What is your measure?

Posted in just my thoughts

By that I mean, what standard do you use to determine what is "okay", and what is not? I have been pondering this for a while now, as I found myself watching something on TV, or even talking to someone about a tv show, and I would say to them, or myself, "It's not that bad".....(justifying that it was alright for me to watch it) My question is, "compared to what?" Just because something is not worse than another, does that mean it is okay to watch, listen too, or talk about??

There was an article in our local paper where a teacher had entered a contest in connecting with long lost friends. Turns out she and her long lost friend won, and got to go to CBS in NY, and got makeovers, and got new outfits, and got to be on TV. Then they were sent for breakfast by the producers, and then had the rest of the day free. So, they went to Times Square. Guess what they saw??? "The Naked Cowgirl." (I never heard of her before) It was a 70 year old woman, ( I refuse to call her a "lady" as the teacher called her) in a cowboy hat, boots, bra, and THONG, singing and playing the guitar. And the teacher described it as hilarious! (AND, yes, she took pictures....eeeww! but did not send them in-thankfully) I am sorry, but when does something VULGAR become hilarious??!! This woman is supposedly a Christian, and goes to CHURCH! Evidently, CBS even came to our home town, and shot some clips of their church camp!!! (which got cut due to a shooting in Kentucky that needed more coverage) I have to ask myself, WHAT was her measure? I don't think it would be funny...what if it were her GRANDMOTHER, I wonder if she would find it so hilarious?

I know I really need to work on this area.....and there is so little worthy of watching anymore, I need to find other, more productive ways to fill my time. How about you?

Stepping off the soap box, now.

Blessings~Lynn

Lynn I so completely agree!! I am 26 yrs old and most people are out livin' it up still party animals and wild but I have not ever been like that. I sometimes feel like I missed out and have always been the nice girl...but then I stop and think that none of that sort of life would be beneficial or good for anyone. My hubby doesn't seem to mind what he sees on TV but I often stop and say to myself " I would not invite that half dressed "lady" into my home so why should she be on my TV?" or "That is too violent for my children to see so why should I sit and see it?" I think that you are definitely onto something...like how can we be "transformed by the renewing of our minds...if we are sitting in front of the TV being filled up with garbage? I really appreciate your post there is definitely something to be said for modesty and decency...but you wont catch TV or the world saying it.
