Taking care of me today...

Posted in Daily Ramblings

Today I made time for myself.  Kariss and I went to the dentist.  I love going to the dentist.  It's an opportunity for me to sit and do nothing...and have a good reason for it.  My daughter hates the whole scraping thing.  Oh well...it must be done.

PTL...no cavities!

When I was little, I used to WANT to get cavities b/c then, when I got them filled, I'd be able to inhale that "laughing gas" and get a legitimate high.  Isn't that a mess!

Now that I'm grown up. I don't want to PAY for cavities.

Afterwards, we took advantage of a littles-free day to head to Target.  I bought another bin for some organizing I've been doing of the boys things.  From infant to 3T, all clothes that currently don't fit my boys have been in an unorganized mess.  I straightened that out today.

After Target, we went and had a mother/daughter lunch (with no littles!) at Cheddars.  Our lunch included a business meeting over schoolwork and a slight review of upcoming work.

Dropped Kariss to coop and I then went to the eye doctor.  I hadn't been in five years.  In 1991, I had lasik surgery done and saw 20/20.  That's my excuse for not going back for awhile.  Poor excuse I know.  Anywho...I still see 20/20 (20/15 out of one eye) so I'm happy!  I had worn glasses since the 3rd grade so I'm glad to be in the land of the seeing!

Stopped by to see my sister (something I really get to do by myself) and then made my way home to finish my organizational project and start dinner.

Tonight I cooked Shake-N-Bake Chicken with corn on the cob and lima beans.  This is a family favorite.  I LOVE the site where this recipe comes from Hillybilly Housewife.  This lady has AWESOME recipes as well as wonderful tips and tricks for the kitchen.  In addition, many of her recipes are budget friendly.

My husband kept an eye on the boys for awhile while my hands were covered with raw chicken gook.  Tre' LOVES working on this wooden (and inexpensive, I might add), toy train set from IKEA...

Then he went upstairs to finish some work stuff.  My 3yo stayed busy w/one of his puzzles.  I put my 20 mth old in the high chair, pulled him close to me and let him do a puzzle too.  I think this is about the age that we started teaching Tre' about puzzles too.  Melissa & Doug puzzles are great!

Packed up a dinner for my oldest and left home quickly to then pick up Kariss from coop and take her to Volleyball tryouts.  Got home at 9:30.

Long day but a good day.  Wonderful time meeting some of my own needs :)

Still working on getting unpacked :)

Coming home after travelling

Posted in Daily Ramblings

This is always the worst for me.  If I choose to unpack the same day, I'm exhausted and burnt out the next morning.  If I choose to leave it until the next day, it drags out for the next two weeks.

Last night, I decided to leave it.  We designated our piano room as the room for all the suitcases.  I have decided to cancel school for today so that the focus today can be on getting everything in it's place.  My daughter is a great help and this counts for homeschool - home ec:  organization skills.  I intend to spend naptime conferencing with her about last week's work and discussing what we will do for the rest of the week.  I think that I'll make some hot chocolate, buy some whip cream and have that conversation with her on the couch sharing a blanket.

It is a windy day here and quite chilly.  Basically, it's a day to be at home.

I intend to let the boys relax...run around all day in comfie clothes and play with all the toys they miss :)

One day I'll be the great organizational queen, but for today, I just want to slowly ramp back into motherhood, and housekeeper.

Ronald McDonald House = Amazing.

Posted in Daily Ramblings

I am floored at the awesome place we are able to stay at while we are in Philly.  I was a little eerie at first of staying in a place where there are multiple people sharing common areas.  I was afraid that I would be dying for privacy and tired of talking to folks.

Just the opposite.

This place is amazing.  There are twenty rooms to house twenty families and the place is full today.  There is a large kitchen with a large dining room to eat in.  In the kitchen there are like six refrigerators.  Two are "house" refrigerators that anyone can raid and eat out of.  The others are floor specific where we can store "our" food.  There are two large islands that have all the sweets you could every want.  Talk about midnight snacks AND not doing well with eating healthy :(

Dinner is provided most every night by different people or organizations.  Tonight, I type with my plate next to the computer filled with Roast, Veggies, Fruit Salad, and a green salad.  All I have to say is I didn't have to cook.

