God Gave Us an "F" Today!

Posted in Homeschooling

We have been S-L-O-W-L-Y making our way through the alphabet using Letter of the Week online curriculum.  Earlier this week I went to the library and picked up our books for our current letter, "F".  Of course, firefighter, firetruck, and firemen were part of the subjects that fit nicely with this letter so I contemplated the idea of a trip to the local firestation.  I called the fire marshall's office and left a message inquiring as to the procedure for setting something like this up.

That was Monday.

On Wednesday, after  my preschooler  had already had a great day of learning, we were going about our afternoon routine when we heard a very loud noise outside.  My son came running in the house from the backyard yelling, "Mommy, it's a FIRETRUCK!".  We dropped everything, grabbed the camera and ran outside.  Whadya know, God brought the firetruck to us!

We talked to the firemen, touched the hoses, looked in the truck.  We have a fire hydrant in our front yard.  I'm assuming that the firemen were doing a routine check.  So...we even got to watch the fire hydrant explode with water!  It was awesome.  I couldn't have planned a better fieldtrip.  Even the little one got in on the action!  We had to stop him from trying to leave with the firetruck!

God is so good and so thoughtful! He brought us our "F"

Six Weird Things

Posted in Daily Ramblings

I've been tagged for a Meme!  Rachel tagged me for this and I've been trying to figure out for a couple of days what I could say in answer to the challenge.  I'm told that I'm weird but the problem is I don't think so.  Trying to look at myself and find weird things was not easy.  Here goes!

THE RULES: Each player of this game starts with the 6 weird things about you. People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 6 weird things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave a comment that says you are tagged in their comments and tell them to read your blog.

1. I don't like using the same face towel after using it once.  Even if I rinse it out well after using, it still seems to have the "eebie jeebies".

2, I cloth diaper my kiddos.  Now, to some that may not be too weird, but to many I know there is a slow rising "WWWWHHHHAAAAT" arising as they read this.

3. When I need a junk food fix, I'll drive thru Whataburger for fries, Burger King for the burger, Braum's for the shake, and Marble Slab for the ice cream!

4. I will only step food in a dry shower.  If it's wet I just feel like it's not clean.  It's almost like the germs are dried out and dead or something.  I know...MENTAL!

5. I love to smell books.  For those of you who don't know, there are "good" and "bad" smells when it comes to books.  Most older books smell good.  I'll judge whether or not to buy a book by the way it smells.

6.This is one that I'll probably regret sharing later.  I actually like cleaning picking dirty noses.  There is something so fulfilling about getting that little booger dislodged and freeing up nostril space.  My son always says, "Mommy, you're not a doctor!"

I don't have six people to tag, but I'll tag Antique Mommy, Lori, Lorri, and Jana, and anyone else who would like to play along.

Super Simple Chicken Pot Pie

Posted in Recipes

I originally received this recipe from a Super Suppers demo.  I have since made it work for me.

Here are the ingredients:

About two chicken breasts - I have used the leftover meat from a whole chicken cooked in the crockpot, or, if this is a last minute dinner plan, I have stopped by the grocery store to pick up a fully-cooked deli chicken.  If all else fails you can keep canned chicken in your pantry.  One large size can will work great (12.5 oz) or if you want chunky chicken use two!

1 15-oz jar of Alfredo Sauce.  I love Classico Roasted Garlic Alfredo.

1/2 cup frozen peas and carrots.  I just add until it looks "right" and any veggies will do.  This is a great way to use up leftover veggies.

2 T chopped pimentos.  I never have these but I've been told a roasted red pepper would work too (Apparently red peppers can be roasted and then frozen)

Salt & pepper to taste

ADD THYME...I'm guessing ....maybe one tsp.  This really adds a nice flavor.

1 package Pillsbury pie crusts.  You can use a generic brand but I've tried a few and the Pillsbury always tastes better.

