Quick tip for coolers (or keeping water cold in your purse)

Posted in money time saving ideas and lessons

Generally, we homeschoolers carry our own drinks.  I prefer water to soda (or as I call it, carbonated sugar) or even fruit juice (which is just the sugary water of the fruit without all of those pesky nutrients). The problem of course is keeping it cold. Now you can buy those cold packs for a $1 at Wal-mart or make your own with ice and a ziploc bag which rest assured will leak all over the contents of your bag.  I have a great tip that you can use in your larger cooler as well.

We usually take bottles of water with us.  The night before, I will fill them up half way and put them in the freezer without the cap on.  The next day, I fill it up and water and off we go.  This not only provides the water we drink but it will act as a cold pack without taking up much needed space and  will not add any more weight to your bag.  As the ice melts, the water will stay very cold.  I usually put them in an insulated lunch bag that came with my diaper bag for baby bottles and there will still be ice in them over 5 hours later.

Now if you will excuse me, we are on our way to the zoo and I need to get the bottles out of the freezer and full of water.

I love doing this in the summer time for our family. Thanks for the reminder!

To keep ours from sweating, we slip a sock over it. We find fun and dunky socks just for this. My daughter says hers stays colder longer too. Leena