The generousity of people who I will never know and never meet has floored me.  Tonight's dinner was provided by a high school class and their teachers.  They came not with the food in hand but with the ingredients to cook the meal in the kitchen.

There are three common areas - all outfitted with TVs, VCRs, and DVD players.  Children's movies are in abundance.

In the downstairs children's area, there is a playroom with every toy known to man.

I'm actually typing while my 3yo plays with his new friends.  Kids are funny that way.  They are friendly with any and everyone.  He is riding around and around the playroom, hallway, etc on a tricyle.  He and another little boy are behind the other little boy on "wheels".  His wheelchair is not slowing him down one bit.

Here is Jessie...giving Tre' a lesson in riding.

A massage therapist just showed up to give free chair massages for stressed out parents and caregivers.  I'm about to go and get me one.

...OK...I'm back.  The massage was great!  And Tre' got a back rub too.  The massage therapist shows up once a month to share her gift and talent with parents and kids in great need of some stress relief.  How wonderful.

I've also had the great opportunity of getting to know parents from all over the country who have come here to stay while their children get the care they need.  Some families are here for the week; others are have been here for months.  It is so good to talk to parents whose kids have challenges of one kind of another.

Also, it's good to see other kids who look like Kanaan.  I had never heard of Brachial Plexus Injury before Kanaan was born.  Since, he was born, I have yet to see another kid like him.  Being with others who "get it" is a neat experience.

In a weird sort of way, this is a mini-vacation.  My children are happy and busy so I'm free to relax and watch TV, read a book, or....blog :)  All is well in the world.  Funny that it takes the Ronald McDonald House to give me a vacation.

Alright...too much time spent on this blog posting pictures and such.  I'm off to update Kanaan's Online Journal with more detailed info about his day.

Blogging from Philly...

Posted in Daily Ramblings

This week I'll be blogging from Philly.  My baby son has an MRI tomorrow at the Shriners hospital here.  He is scheduled to have surgery next Monday.  You can read more about what's going on with him HERE

We are staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Camden, NJ - right across the bridge from Philadelphia.  Due to all my preparations for leaving town my blogging has not been consistent but I hope to get with it again this week.  I plan on finishing my thoughts on School at the Arboretum soon.  I've already uploaded new photos...now I just have to add commentary.  Thank you Jesus for wireless internet at the Ronald McDonald House!

This week is going to be difficult for me on food and exercise.  I think I'm gonna let myself off the hook and just do my best b/c it is definitely not going to be perfect.  I truly feel for people who travel for their jobs.  It's so hard to be in control of your food choices when you are not surrounded by good choices.

I've located a couple of gyms in the area.  My 24 Hour Fitness membership allows me to participate in a passport program from www.healthclubs.com.  Many of the clubs are free to me or available at a minimal cost.  Finding the time to work out is going to be the issue.

The Ronald McDonald House is awesome.  I'll take some pics of the inside of the house later but for now, here's the front. It's not in the best neighborhood so my idea of taking my boys out in the double stroller and walking is not gonna fly.

Here's picture of one of the living areas in the RM house

The kitchen here is STOCKED.  If you never wanted to eat out, you wouldn't have to.  But...it's stocked with all the WRONG things.  Carbs, carbs, carbs.  Businesses, groups, and individuals volunteer to bring food daily.  There is cake, cheesecake, cookies, brownies, etc....EVERYWHERE.

Pray for ME!!!

Walking...Weird or Normal?

Posted in Daily Ramblings

Tonight for exercise and for fun, my kiddos and I walked to Wal-Mart.  We needed the exercise, fresh air, and some stuff from the store.  It was a 30 minute walk there and then another 30 minutes back.  My  littles were in the double stroller and Kariss and I took turns pushing it.

We've done it before.  Tonight though I felt a little different.  It just dawned on me that NOBODY was walking on the sidewalk of our residential neighborhood.  You would think with a grocery store on the corner you would see lots of folks taking advantage of a beautiful Texas fall evening - not so...

Growing up, especially during the summers, we walked up the street to the library or down the other major cross-street to go to McDonalds and eat it on the way back :)  People just don't do that anymore...the walk I mean.

I found myself being self-conscious and wondering if the people driving past us in their cars thought that our car was "broke-down" or that we didn't have any gas money.