  1. Preheat the oven to 375.
  2. Stir together the chicken, pasta sauce, and veggies.  Stir in seasonings.
  3. Line a pie pan with one piece of the pie dough.  Fill with the chicken mixture.  Top with remaining piece of pie dough and crimp the edges.
  4. Use a brush to apply an egg wash to the top of the pie.  An egg wash is one egg mixed with about a tablespoon of water.  You then take a brush and brush the wash (you won't use it all) over the top of your pie.
  5. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes or until crust is golden brown and pie is hot and bubbly

This is definitely a family favorite!  It takes 10-15 minutes of prep time and 30 minutes of baking time.  I've included some pictures of the prep below.  We usually serve it with salad.  I figure since it's not a LOWFAT recipe at least I can wash it down with some ruffage.  Let me also say that as a family we are trying to eat less of stuff like this (hydrogenated fat in the crusts, and extra fat in the pasta sauce), but I'm not perfect and every now and then I need a "SAVE ME"  dinner.  Hope someone enjoys this!

Today was one of those days...

Posted in Daily Ramblings

when nothing goes right.  The baby had a blowout.  We were at a therapy visit and I had just cleaned out the baby bag and hadn't replenished it with a change of clothes. UUUGGGGGGGGHHHH....

Oh well...I had to clean him up, put back on his shirt, and then...

I had to wrap his diaper-only bottom in his coat.  I was so embarrassed to leave the hospital with his bare feet dangling out below the bottom edge of the coat.  Then...we came home.  He had fallen asleep.  He is one of those that can thrive WAY past naptime if he gets a 15 minute power nap.

This is a look of him after we pulled into the garage.

Then I came home and tried to work on a project that needed me to print.  You guessed it...my printer wouldn't work.

These days just happen.  I'm trying to remember that these days happen.  I'm trying to remember that tomorrow has the hope of being a bit better :))

Saturday....NOT weighing in...

Posted in Weight Loss Journal

OK...so I didn't weigh in today.  I'm staying with  a friend this weekend.  My husband gave me the weekend off...(Can you say...JESUS IS REAL !!!).

This week, I have started working towards my goal of losing weight.  I'm struggling to wake up.  I've gotten a little too used to sleeping past my wake up time of 5am so getting up as been a chore.  My girlfriend goes to hike a local wildlife preserve on Saturday morning and I did make it out with her.  I literally had to DRAG myself out of bed.  Progress is all that counts right?

Can I admit, though, that as part of my weekend off I treated myself to a Wendy's burger last night.  BAD DECISION!  When you are not regularly eating that kind of food, your body FEELS IT when you do.  It is mid-morning and I can still feel that meat in my stomach.  It never seems as good inside as it smelled outside and it tasted on the way down.  I think there is a principal about sin in there somewhere...Hmmmm...

Since I don't have an update on my workout from this week, I wanted to at least provide some interesting info.  Lori over at Keeping the Home, posted some great FREE resources on her blog last week to help with the whole weight-loss-goal-thing.  Although there are lots of great resources out there to aid a person in losing weight and keeping track of weight loss, calories, and foods to eat, FREE is always good.  I have tried a few so far and I'm still trying to decide on my favorite.

I'm off to enjoy some me time and I look forward to posting some results next weekend!

You're Not A Doctor!

Posted in On Being a Mom and a Wife

As I laid my two little ones down to sleep, I knelt down next to the toddler bed and leaned in for a snuggly hug.  "Are you going to lay with me", my 3yo asked me with bright eyes.  "No, Sweet Boy", I replied.  I explained that Mommy had to go get some rest too.

Because, I was so close to him, I could see right up his nose and noticed that it needed cleaning.  I grabbed a tissue and proceeded to clean it for him. He promptly proceeded to tell me, "You're not a doctor, Mommy"...

I stifled my urge to laugh in his face because he was so serious.  I said, "No, I'm not a doctor, but I'm a Mommy and I need to clean your nose.".  I made my way downstairs thinking how wonderful it is to be a mother at home with my children and to be able to catch great moments like that.

