TV converter boxes need for Feb. 2009 $40 coupon

Posted in money time saving ideas and lessons

Yes, it is true. The world as we know it shall end on February 17, 2009.  All over-the-air broadcasts will become digital.  So all of you with those rabbit ears with the ends wrapped in foil (like me and think spring cleaning includes putting on a fresh crumple of the foil)  will no longer be able to get local stations.  Ummmm is that suppose to be a bad thing?  Ok, Ok, I am done.  If you do not have the money or see the need in cable (like me) but still want the local stations for news or PBS, I have some info for you.

The new converter boxes are out and range in price from $40 and up. However, our benevolent government has a phone number you can call to get a $40 coupon.  Now I will not spend $40 for the box but I might be willing to spend under $10.  Right now they are $49 at Wal-mart but I bet there is a cheaper place to find them.

Three quick heads up:

1)       there are only a limited number of coupons so you need to request one now

2)       they will only allow two per household (I only have 1 TV anyway)

3)       they expire 90 days from mailing

The phone number is 888-388-2009 or you can go to https://www.dtv2009.gov/

Saturday, May 3, 2008 - Gov't as benefactor

How generous of the gov't to take steps to ensure the citizenry can preserve their television viewing capabilities.

I know-I know- I am having my coffee this morning with a dollop of cranky and a sprinkle of cynicism.