Truth is...it was a nice way to spend time with my family.   The boys had a ball (they LOVE going to the store) and we got some great exercise (Wal-mart is down the hill which means coming home is UP the hill).

Earlier this week, we took a walk before dinner.  Our neighborhood has a beautiful creek trail.  No one else was walking that either.  Maybe we are just weird.

Halloween or Harvest...

Posted in Daily Ramblings

I'm plagued again this year by the same battle I have every year.  Should we do Halloween?  I've read all the commentaries and I've heard all the debates but I'm still not sure.

Now, there are so many things to do INSTEAD of Halloween.  We have a harvest festival at our church every year (called Hallowed Be Thy Name) and the kids have a great time.  They would never know they were missing anything.  We can even dress up for this event if we choose.

Right now, the issue is I do the church activity and just don't deal with my position on Halloween.  I don't have to.  My kids aren't asking to trick-or-treat....so we don't....less for me to worry about.  I mean...goodness...my kiddos have never even done the costume thing :)

But...because I'm me...I feel like I ought to have a position.  I don't have one yet.  While some dogmatically say that Halloween is a pagan holiday and we shouldn't participate, others say that it can still be enjoyed by the kiddos w/o having to delve into the depths of the theology behind it.

My dilemma, if we don't do Halloween, then what's next...Christmas?...That's another discussion :).

For now, we don't do "Halloween" in it's more traditional form, but it's more right now out of laziness than principal.  I hope to "get into" the season next year and enjoy the celebration of harvest time by buying a couple of pumpkins and making pumpkin bread, decorating my house in the spirit of the fall season, and creating some traditions for my kiddos.  Hopefully they will learn to appreciate the season for the season and I'll never have to come up with a position.

I'm been away...and it's India's fault!

Posted in Daily Ramblings

My husband was able to get tickets to the India Arie concert for this past Tuesday night.  I gathered up the ladies in my family and we all attended.  This girl is great.  Nice, decent, folksy kind of stuff.  She's a true musician, talented singer, and entertainer.

Now, I try to be spontaneous and I want to be spontaneous but the fact of the matter is, my life at home works because of ROUTINE!!!  When I jump outside of my routine, it takes me a second to get it back together.  Posting on my blog has had to take a back seat to catching up on dirty dishes, grading schoolwork, folding clothes, etc.

My 14yo usually will carry the weight but she went with me so...things at home came to a stand still :)

Anytime I try to go anywhere or do anything special it requires a LOT of work on the front end.  It kind of makes it easier just to stay at home.  But I went anyway...and had a GREAT time.

Before I left I cooked Chicken Curry ( my mother is from Guyana - a West Indian culture).  I fixed enough for my family, my grandmother, aunt, cousin, and a friend who just had a baby.  I felt like SHE-WOMAN!!!  Maybe I'll post the recipe when I figure out the measurements.  Right now...I "dump" cook this dish.

Then I got home at midnight...had to put the food away and make up the bed (I washed sheets earlier in the day).  THEN...I had to get up at 5am....WHEW!!!

So...needless to say...I haven't blogged in a couple of days.  I'll try to get back with it.

Alrighty...it's late

Posted in Daily Ramblings

and I'm trying to be more disciplined about getting in the bed at a decent hour so...today being my long day and all...plus the fact that I just did a long post on my other blog...I'm just gonna call it a night.

I'll have more to say tomorrow...

Side note:  I'm so sad...my digital camera is broken...and just when I was getting the hang of blogging with pictures.  It will be for 3-4 weeks...So I'll be pictureless during that time :(....hmmm...maybe I can resurrect some old photos :)

On Procrastination

Posted in Daily Ramblings

As I am blogging frequently these days, I have become a connoisseur of blogs in a sense.  I found this entry on a day last week when I was accused of being a procrastinator.  I viciously denied it  and then stumbled upon this post.  Talk about being humbled :)

Katrina from Callapidder Days has graciously let me share her post on the 7 Phases of Procrastination.

GET READY TO BE CONVICTED!

I chose to link to Katrina's post tonight (Sunday night) so that I can stop procrastinating and get ready for the week ahead!...instead of blogging for an hour :)

A Lethargic Day

Posted in Daily Ramblings

OK...getting caught up...this is for Thursday, Oct 12th.