I arrived downstairs to find the mess from this morning awaiting me..I sighed...I'm the cleaning lady...

I made my way from the living room to the kitchen...No, I'm the cook...

The refrigerator caught my eye and I noticed the menu for this week...Really...I'm the nutritionist...

Our island got my attention because the screwdriver was there were I left it earlier...I'm a handiwoman...

I remembered I needed to go get the hammer to hang a few pictures...cuz I'm the interior decorator...

I picked up the massage oil I use to give my smallest son his daily stretches for his injury...No, I'm a therapist...

The shelf sits near to the area where we did school work today...Looks like I'm a teacher...

The school work rested close to the playpen and the other baby paraphernalia...Oh, I'm a child care provider...

I glanced at the stack of bills of on my desk...Wait, I'm the financial manager...

The thought crossed my mind that we ought to get our W-2 soon...Even better...I'm the tax lady...

On my way to the laundry room to dump the dirty clothes I realized...Hmmph...I'm a personal shopper...

The laundry room gave way to the bedroom...Aah Hah!...I'm the keeper of the love nest!

Out of the bedroom back into the hallway...

The hallway closet was open and my mouth dropped as I stared at the shelf of medicines, band-aids, and supplies....Wow...I AM the doctor!

Can anybody else relate!!!???

Works-for-Me-Wednesdays: Preschool Fun

Posted in Homeschooling

Playing with rice is a big hit at our house.  I filled a plastic container with rice.  I store it in our special activities cabinet.

I set the rice on a plastic cover.  I believed it was originally supposed to go under a high chair for easy clean up.  Anywho, we found another use for it!

I give the boys some various sized cups, containers, and measuring cups and let them go at it.  The only rule is no throwing.  Realistically this activity lasts about 15-30 minutes before they get a little TOO creative and start creating a major mess.  Actually my 3yo could last for about 45 min but my younger son would be just be too messy creative with that much time on his hands.

When they are done, I simply pick up the plastic mat, fold it a tad to form a narrow opening at the bottom and re-pour the rice into the container.  If any has gotten onto the carpet, it's a breeze to run the vacuum and clean it up.

Be sure to check out Rocks in My Dryer for more Works-for-Me Wednesday tips.

Baby on Back

Posted in Homemaking

I have to admit that the toddler years are the hardest for me.  Not because I don't love them because I absolutely do, but because sometimes those bundles of joy just get in the way.  They touch EVERYTHING with their sweet little hands, and they explore EVERYWHERE on those pudgy little feet, and they bother love on EVERYONE all the time.

Right now I have an "almost" two year old.  He's old enough to do things but not to do them for very long.  This results in time where my older children are happily occupied and the toddler is getting in the way.
My recourse has been to investigate my options for entertaining my little ones.  I've had mother talk to me about gates, play-yards, and play pens.

I utilize, without guilt, a play pen for short periods of time.  It teaches him, like my other children have been taught, to keep himself occupied and happy without being entertained by another individual.  It also gives him the time and space, to explore, with focus, a variety of quality toys I make available to him - one at a time.  I also utilize, on occasion, a gate that will block of the entrance (or exit) to our staircase.

With that said, I for the most part let my children roam free in our home.  I take time to teach them what they can and cannot touch and where they can and cannot go.  For the most part, they learn compliance. (Read that last sentence as  - " they ARE children and do test boundaries but they can learn to respect boundaries too")

I'm still left with a quandry though.  A toddler...is a toddler...is a toddler... what to do?  Well,  somewhere in my Mommy journey I discovered a life saver.  The "Wrap".  There are different variations of it.  I started with a Baby Bjorn and grew frustrated as the growing weight of my baby on my front proved too much for my back.  I was then referred to a Maya Wrap that would let my baby sit on my hip but this still proved a bit uncomfortable with increased weight.  The Maya is 10x better than the Bjorn for an infant, but still not the answer for a toddler.

