I am one of those odd people who love to drink milk, so are my kids. We go through an average of 6 gallons a week. No, that was not a typo. I did say 6 gallons a week. My kids will only drink milk or water. No juice or kool-aid. Which just thrills our dentist and doctor to no ends. Milk has gone up to over $4 a gallon. Our monthly bill would run about $96 a month. My father swears it would be cheaper to buy a cow. I think he could be right. Anyway, I had to come up with a way to save money. You all are no doubt thinking about the instant dry milk. The problem? It tastes....well.....yucky. We tried getting use to it, but it was a no go with me. My mother actually shared this with me. First, take two old milk jugs and rinse them out with water. I will take one gallon of WHOLE milk (which is sometimes a little cheaper at my local grocery store) and divide it in half. Then I will make up 3 quarts of the dry milk in the other jug and then divide it equally between the jugs of whole milk. This will give you about two gallons of 2% milk. You can not tell the difference in cereal, cooking, or ovaltine. I do keep a gallon of store bought 2% in the fridge for gulping once in a while. The taste is a little different when you are drinking it straight, but not by much. I can get a 4lb box that makes 20 quarts at wal-mart for $13. It has cut our bill in half and we still have a good taste to it. A word of caution: Be sure to watch the expiration dates. I do not know if this affects the spoilage at all because a gallon of milk only last two days in our household. Regardless, I write the date I make the milk on the jug in marker. |