Compared to yesterday, today was a flop.  The littles ran around playing aimlessly but having a great time while I sat on the couch, watching them.  This is probably as a result of my lack of sleep the past weekend.

They kids had fun, amazingly enough.  We ended up putting the cushions from the couch (our old one in the gameroom) and letting them jump for awhile and then...even with the TV/Video on, they got board and meandered into the room to play with their toys, then on to puzzles, then on the outdoors...

My oldest has coop on Thursdays and is gone from 12pm - 7pm.  Afterwards, I picked her up and we headed to 24 Hour Fitness for her P.E. and my daily cardio workout.  We go to a dance class.  I didn't attack it with much energy but at least I did something.  My daughter had a great time.  She loves the dancing and the music.

It was nice to know that even in my funk, fatigue, and floppation (is that a word?) that my kiddos still had a good day.

I need a swig of that coffee in the upper-left hand corner...

Posted in Daily Ramblings

It's been a rough  couple of days.  The last couple of nights I've had a total of 2 hours sleep (1 whole hour each night).  It's 1am now and my boys will be up at 7:30am waiting on me to fix breakfast.

Why you ask have I had no sleep...Here's the quick chronicle...

Friday night - finished taking out braids

Saturday night - attempt to wash my hair in prep for Sunday BUT...forgot to comb out first...this means...TANGLED HAIR!!!  I was untangling my hair and trying to comb out my hair for FOUR HOURS...took a brief nap...got up and started getting the kiddos ready for church.

Sunday night - trying to get caught up around the house from last week.  Somebody forgot to tell me that if I take a break from my routine (house and kids) and my hubby has the kids...it's not really a break unless I have also arranged for household duties to occur while I'm away too.  Otherwise, I have to work DOUBLE hard to make up for what didn't happen while I was out playing (wash for clean underwear, clean dishes for clean cups, etc).

Sleep @ 4:30am and up at 6am....

OH JOY....Kanaan's left shoe of his ONLY pair of shoes is at my mother's house.  I go to get it at 6am...try not to fall asleep at the wheel.

Get everyone dressed for our long day, hop in the car and BAM...car won't start.

Thank God the jumper battery is charged up.  Hubby is out of town and that would have been a mess.

Off to coop...Later, I get called out of my class b/c my 3yo has fallen out of the swing and busted his head open...Not that bad but still...

WHAT A DAY!...WHAT A WEEKEND!!!  Does anyone else have days...or series of days like tihs?

A Trip to the Zoo...

Posted in Daily Ramblings

Today me and my little ones went to the Fort Worth Zoo.   I had forgotten how much fun stuff like this can be.  The last time we went to the zoo was a year ago.  We've got to go more often!

It was Homeschool Day, and although much of the educational stuff available was for older children, the zoo was set up for families and learning.  We went to a live animal show and saw a snake, baby alligator, a HUGE frog, and a couple of penguins.

My son has developed a fear of live moving things (other than humans) so it took him a second to realize that the snake was not gonna bite him.  It was a little embarrasing there for a moment cuz I was THE mom with the screaming preschooler and people were looking at me.  I hesitated for a second, thinking that maybe we should move, but I decided against that and instead told him that the snake wasn't going to "get him", encouraged him to look at that snake, and held him close until he relaxed a bit.

We made sure to see the basics, lions, tigers, and bears..."OH MY".  The favorite was watching the elephants splash around in their "pool" to cool down from the Texas sun.  They kept running in and out of the water, rolling around and spraying one another.  I'd never seen animals so active.  Hated that my digital camera was too low on battery to get some shots.

I did get some great shots of the turtles though.  It was so great to see my kiddos SO interested in hanging around an observing them.  I had to move them along after a while!

Looking for more turtles...

OH...there they are!

The fish were a hit with the boys.  Anytime they see fish, they are looking for Nemo and Dori.  We found 'em :)  They were hit for Mom too...we were out of the sun and in the shade while fish-watching.

Brushing the goats at the petting zoo turned out to be the area that the boys had the most trouble leaving.  All I could think about while watching and shooting some pics, was how much the petting zoo reminded me of changing dirty diapers!  We washed our hands REAL good!

I'm so glad to have the opportunity to be with my children on days like today.  It is truly a privelege to be present to observe there "wow" moments.  Everything is new to them and I get sheer joy at watching their responses as they take in novel sights and experiences.