Glory Hallelujah!  Some web research resulted in a old but new solution.  The Wrap. I know can carry on my  front, hip, or back, a newborn, infant, or a toddler (or a preschooler) with ease.  The learning curve is real but short.  Great tips abound on the web at MamaToto.  This solution has been around for centuries in various cultures.  I'm glad that I got wind of it here in our oh-so-technically-advanced- US of A.

Here is me with my not-so-little one (ignore the chunky arms...I'm working on that at the gym) .  He rode "piggy-back" today while I worked in the kitchen for over an hour.

I guess he got a little worn out.  Swaying hips are MAGIC !!!

Assessing the Damage

Posted in Weight Loss Journal

OK...so today I swallowed my pride, packed up the kids, and drove to the Gym. My old friend was waiting for me with doors wide open but I felt so afraid to walk through them. My relationship with old Gym has been at a standstill for about six weeks.

I have disgraced Gym by flirting with old flames. Fries, Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Soda have weasled their way back in. I have to say I've been conscious, guilty, and very aware of my indiscretions. So, today I went to pay the piper.

I pulled up in front of the the doors and took a deep breath. I intended to apologize, to say I was deeply sorry for my brief rendezvous, and make peace. I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know how bad the damage would be and how hard I would have to work to get back into good graces. There is good news. My friend was very forgiving!

I stepped on the scale to bare the weight of my soul and found that there was no love lost. I had not gained a pound. My joy is indescribable. My friend has accepted me back and we are off and running again, working towards the goal of being one in purpose of mind.

I guess the love we share is genuine. Even though I made some bad decisions and didn't move forward, it must be real love because I couldn't bear to completely forsake the life that I'd chosen before I was strongly tempted.

Onwards and upwards. I'd like to close out the last 7 pounds (see ticker at the top of the page) and then set my new goal!

Thank you Gym for loving me and welcoming me back.

Frugal Fridays - Free 411!

Posted in Daily Ramblings

It's Frugal Friday over at Crystal's Blog and I think I've stumbled upon a tip that's worthy of sharing.  Last month over the holidays I travelled quite a bit.  I needed to use my cell phone to get numbers to places I didn't have contact info for.  I just got my cell phone bill.  At $1.80 per call, let's just say they rang up royally.  Can you say $35 in Directory Assistance?  Ugh....

Anyway, yesterday I logged onto Yahoo and found an article detailing where you can go to get 411 assistance for free!  What's the catch you ask?  Well, on some calls for assistance you may have to listen to a 10 second advertisement.  I think that is WAY better than $1.80!  Tried it today and it worked great!  Click on the link for more info.

Be sure and visit Biblical Womanhood for more Frugal Friday tips!  Read Crystal's tip and then make sure you see all the other tips listed at the bottom!

Amazed...again. by my 3 year old.

Posted in Homeschooling

I had a friend to stop by this morning. She's having a baby next week and I wanted to share some of my baby things with her. I had just set my son in front of the computer intending to sit there and play with him.   As part of our "school" we have found some great educational sites online.  Free is always good.

90 minutes later, he is still there and has navigated his way to the Cars website. My 3yo has figured out how to use the mouse correctly with his sweet little hands. He has figured out how to "paint" the cars, switch pages, and minimize the screen. We try to spend time on the computer every now and then looking at his favorite characters from PBS kids but I didn't know he knew enough to navigate his way around.

This is one of the reasons I love being home with my children. I don't miss stuff like this. I needed this little moment of joy too. This morning started with me thinking I needed a break and trying to figure out where I could send him!

Works-for-Me-Wednesdays: Making Lettuce Last

Posted in Homemaking

We are a part of an organic food coop.  This allows us to get fresh fruit and veggies every other week.  Usually we receive a couple of heads of lettuce in our bin.

