned that she would like to learn to sew.  Also, Occupations:  we read "Things People Do" (Usborne).

Character/Bible:  We use "Leading Little Ones to God", but the character trait for this that we focused on was encouragement.  I believe it is soo important to be encouragement for one another.

Art:  We made posters announcing an event.

Science:  PE:  we pretended to walk a wire (using string), casting our eyes straight ahead, and keeping one foot directly in front of the other:)  It was cute watching all of them line up to do it.:)

We also investigated copper (metal).  We found pics of things that are copper, and mentioned oxidation.  Polishing a penny helped demonstrate that.  Also, mentioning that the Statue of Liberty is made of copper and was given to our country from......FRANCE!!!! neat!!

Extra credit:  We served omelettes and crepes one night for dinner and french toast for breakfast one day!

To top it all off, we lapbooked it all!!!  It turned out to be a great week of FIAR for us.

1st week of school!!!

Posted in School

Well, it was our first week of school this week.  It went well, all things considered.  The curriculum we use, Five in a Row, is based on children's literature.  And, our first book of the year is How to Bake and Apple Pie and See the World.  We learned quite a lot for just one week.  We pantomimed , learned about measures, hit briefly on subtraction, began an evaporation experiment, and yes, we did bake an apple pie - from scratch!!!  The pics prove it!!  Hopefully, I can post our lapbook pics later!

I have several other resources ordered and quite a few "ideas" floating around...but this is the skeleton of my plan.  We have had a great time with FIAR this year and do not intend to fix what ain't broke.  Although, I am thinking of incorporating lapbooking!  We'll see.  We've done a few this year but I hope to do more next year.

We are keeping up with our homeschool support group as well, we really enjoy it.

Can't wait to get started!!  I need to go plan!!