A Day at the Hotel

Posted in Daily Ramblings

Today I hung out in the hotel room my parents have for the conference they are hosting.  Me and my oldest just stayed in the room all day, ordering room service and watching movies.

I really spent most of my time grading papers for the coop I teach in and reading ahead for the history my daugher will be reading soon.

Never a vacation really for a homeschooling Mom.  Always looking for an opportunity to get caught up.

I'll write more tomorrow!

Playing Catchup

Posted in Daily Ramblings

Today was great!...even though I woke up late and had to work hard to catch up.

I'm supposed to wake up at 5am but couldn't.  I've been battling a sore throat and sinus congestion all week (where is my Mommy sick day?).  So when the alarm went off at 5am, I reached over and SLAMMED it so that alarm would know I was serious about it shutting off.

Around 6:45 I awoke and laid there for a moment trying to decide if I wanted to start my day where I should based on my schedule OR get up and still try and make it to the gym (the thing I supposed to do at 5am).  I opted for the gym.  This was a good thing because later on I made a ...um....not so good food choice :(

Off to the gym where I surprised myself and tried my hand at a run on the treadmill.  I've run/walk in a half-marathon before but after that I had my last baby and my running shoes haven't seen any action since.  I walked one and ran one.  Not bad for the first time back to that exercise in a long while.

After my workout, I decided to push my day further out of wack by going to Kroger and doing a coupon-shop.  I have friends that I have been trying to get me to buy in the coupon mania.  It is definitely worth it but it does take time.

So home at 9am, I am definitely late.  No cold cereal or instant oatmeal is in the house and my plan was to bake bran muffins.  I get my oldest to make smoothies to hold everyone over and then I start on the bran muffins.  We ate 10am.... :)

After that our day went pretty smoothly.  I played and danced with the boys for awhile while Kariss did her schoolwork.  Then I sent the boys outside to play so that I could get oriented for the rest of the day and straighten up the kitchen a bit.

Fastforward to lunch, I felt guilty but I broke out some Spaghettios.  High in sodium and fat is OK when you haven't had time to plan properly.

Then the boys are off to their nap and it's time to conference with Kariss.  We sat down to review her History.  We are studying US History this year.  She does her work independantly and then we discuss so I make sure I've hit on important points I want her to focus on.  We were playing a bit of catch up so we talked from 1:30 to 3:30.  You should have seen the glazed over look on her face :)

The baby's therapist showed up at 4am. At 5pm, I ran to my coop host home to pick up my organic coop produce bin.  Back home to get everyone ready to go out for dinner.  Our church is having a conference and we went to hang out with my parents (Pastor & First Lady).  We ate dinner and then hung out at the evening session.  The boys were delirious and their Momma went to bed nursing a sore throat.

Lots got done today but BOY was it a crunch!

Well...so much for order!

Posted in Daily Ramblings

It never fells that the best laid plans...well...they are not so well laid out.  Last night in the middle of my wonderful planning for today, my youngest son fell ill and kept me up half the night.  This made way for a "wonderful" Monday morning where I was running late and trying to make heads or tails of making a morning work that wasn't following my prescribed, well-thought-out direction.

Mondays are our coop day.  My oldest has a day full of classes and I teach at the coop as well to support the classes my daughter takes.  My hubby and I juggled who would do what and when so that I wouldn't miss out on my classes and he wouldn't miss out on a meeting.  It all worked out OK...it always does....but I'm a sucker for routine and so I just felt a little lost all day.

I guess we'll try again for the schedule later...tomorrow I think I'll be cuddling with my 3yo and trying to get things slowly back in working condition.

Wide-eyed and bushy-tailed....

Posted in Daily Ramblings

Well it's past midnight...again!  I have this bad habit of trying to hard to accomplish more and more and more when I have elongated times of peace and quiet.  Fortunately for me, I don't really need that much sleep.  Unfortunately for me, I don't know when to call it quits and therefore I burn the candle down to the bottom of the wick on a regular basis.

Funny thing, I don't mind working this hard.  I have this burning desire and passion for my family that just doesn't die out.

The key is balance though.  I've got to learn to love everyone else and love myself too so that I continue to have a resevoir of peace out of which to share and cultivate the building of the same.

One day, one morning, and one midnight hour at a time...
