Decorating accordion style doors

Posted in money time saving ideas and lessons

The house I am living in is the first I have ever lived in that did not have those accordion type doors.  They have their advantages.  They can open in a small space, but short of painting them, there is not much you can do to decorate.  I have two, quick, easy, non-sew and cheap ideas for you today.  This is also great if you rent because it will not cause damage to the doors and both ideas can be removed in a matter of minutes.  If my directions are not clear, which is understandable considering I have no pics to offer you, email me and I will try to provide more detail or a drawing.

In my first house, I wove a large coordinating ribbon through the slants on the top half of the door.  I then wove a small ribbon, of a different color on either side of it on opposing slants.  (I hope that makes sense).  I had a friend who took this idea and wove pastel ribbons on the door of the nursery.

This next idea is really beautiful.  This creates a panel looking door and can be changed to match your décor sooooo easily.  Ok, let’s see if I can describe this clearly.  We will take one accordion door.  This will have four sections of the slants.  I will describe what to do to one section of the slants.  Measure the width and length of the slants, NOT the door.  Cut the fabric (I use bedsheets)  twice the length and about two inches wider.  Fold the two inches on the width into the “bad” side.  I would iron them at this point, it will make them easier to deal with.  If you are in a sewing mood, you could hem them if you wish, but it really is not necessary.  Feed the sheet through the top slat of one section and then through the bottom slant.  Attach the two ends on the backside of the door with double sided Velcro or stitch into place or if you are just in a mood, hot glue like I did. Do this to the other 3 sections.  This will create the look of four panels on your door.  Or, if your door is damaged, like a buddy of mine was, we created a two panel door by feeding the fabric through the top slant of the door and using the bottom slant closest to the floor.  You can either make the fabric taught for a clean, straight paneled look, or cut the fabric wider and gather it for a country look.

I hope this is of help to all of you ladies out there who have suffered through those doors as I have.