I've learned that keeping lettuce dry is the trick to making it last.  When I first started preparing my lettuce, I would wash it and then use a salad spinner to dry it.  This did the trick but was a little labor intensive as all of the lettuce would not fit in the spinner.  By accident, I figured out another way.

I washed my lettuce after cutting/tearing it by soaking it in a large bowl of cold water.  I then placed the lettuce on a kitchen towel on my countertop.  I got distracted and hours later came back to a bunch of DRY lettuce...no effort on my part.  This has become my way of drying lettuce for salad.

Put in a plastic container or Ziploc bag with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture, lettuce will last a LONG time.   The only thing to do is to  check the paper towel every now and then to make sure it's dry.  If not, replace it!  I've had lettuce last up to 3-4 weeks!

Be sure to check out Rocks in My Dryer for more Works-for-Me Wednesday tips.

Homeschooling Households...People just don't get it...

Posted in Homeschooling

I wish my house was pristine.  I wish my house was always organized.  I wish I made three square meals a day.  I wish that my nails were always done and that my makeup was always fresh.   I wish that my carpets didn't have spill stains and that my ceramic tile didn't have cracks in it.  I wish that my TV didn't have fingerprints and I wish that my videotapes were actually in their cases.  I wish that my favorite shoes weren't tennis shoes ( or just socks) and I wish that I had more occasions to wear drycleanable clothes.  I wish that my  day could stop when I had a visitor pop by and I wish that I could talk for a very long time on the phone to each person who called.

I have all of these wishes b/c I'm a homeschooling Mom.  There are many things on this list I thought would drive me insane.  I've learned to live with the incomplete and the imperfect because we LIVE in our house and people are perfect or complete.

Sometimes I wish I could explain to others  the ins and outs of a homeschooling household but  tonight I read a wonderful post by Kendra on her blog PreschoolersandPeace.  Thanks Kendra for expressing yourself and ME so eloquently.

We've been educating our children at home for ten years now.  In those ten years, I have observed that there are expectations that non-homeschoolers can place on homeschooling moms simply because they lack the practical knowledge of what it means to homeschool.

If you are the mother, grandmother, sister, friend, father, or brother of a homeschooling mom, here are some things you should know:

1. Educating children at home is a full-time job. Don't get irritated if she consistently allows the answering machine to do its job.  If she were a teacher in an institutional classroom, you probably wouldn't think of calling her during school hours, so try to realize that while still at home, she is keeping regular school hours, too.

2. Unlike homes in which the children are gone for eight straight hours, her home is in a constant state of activity.  The children are not only home, they are home making messes.  All day long.  Their mother doesn't even have the opportunity to go into their rooms while they are at school and weed out the junk.  And if she is like me, you might find odd homeschooly things lying around- like the month we had a dead turtle in the garage fridge.

3. Housekeeping and homeschooling are mutually exclusive.  If she is doing her job educating her children academically, then her house is not being cleaned.  If she takes the day to clean the house, then school wil not be accomplished.

4. Place realistic expectations on her- she cannot simultaneously teach school, make three square meals, keep a house that looks like it has sprung out of the pages of Architectural Digest, have her nails done, drive children to extracurricular activities, and have all the clothing laundered and pressed.  Something's gotta give, and in my experience, it is usually her personal care.  So don't expect her to don the latest styles, have her roots meticulously dyed at just the right moment, and her aforementioned nails filed and polished to perfection.  And while most of us aren't slovenly, we just tend to put some superfluous aspects of personal care at the bottom of the to-do list.

5. For many of us, homeschooling isn't an option.  Many believe it is not only the best way for their family, it is the only way.  Many see homeschooling as a Scriptural directive.  When sharing a particular struggle unique to homeschooling, comments like, "Well, why don't you consider putting them in school?  Maybe homeschooling just isn't your thing" aren't helpful.  Instead, offer a listening ear and your fervent prayers on her behalf.

