Quick tip for Keeping track of your internet passwords

Posted in money time saving ideas and lessons

Is it me or do you have like 20 different passwords for 30 different websites?  And they tell us for safety we should not use the same password for each account.  And each site has different requirements like it has to be eight characters long or a mix of letters and numbers or whatever.  Keeping up with these can be difficult and that is putting it lightly.  If you are like me, you have them scribbled down on about 20 different scraps of paper, spread all over the house; some used as coaster for cups, some incorporated into art projects, some with half a grocery list written down on it. It would take longer to find the password for the electric company webiste than to just mail a stupid check.  Anyway, out of necessity to keep my sanity I had to come up with a better way of doing this.

I created a table in Microsoft Word.  It has 3 columns in it. One for the website name, one for sign in name and then one for the password.  I also have it divided into categories.  One for bills & banking, one for shopping, one for homeschooling websites, one for forums, one for educational stuff like our library card numbers, one for whatever.

I created a shortcut on the desk top for it so I can reduce the window and bring it up when I am on the internet. I can look up a password or add one quickly.   I use to print this out but it got to the point where people were coming over so much and I had to take it down so I just didn’t bother anymore.

A word of warning from personal experience, BACK THIS INFO UP ON A FLASHDRIVE OR DISK.  Or at the very least keep it printed up in a safe place.
