Well, it has been 1 year, 223 entries and 195 comments since I started this blog. It never ceases to amaze me how many people actually care to read what I write or that people take time out of their busy schedule to leave comments for me. Thank you one and all. I have been asked why I do this. Well, it is quite simple. When I started our homeschooling adventure (because that is what it is) I found I had no idea what I was doing. We had just moved to SC to be near relatives and I did not know anyone in the area who homeschooled. I really had no idea how to live on one budget and still be able to find what we needed for school. I also had very little encouragement. Most of what I encountered was negative, and that is putting it nicely. What could be categorized as positive was really two relatives that had a wait and see attitude. You know the “well if you want to TRY this go ahead and if it doesn’t work out you can just put them back in public school.” I actually had a relative curse me out saying I was going to ruin my child. I will spare you the details; I am sure many of you could provide your own stories at this point. I wanted to offer other homeschooling mothers the encouragement I really needed when I started. As any homeschooling veteran will tell you, the first year is the hardest. It is the year that you do a lot wrong. The first year is spent finding out what doesn’t work rather than what does. It can be so very easy to get discouraged, especially when you are not grounded in a good support group and all you really have around you is the negative. I knew I could do this and I knew God wanted me to do it. I just really didn’t know how. I am thankful for the Dr. Laura radio program. She talked one day about homeschooling and the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). Their website not only gave me the contact information for dozens of support and accountability groups in my area, it gave me the encouragement and the confidence I desperately needed to homeschool. I wanted to do the same for others. For some of us, the internet may be the only source of contact with other homeschoolers that many may have. Well, this is the story of why I started blogging. I hope I have provided someone out there with some help; whether it be in the area of saving money, lessons ideas, encouragement or just providing a much needed laugh . Either way, thank you for taking the time to reading my posts. God Bless. |
