Let the Sunshine In!

What's that song from when we were young?  "So let the sunshine in, face it with a grin, open up your heart and let the sun shine in!"  That's how I have felt the past couple of days.  I can actually see evidence of the earth's closest star!  I'm so dependent on at least a little sunshine.

School has been going quite well for the first 3 days into the new year.  We have Bible, history and science in the morning before lunch.  It consists of me reading at least 3 chapters in the Bible to the kids--Hannah is supposed to read through particular parts of the Bible for her Wednesday night class--Champions.  I pick some reading from off of her chart and we read aloud.  I not only give her credit on her chart but also on my yearly Bible reading chart.

*Side note* I tried so hard to read the Bible through last year.  I missed the mark by 109 chapters!  I think Paul said there is like 1190 chapters--I'll have to ask him again--in the Bible, so I had knocked out a whole bunch of the Bible last year.  It is my goal this year to actually make it through the Bible.  I haven't read the entire Bible through in one year since the year my second daughter was born--1999.  Sad but true.  I have been reading my Bible--just not able to get through the whole thing in 365 days.  Maybe the fact that this year has 366 I might be able to make it??

Okay, after Bible I read for about 15-20 minutes out of an old Ohio History book (1966).  A friend from church has loaned me the book so I thought it would be nice for us to read through it.  I can use the history review.  I get so discouraged at how poor my memory is.  I just am not able to retain information.  Never really was good at long term memory.  I just hope that I soak in some info as I try to pour it into the minds of my children.  After Ohio History we read for 15-20 minutes out of a Health Book from Abeka.  Not sure what grade it is.  Just wanting to cover some science material with it.

Then back to History...why is it that I was a science major in school and now I enjoy history more?...I have been trying to cover the Civil War this year.  I read about 2 chapters of the Child's War to the kids.  They really enjoy hearing about kids not much older than them who lived over 200 years ago.  The stories though are tragic and very eye-opening to the atrocities of war.

After that I read through a section of Christian Kids Explore Biology.  I had high hopes to be more involved with this book earlier this year.  I get too overwhelmed by having to do extra things with this book so I basically read the section to them and have them narrate what they learned.  Good enough for now.  I can always return to it later to do experiments or color pictures.  I could have them color while I read, usually the girls are knitting, so maybe I'll do that sometime.

Next is Mystery of History.  I'm trying to get out of the first volume.  I'm anxious to get to the next one.  I have adjusted the readings of that too.  I read three sections a day rather than making it stretch over a week.  Hannah takes the pretest.  (I plan to make Rebekah take the pretest too next year.)  I read one section and the girls have to give a narration.  We do that for each of the 3 sections.  We then make the little people to put on the timeline.  If time permits before lunch we put those people onto the timeline and have Hannah take the posttest.  I put the narration and tests into a 3 ring binder just for Mystery of History.  Not quite what the author of the book suggests but works for us.  Again, I end up ignoring a lot of cool little extra things the author suggests to do for further study but I would much rather have a good overview of material rather than bog down and make us masters of ziggurats and the like.  Nothing wrong with being masters at that, I just don't have time and patience to do it!

Then we have lunch, clean up from lunch, put the baby down for a nap and hit the books.  I help Rebekah through her math (what a trial), help Hannah and Rebekah do their spelling, have them finish their workbook pages.  Later in the afternoon I work with Denny on his phonics and math.  Before I know it it is time to make supper, check in on my mom and move on with the rest of my evening.

Well, I should go.  I need to finish grading Hannah's spelling and then get after Rebekah and Denny who are bickering right now over who knows what!

Just wanted you to know that I'm enjoying the sun today!

Introduction....

My best friend talked me into doing this...blogging.  Not sure how this will go but I think I could maybe use it to keep up with friends and family.  I don't always get a chance to write or email as often as I would like.

Here is my official intro--Hi, I'm a homeschooling mom of 4 great kids--Hannah age 10, Rebekah age 8, Denny age 6, and Grace 2.  I'm married to my college sweetheart.  We celebrated 13 years of marriage last October.  (I've known him 17 years.)  I help take care of my aging parents--I'm their way to all of their doctor visits and some of their other errands.  Mom is 73, Dad will be 80 next month.  I'm very blessed to be close to them and be able to help them when they need me most.  Paul and I teach 5th and 6th grade boys Sunday School class at our church.  I also sing in the choir, sing specials, and work in the nursery.

Prior to being a mom at home I worked as a Medical Technologist at CompuNet Clinical Labs in the Chemistry department.  Prior to that I was a phlebotomist at Middletown Regional Hospital, a lab assistant at Summa Health Care System  (Akron, OH), a phlebotomist at Robinson Memorial Hospital (Ravenna, OH), and Aultman Hospital (Canton, OH).  I have a bachelor's of science degree from Mount Union College, Alliance, OH and a Medical Technology degree from the Cooperative Medical Technology School of Akron.  I graduated from Timken Senior High School in Canton, OH.

There you have little bit about me!