6.  If you are truly concerned about the state of her emotions, home, children, or marriage, offer practical help to ease her burden.  Personal time is at a premium for her, so consider offering to take her kids for the day so she can recuperate.  If you like to do laundry, offer to come over and get the loads going, fold, and/or iron.  If you like to cook, consider putting together some meals that she can store in the freezer for days when time is at a premium.  If she teaches a broad spectrum of ages and grades, consider offering to come in once a week or more to teach preschool to the little ones.  One grandma I know created "Nana U" for her preschool grandson (number five of seven) and not only did it ease her homeshooling daughter's burden, it created a special bond between grandma and the child.

But there’s a caveat here: ASK her what would be most helpful to her.  Don’t presume to know what would help her.  Taking the oldest children for the day might be fun for you, but it’s quite possibly not at all helpful to her.  The living room might need to be vacuumed, but it’s not helpful if she’s trying to take a nap.  Someone once told me, “If it’s not wanted, it’s not helpful.”

7. Think about what a financial burden homeschooling may be placing on the family.  The loss of her possible income can be a real struggle nowadays, and you might be able to buoy her for another year by offering to purchase little things like simple school supplies.  Gifts for the children like books on subjects of interest to the child, field trip fees, museum memberships, and the money to pay for music lessons or other extracurricular activities are the best thing you could give a homeschooling family.  Not only does a homeschooling mom not need one more thing to manage or pick up, she would be thrilled to see you take an interest in the many academic items on her wish list.

8. Simple questions like, "How can I pray for you?" and "Is there any way I can help you?" are like a cool breeze in her life.  Don't assume you know her needs- ask.  You could just be the vessel God uses to carry her on through this very demanding and ultimately rewarding season of her life.

For all ten of you who read my blogs.... :)

Posted in Daily Ramblings

You may have been wondering what I'm doing since I haven't posted in awhile.  Well... I've been trying to be a good steward of my time - computer time that is - and I've had something else to do with that computer time....

Play with my new computer!

I went and bought myself a new computer...a MacBook to be exact.  I've been moving files, learning my way around the Mac system (I'm a long time PC user), and just getting acquainted.  I need to name her.  (Yes, I've decided it has to be a her cuz I'm in love and I couldn't be in love with another man now could I :)

I'm open to suggestions for a name.  I'd love to here your ideas.  She's sleek and thin (my idol).  She's also  BLACK!  I've already had a car named "Black Beauty" so don't suggest that.  Anyway, here's a picture of her!

So, hopefully, now that I know may way around a little better, I will feel more comfortable spending time blogging.  I almost feel guilty about not keeping up.  I know that the 10 of you who read have missed me!

Closing up Christmas

Posted in Daily Ramblings

Today I got busy putting away my Christmas stuff.  I was determined not to go past a week after the new year with Christmas decor still staring me in the face.  I will never forget the year my tree was up until MARCH!....

I didn't have much to remove this year.  Because of our being in and out of town the month of December, our Christmas decor went only half unpacked so the cleanup was a breeze.  I packed away the ornaments, garlands, and other doo-dads in plastic grocery bags and put them away in storage containers.  I took down the Christmas artwork from last year....yes...my three year old's holiday art work was up a whole YEAR.  I was too lazy couldn't bear to take it down :)

Last but not least I took down the tree.  The box it came in has become a little beat up so I asked hubby to purchase a tree bag from the Container Store.  It definitely holds our tree but it is HUGE.

The box was hard to deal with but it kind of "smushed" the tree down to a manageable size.  This new contraption might be a bit harder.  Oh well, my boys enjoyed the new bag!  They even got a ride out of the deal when I drug this monstrousity out to the garage!

I'm looking forward to getting back to normal.  I'm looking forward to starting the new year!  I'm also looking forward to blogging about it!  I've been a little hit or miss through the holidays and I'm glad to return to daily (or at least semi-daily) blogging!

My Hope for the New Year!

Posted in Spiritual Stuff

I'm a list person.  I love lists.  They make me feel secure by reminding me that my thoughts are concrete, unforgettable, and in black.  It seems that with four children at home, my mind is constantly producing thoughts and simultaneously dumping them as my brain cannot hold an unlimited amount of information.

Because my brain is always working overtime and because time itself is limited, I have found myself starting many things and not finishing them.  The most current demand gets the most attention and anything else that can wait, does.

My hope for this year is to finish a few things that I feel are important and worth the priority.

God has been good enough to regularly reveal to me what is important to Him for my life.  I have spent a lot of time reading his Word and studying what he says about my roll as a wife and a mother as well as my roll as a daughter of the King.  I have been convicted multiple times regarding changes He would have me to make and how he would have me to make them.

The good news is that I have made many changes.  I have heard God's voice and have valiantly tried to make the attempt to follow through on His words to me IN MY OWN STRENGTH.  The result is always the same - FALLING SHORT.

I fall short in being a joyful, patient mother.  I fall short in being a supportive and loving wife.  I fall short in bringing glory to God through the treatment of my temple.  I just fall short.

A quiet moment of reflection at my church's New Year's Eve service allowed me time and space to reflect on the past year.  God convicted me.  I received a smack in the face.  He showed me that it is not possible to pull off His direction for my life in my own strength.  Last year was a year of attempting to pull things off in my own strength.   In 2006, I accomplished a lot but not while relying on the Lord.  This result was one tired woman. The result was many things started and only a few things finished.

My hope for 2007 is to depend on, lean on, and rest in my Savior.  His strength will make it possible to finish the things that He allowed me to start last year, and a couple of years before that :)  His strength will make it possible for me to be more consistent in actually DOING the things that I know I should.  That's the thing - my strength ebbs and flows which results in my best days, weeks, and months looking a little "splotchy".  What I need more than anything is someone bigger than myself to encourage my innermost being to continue on when there is nothing left.

My God has an everlasting, unending supply of power and my hope for 2007 is simply to tap in.  My hope for 2007 is to finish things that are important to him.

Thank you Laurel Wreath for the invitation to reflect on the New Year and what we'd like to see God do in our lives.

Detoxing from the Holidays...

Posted in Daily Ramblings

The holidays are drawing to a close and I welcome and dread the coming days of the return to routine.  Routine is my friend.  It allows me to accomplish all the things required of me as a wife and a mother.  It allows me to make time for the things most important to me without forsaking other things not as enjoyable but necessary.

The last couple of weeks have been full of spontaneous activity.  I've tried hard to lay down my love of schedule and spend impromptu moments in the bed watching TV with my oldest, or rolling on the floor w/toys and boys.  I've tried to get some rest, all the while staying up late to finish things that were on my heart for this season.

I have a love hate relationship with "breaks".  I need them.  I want them. However, they make me lazy.  I get used to things being a little slow, a little helter skelter, and a little fun-loving.  Taking it easy during the holidays makes our laundry a little behind, or meals a little more thrown together, and our activities a little more FUN.  There is time for board games (should have played more).  There is time for watching the complete season 1 of Little House on the Prairie.  There is time for making ornaments (that still need to be painted).  There is time for trying new recipes and ordering takeout b/c those new recipes weren't so good.

I am thinking about my new year and what the Lord would have me to change.  I sense that He would like for me to return to my routine with an eye on opportunities for spontaneity.  Basically, looking for Him during the day and opportunities that He would have me to take.

Routine and discipline are important.  The Bible speaks frequently about discipline and the need for hard work to make life prosperous but the BIble also speaks about being sensitive to the Spirit and making sure that we do what is important to Him.

My thoughts this last week of the year are on getting back in the groove, inviting my routine back into my life, ceasing laziness and disorder.  My thoughts are also on being open to the Spirit and settling His groove, His routine, and what is important to Him.  God give me BALANCE!
